Good workout program to build a lot of strength and mass?

Any advice on the most effective way for a wheelchair user to build up arm strength?

I've been a wheelchair user for the past 13 years and after years of not being as physically active as I use to be due to some medical issues and a long time being as gentle as possible on my broken wheelchair before getting a new one I've come to realize just how deconditioned I've become! I went from pushing myself around cities with super steep hills to barely being able to get up small inclines.

I'm hoping some of you can help give advice/tips on the most effective way to strengthen my arms/shoulders. I have to be able to work out at home though because the closest gym is well over an hours drive away. I only have a set of 3 pound weights right now, but I can buy heavier ones if needed. I can use my arm, chest and upper back muscles, but things like pushups don't work because when I try my back arches, but my hips basically keep touching the floor. Also, my triceps are pretty weak because of the level of my injury.

I'm hoping to get a handcycle and I know using it will help a lot, but as I don't have the $5000+ needed to get one right now I thought I'd do the best I can to build up my strength as much as possible in the meantime.

I did find the following information from a study if it helps:

Of the muscles studied, the brachial biceps and triceps, anterior deltoid and pectoralis major muscles could be anticipated to propel the wheelchair forward, whereas the posterior deltoid and trapezius muscles could be expected to play a role, especially during the recovery phase.

Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Can someone suggest or make a good bodybuilding plan for me?

I started recently after a break due to injury and got into strength training. Although I like lifting heavy and having strength gains, the programs don’t build a perfect physique. That is why I would like to switch to bodybuilding till I get my physique in decent shape so I can go back to strength training later. I don’t want to give up the strength side completely ( I like 5x5 on heavy lifts ). Can anybody suggest a good bodybuilding program that ensures hypertrophy of all muscle groups but still has some aspects from strength training.

Can I switch entirely to Dumbbell pressing?

Hi all

I'm not very good at Bench pressing, and as such have tailored my chest routines around Dumbbell pressing instead, and since I've done this I've made reasonable strength gains on chest. My training is entirely focused on strength, but I've received conflicting wisdom as to whether Dumbbells or the Bar are better for strength development.

Another issue I have is that the Dumbbells in my gym don't go higher than 50kg, which means that if I ever get to the stage where I'm pressing two 50kg Dumbells, I won't be able to progress further than that unless I switch back to bench pressing. Given that I'm focused on strength above all else, this is pretty much an inevitability. Would it be better if I brought the focus back to the bench or if I simply kept it up with the Dumbbells, which I've found to be a far more effective chest strength builder.

Thoughts?

What do you guys do after a max lift?

I squatted 300 1 rep max. My body is resting. I ate beef and pasta after my lift. Any other advice besides rest and sleep to boost my recovery?

Losing Weight and Gaining Muscle

I'm 16, 6 foot 4 and weigh around 195.

I just started lifting about 3 weeks ago and was wondering if I can get muscle while losing weight. I currently lift Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, while increasing weight 2.5 every time I do 5x5 reps on those days (I know there is a name for this but not sure what it is.) But anyway, I started doing cardio, only burning about 200-400 calories every off day but it's slowly increasing each day, while only eating about 1000-1500 calories a day but prioritize high protein meals.

So could I lose weight but also turn fat into muscle while doing this?

I only want to do this till I reach around 180-185 and then maintain my weight.

Any feedback on my program?

Hello,

I am following this routine at the moment. It's a 2-week rotation upper / lower split. The sets I marked in Orange and Green are supersets, so the colored exercises will be performed without rest according to their color. I don't do Deadlifts a lot because I have 2 slipped discs (work related older injury) and deadlifts cause issues.

Overload of the Central Nerve System - any tips?

Hey all. Last week, I felt pretty sluggish, my heart began sticking and my left arm felt extremely sore and warm. I went to the doctor and he told me, that my central nerve system have been overloaded from the training I've been doing combined with my mental health. I was thinking if anyone in this subreddit has been dealing with the same situation - fatigue/overloading the CNS and if they have any suggestions to recover properly except for relaxing your body.

I now feel somewhat beat up after testing my new maxes. Do you guys know of any programs that will help with active recovery but also help practice your main lifts to maintain form?

When asking for a spot on bench I'll say something like "no help with liftoff, don't touch the bar unless I've completely failed or I ask" but it usually doesn't work. As soon as the bar really slows down while grinding the last rep, they jump in to help out.

Obviously it's best to get someone you know, who really understands, but that's not the question here.

How do you keep your back straight and prevent the bar from hitting your hamstrings in Hack Squat?

I’ve tried it only once in my gym and someone pointed out that my back would round while getting the bar up. If I try to keep my back straighter, the bar slams into my hamstrings. I’m not using very heavy weight either? I’ve tried to follow tutorials from youtube but I can’t do it correctly. Any tips and advice on how to do it? I do it as an accessory for my back squats.

Body wasted away due to chronic illness, what exercises am I missing for a full body workout?

Back when I was 13, I began working out, and had killer abs and biceps by the time I was 14. But not long after, I came down with chronic functional nausea. The result is that I'm 22 and far weaker than when I was 12. Just assuming the pushup position causes my body to tremble under the duress.

Now that I have a medicine that at least manages to tone down the nausea a bit, I've decided to suck it up and just grit my teeth over the exertion worsening the nausea. Trouble is, I need to get as full a body workout as possible. I've only 2 5kg dumbbells, and a 20kg long-bar thing, but I think I've got everything down except the upper back.

Here's the work out. I've been doing it twice a day the past four days, and here's the results of the second set I just finished:

Pushups - 9

Situps - 25

Bench press - 11

Lying Fly - 18

wrist curl up - 25

wrist curl down - 20

curls - 14

Squat - 35s, 20s, 20s

Toelifts - 20

Bent Over Row - 22

Deadlift - 40

Triceps Extension - 9

Time: 26m

So aye, it's all there except the upper back. Any ideas?

Are flat sole shoes (Chucks) okay for squatting and deadlifting?

Okay, so I’ve looked everywhere and there are no lifting shoes available here in India. No sports brand has them on their shops or online. The only ones I could find were on Amazon. Those Nikes and Reebok are imported from the states and well they are very very expensive for a student like me. So I was wondering if it’s alright to squat and deadlift in flat sole converse. I was doing it barefoot until now but I got called out for it at gym.

Technogym Isotonic P020 bench

About 7 or 8 years ago my dad bought an adjustable weight bench from a gym that was closing down. That bench now sits in my garage gym. i did some research and i think the model of bench is a "Technogym Isotonic adjustable bench P020" although there are several pictures of the bench model online labelled as "Panca Regolabile". The bench feels solid enough and is decently heavy but I wanted to see what the recommended max weight was so I contacted technogym.

They told me that the max weight the bench was designed to hold (user and barbell weight) was 110KG (242lbs). Which is concerning as everyone who uses this bench has a combined BW and barbell weight of more than 110KG. The strongest guy that comes over weighs 97KG and benches almost 140KG so when he's using the bench its got 237KG (523lbs) on it in total.

Does anyone have this bench? or have any other information on how much weight the model can hold? Thanks.

Would these tips work for your first year of lifting?

Annual Progress in Powerlifting.

For the powerlifters here, how much did you increase you S/B/D and total by in 2017. How many years have you been training?

I'll start off with my own experience. My first gym total was last summer with 705lbs (320KG). I'd been weight training for some time before but not very seriously (apart from for bench) and had never maxed out on squats. Yesterday I got a total PR with 906lbs (411KG).

From summer 2017 to now my squat has gone from 232-287lbs (105KG-130KG) and bench from 210-256lbs (95KG-116KG) and Deadlift from (265-364lbs) 120KG-165KG

Not amazing prgress but I'm very happy with it.

Lifting shoes.

Currently I squat in a pair of Adidas powerlift 2.0 shoes. and DL and bench in some old Adidas Neo trainers I've had for years. I'm thinking of upgrading my lifting shoes but am unsure of where to go.

I really like the look of the reebok legacy lifters so does anyone have any experience with these?

Alternatively I have a friend with a pair of almost new Adidas Leistung 16 shoes (The Rio olympic ones not the leistung II shoes) he is willing to sell to me pretty cheap. Does anyone have experience with these?

I don't really want to get adipowers as I have quite wide feet and know they are a slim fitting shoe.

Another choice i have is wrestling shoes or boxing shoes. These may be better for dealifts but I could use them for squats (I squat low bar). Would anyone recommend shoes like these or another good deadlift shoe?

Finally I don't know whether I need new shoes for bench, my bench is pretty strong and progressing nicely. But what shoes do you guys wear for benching?

Behind The Back Barbell Shrugs Vs. Rack Pulls for trap development. Which one is better?

I’ve never tried rack pulls but I was thinking of trying them out. Are they better than BTB Shrugs? Also do they involve other muscles other than traps unlike shrugs which a re mostly traps?

Question about Lat pull down and Tricep push down.

How does move your hands towards the edge of the Lat pull down bar change the muscles worked? Usually I put my hands near the middle and just pull straight down.

What are the differences between Tricep push down grips? For examples there's the V-Bar,Straight-bar and the rope that always reminds me of testicles.

What's the differences between all these grips do they work different muscles, if so which ones?

I want to learn more about correct form and things like which muscles various grips work but I don't know where to go for that info. Advice? I usually just ask jacked guys at the gym what exercises do what and how my form is.

Problems with Wilks score.

I don't know how wilks coefficient is calculated but I've been told that it is skewed in favour of very light and very heavy lifters. While playing around with an online wilks calculator I checked this out: (all calculations were for a male lifter totalling a nice round 2000 lbs)

200 lbs BW 577 wilks

300 lbs BW 509 wilks

400 lbs BW 488 wilks

All seems normal so far, lighter lifter has a higher score when total is the same. As it should be...

500 lbs BW 502 wilks

550 lbs BW 609 wilks

Here's where it gets interesting...

600 lbs BW 1351 wilks

610 lbs BW 2169 wilks

611 lbs BW 2320 (adding 1 lb in BW increased wilks score by 151 points)

620 lbs BW 7114 wilks

623 lbs BW 28005 wilks

623.995 lbs BW gave a wilks score of 268.9 MILLION points (WTF)

A chart I found online stated that the top raw IPF lifters based on wilks had scores in the 550-600 points range. Now I know that weighing in at 600+ lbs would be pretty much impossible unless someone was ridiculously tall with a massive frame and very very fat as well (which would inevitably screw with their leverages). Also interesting is that if you increase BW from 623.995 to 623.996 the wilks score comes out as -30.8 million.

So how is wilks calculated?

Is there a better way to compare lifters of different weights?

Just something that enticed my inner nerd.

Workout routine check

Okay so this is my current workout routine. Just wanted some suggestions/comments if you guys think it's good/not enough/completely wrong.

Don't get much time so I do strength training 3 times a week, 10-12 exercises per session(supersets), and each session lasting for 60-90 minutes.

  • Mon- shoulders and legs
  • Tues- chest and back
  • Wed-*
  • Thurs- arms
  • Sat-*

*- on Wed and Sat, if I go, I do cardio and abs. I try to do at least 1 abs day a week.

Just wanted your opinion if you think this is enough. I'm aiming for a tight tummy with a hint of abs and decent muscles. Not bulging as regular gym goers aim for.

I'm about 73 kgs, 5'8 on a 1500-1700 calorie diet(mostly healthy); 20y/o doing work that hardly requires any movement.

Thanks

Is this Cheating?

At what point does a squat to depth no longer count?

Is it when you use a belt?

When you use sleeves?

When you use wraps?

When you use a squat suit?

I don't compete in a federation for power lifting but am very interested in getting stronger. I have an end goal for my squat at around 300KG (660lbs) Which I want to achieve raw. I have always considered belt and sleeves (basically usapl/IPF rules) as raw. Recently I bought some knee sleeves made of knee wrap material as opposed to neoprene and they are triple ply sleeves. Is this considered cheating on squat? Tell me what you think.

Lifting on a fasting day?

I have been on a fat loss program since October and have lost around 25kg. Recently, I have started doing 24 hour fasts periodically to aid losing those last few kilos.

Is it a good idea to do a lifting/strength training session on days when I am fasting? Or is it a waste of time lifting on a day when I won't be giving my body the nutrients it needs to properly recover. Any thoughts?

Having kids makes us more emotional. why? I remember before I had kids I could see a sad part of a movie or a story of some sort and be like yeah that is sad and move on. Now pixar movies have me tore up, stories have me crying. Why is there such an emotional shift?

Any other dads out there cried at the end of the movie Coco?
