EMSK: How to purify water during an emergency
The treatments described below work only to remove bacteria or viruses from water. If you suspect the water is unsafe because of chemicals, oils, poisonous substances, sewage or other contaminants, do not drink the water. Don't drink water that is dark colored, has an odor or contains solid materials.
Purifying by boiling
If your tap water is unsafe, boiling is the best method to kill disease-causing organisms.
If tap water is unavailable, the following may be considered as potential water sources. Water taken from these sources should be boiled before drinking.
- Rainwater
- Lakes
- Rivers and streams
- Natural springs
- Ponds
Caution: Many chemical pollutants will not be removed by boiling.
Cloudy water should be filtered before boiling. Filter cloudy water using coffee filters, paper towels, cheesecloth or a cotton plug in a funnel.
- Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one full minute.
- Let the water cool before drinking.
- Add two drops of household bleach per gallon to maintain water quality while in storage.
Purifying by adding liquid chlorine bleach
- Treat water by adding liquid household bleach, such as Clorox or Purex.
- Household bleach is typically between 5.25 percent and 8.25 percent chlorine. Read the label.
- Avoid using bleaches that contain perfumes, dyes and other additives. Be sure to read the label.
- Cloudy water should be filtered before adding bleach.
- Place the water in a clean container. Add the amount of bleach according to the table below.
- Mix thoroughly and let stand for at least 60 minutes before drinking.
| Volume of Water to be Treated | Bleach Solution to Add |
|---|---|
| 1 quart/1 liter | 5 Drops |
| 1/2 gallon/2 quarts/2 liters | 10 Drops |
| 1 gallon | 1/4 teaspoon |
| 5 gallons | 1 teaspoon |
| 10 gallons | 2 teaspoons |

Had some visual hallucinations while warming up. What the heck?
Last Wednesday I was doing deadlift sets, and after setting the bar down I had lights flash across my vision, like someone was shooting bottle rockets or waving a sparkler past my head. Anyone know what this might be? It wasn't the typical "seeing stars" from standing up quickly or about to pass out. I felt fine, not light headed at all. I was a little freaked out, but after a few minutes rest I completed the rest of my sets without issue.

Starting Strength
Hi Guys,
Seasoned lifter here but new to strictly strength training. I am doing starting strength as my strength sucks dick for the amount of years I've been lifting. My Squat sucks, My bench is average and my deadlift is average.
I'm on to week 3 of SS and I am absolutely obsessed. The weights are starting to catch up to me though. I had to repeat the last workout twice as my strength wasn't there.
Is this OK to do? If so, how many times should I do this without progressing to the next weight. Should I be hitting each 3 sets with 5 before? The reason I ask is that my squat has progressed marginally from my previous workout.
Hitting 3 x 2 x 1 on the first workout then managing 4 x4 x 3.
Should I remain at this weight until I hit the 5 x 5 x 5?
Many thanks for any help!

Dropping Fat... Alot of it (advice needed)
Hello people.
just a quick overview of my food situations, I will (am) eating at a 500 Calorie deficit.
I am 26, 250pounds and have already lost 53 pounds. I have tasted the success of weight loss, and kind of stalled and started drinking again.
I am now as of today back at the gym. I will stick to my diet as I know diet is 80% of weight loss. I want to see if this plan with the calorie deficit is worth it and ask a few questions. I do play sports but thats irrelivant now because stopped over Christmas.
Anyway: Monday: weight training Tuesday: Hour cardio with elevation mask Wednesday: weight training Thursday: Cardio with Mask Friday: Weight training Saturday Cardio with mask Sunday rest.
This is the plan i am heading into and started this morning, the weight lifting is FULL BODY, at least 1 excercise per muscle group. I have protein powder but sticking on a diet of 500 deficit, leaves me to eat 1700 calories a day, should I use 300 with my metoblic protein shake.
My end goal, in 18months or 2 years is be ripped, for now - I am trying to lose around 60pounds.190 is my goal. This is an extreme routine but I Can stick to it. how long do you think it will take my to drop the 60pounds on this routine. After 3 weeks the weight training goes into splits and concentrated, can I expect to gain a pound or 2 first 3 weeks of noob gains?
Thanks.

EMSK: how to write a resume as a recent college grad with no work experience...
A lot of job seekers don't include their "non-jobs" (i.e. non-paid activities) on their resume. You can take advantage of this with some creative language, and present these non-jobs in a way that shows their relevance to the job you're applying for.
Remember: potential employers don't care about what you want, they care about what you can do for them.
In the "Experience" part of your resume, include things like past volunteer work, extra-curricular activities and clubs that you're passionately involved in, and things of that nature - and describe your role as if it were a "real job".
So, for example, don't just write "volunteered for summer, teaching children" - speak to your duties. You might want to instead write "experience managing large groups of people, developed engaging training materials to help foster expertise".
There are more examples here (where I got the idea from) but this is the tl;dr version. Hope it helps.

Back to strength training and it feels so good. But what is a good ratio?
I finally have started real strength and power training after an extensive physical therapy and rehab journey from 4 herniated discs and 4 bulging discs in my lumbar and cervical vertebrae from an MMA Fight.
Stats 28 y/o Male 200lbs 14% bf 6'
Squat - 305lbs Deadlift - 350lbs Bench Press - 230 Push Press - 155lbs
What are good ratios for each I have seen everything from 1:1 to 3:1 depending on the lift?
Honestly I dont hold too much weight into a 1 RM for my athletic performance, but like to keep the 1rm as a measuring stick along with 5RM and 10RM because at least for athletics and fighting I believe it is not just important to be powerful for 1 rep but repetitively for many reps just like in a fight.
Where do you guys hold the 1RM in the performance spectrum?

Looking for some insight from anyone familiar with training-related back injuries
Male here, 31 yo, 238 lbs, strength training for two years, SQ 425 BP 300 DL 525 OHP 190
TLDR: Hurt my back deadlifting, doctor wasn't too forthcoming with the diagnosis, feel much better now and wondering what the hell happened.
Last Wednesday I hurt my lower back while attempting a 535 lb deadlift. I ramped up to it following the 5/3/1 scheme, and I was feeling perfectly fine. I got the bar about 3-4 inches off the floor when suddenly I felt a sharp stabbing pain to the left of my spine just above my butt. It was pretty intense, and the next morning I had almost no mobility. I couldn't bend over at all or bring my left leg up from a sitting position.
I saw the doctor the following morning and he didn't quite diagnose me. Rather, he prescribed me some Flexeril and told me to rest and stretch, which I've done. I was really concerned that this was gonna take me out for a few weeks, but over the weekend my back started to feel much better much quicker than I expected. This morning I almost feel back to 100%, there's just a little lingering soreness.
I'm curious if anyone's ever experienced anything similar and if there's any clue as to what exactly happened so I can avoid it in the future if possible.

A friend in need
So i have lurked around here for a bit and read a lot of threads and what i really liked is that you can ask for advice and that people are willing to help you out.
So first off im 18 years old, im 186cm, 93kg, i have learned to do a muscle up, (chicken wing style), i can dumbbell press 40kg in each hand (80kg) i usually use the boxing bag at the end of each workout like 20 min or so. I train my abs 2 times a week.
This is my first 2 week plan Tuesday: Chest, Shoulder Chest: 5x5 dumbbell benchpress (i work up to 40kg, so first is 32 then 34 and etc. 3x8 dumbbell incline press (32kg each arm) 3x8 cable cross (can do around 40-45 kg, each cable)
Shoulder: 5x5 smith overhead shoulder press ( around 40-50kg) 3x8 single dumbbell raise (15kg or 20 kg) 3x8 cable rear delt fly (15-20kg) 3x8 side laterals (8-10 kg)
Wednesday: Legs, Abs 5x5 barbell squat (75kg-80kg) 3x8 lunges (20kg each) 3x8 seated leg curl (40kg) 8 times a leg) 3x8 lying leg curl (40kg ) 8 times a leg
Abs: 3x10 oblique cable crunch (65kg) 3x20 min walking farmers carry (20kg in right arm, 5kg in left and switching) 3x10-15-20 landmine 180 with 20kg on and a bit of bar exercises (building up for the front lever) found the name its hanging pike but only 3 or 4 times though
Thursday: Arms, Biceps, Triceps, 3x8 one arm dumbbell preacher hammer curl (14-16kg) 5x5 dumbbell curl (16-20kg) 3x8 concentration curls (10kg) i do this at the end to really hit that last spot 3x8 incline hammer curls (12-14kg)
Triceps: 3x8 tricep dumbbell kickback (10kg) at end of workout 3x8 skullchrushers ( i do it with dumbbells and the variation where it goes behind the head, like anthlean-x or something on youtube :D) 14kg 3x8 cable triceps exension (same movement just with cable, dont have the machine in my gym) (50kg) 3x8 dips (10-20kg) depends on my mood I used to do triceps pushdown but did too much so i did not feel the use of the muscle as much as with the other exercises (i did not feel as much as a burn)
Friday: Back, Abs 5x5 deadlift (100-120kg) depends on someone there to spot me 3x8 bent over barbell rows (60kg) 3x8 pulldowns on machine (60kg) i warmup with 3x6 pull ups 3x8 cable rows (60kg)
abs 3x10 sit ups 3x10 heel touches 3x10 leg raises 3x10 hanging knee raises
Thats my workout plan for the first 2 weeks i go high weights low rep 5x5 then in the following 2 weeks i switchout those 5x5 to 3x8 and do low weight high rep and all the other excersises that have 3x8 i do 3x10
At the end of each workout i go home and use the boxing bag for about 20 min and then hit the shower. I take proteinpowder LinusPro WHEY ISO
So please guys comment and say what you think. i have done this about a 1 year and i can see some changes, i eat healthy, though i drink now and then which ruins it all.
Is it possible to gain sixpack with this workout? right now i struggle to get rid of my love handles but with this workout im thinking my body looks neat exept those damn love handles lol. So again please comment and give tip, tricks. If some names dont make any sense please say so because im not quite sure of the names of the exercises in english ^

EMSKR How to develop the stamina for late night drinking sessions with clients/colleagues?
What I mean is without relying on accrued alcohol tolerance and sacrificing health (Burning both ends of candle) how do I develop and maintain a level of energy to keep up mental alacrity and physical stamina to thrive in late night drinking/bonding session with colleagues and clients?
I have a pretty healthy diet and stick to a eating schedule so my hunger, energy and metabolism isnt all over the place. I sleep early and wake up early except for said meeting with clients which arent an everyday thing so its fine.
For exercise I do 100 push ups, planks and 100 burpees every morning (Prisoners workout) and plan on biking to work.

EMSK: How to make great coffee at home
If you want truly great coffee, not just good or acceptable, then it comes down to three things:
- The beans
- The Grind
- The Brew Method
There is a lot of hipster dick swinging with all of this, so here's the most basic and unbiased guide I can write. If you have two of the three items in the list, you will have good coffee. For great coffee you need all three.
The Beans
This is where the most preference comes into play. The only universal truths are that you want whole beans. Once beans are ground they start to lose their goodness. An easy comparison to make is garlic. Cut up some garlic and then try to use it for cooking in a few days, it will have lost most of its flavor. The beans are the same.
It's best to buy freshly roasted, locally if you live in a spot where that's an option. In places like Vancouver there are many choices of great roasted beans. If not, you can find good stuff here and there. Just know that Starbucks roasts their beans on the dark/bitter side. It's fine if you like it, but most people would like something less bitter.
The Grind
The grind is far more important than most people think. You want to own a grinder, so you can grind your coffee right before you brew it, but this is where the biggest hurdle comes into play: a good grinder is expensive. It's not enough to simply have the beans crushed up, for making great coffee the beans need to be ground consistently. This means you need a quality Conical Burr grinder. You can talk to all the coffee snobs you want, but at the end of the day the best grinder you can get for the money is the Baratza Encore, it's $129 if you live in the US.
The Brew
There are really just three brewing methods worth talking about: pour over, aeropress, french press.
A lot of people will claim that a pour over can't be beat, but the time and expense of it isn't worth it to me. I like the taste of an aeropress brew better, and the Aeropress is only $27.
The only reason to consider a french press is if you need to be making three or more cups of coffee at once, and want it to be as easy as possible.
You may note that I haven't mentioned espresso at all. That's because it's simply not possible to make great espresso without putting up an incredible investment. You can get away with a Rocket r58 and a Baratza Virtuoso grinder for great espresso at home, but that's going to be a $3,000 setup. You really can't make great espresso on a cheap machine, or with anything but a superb grinder.
TL;DR: Buy an aeropress ($27), get the Encore Grinder ($129), and some locally roasted whole beans, and you will have better coffee at home than you can get at just about any cafe.
EMSK: How to "first date", by following the rule of "TWO".
A first date can be a scary experience for the both of you. So keep things "Light" by following the rule of two:
"Two people, Two hours, Two in the afternoon, and Two bucks."
Why?
Two people: Keep it personal, you want to be able to meet the person, to see if she/he is worth your time.
Two Hours: Keep it short, scheduling no more than two hours gives you time to meet the person. If things are going well, it leaves them wanting for more, if things are going awry it gives you a chance to escape. If you schedule, people will also be more willing to open up since they know this won't drag on forever (or too short)
Two in the afternoon: Preferably in the weekend. It's not very late, or very early. It's also a good time since, you are not taking up important "night out" time, or time with the family.
Two bucks: (Ok, proably more) Keep it "cheap". You don't need to impress your date on the first time you go out. Keep it simple, a coffee, a walk in the park, a beer, a game of pool....etc. The point is keeping it simple so the other person doesn't seem pressured.
So the point of this "rule" is to keep it simple so you and your date are at ease and are able to meet and get to know each other.
Try to adjust to your liking.

Review of The Champion's Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train, and Thrive
I first heard of The Champion's Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train, and Thrive on Lewis Howes podcast. After hearing the interview, I felt encouraged to purchase this book, and was glad I did. The book is full of great lessons, advice, and perspectives of amateur and professional athletes. We all know there are certain athletes that just stick out, whom are able to outperform, and are the "go-to-person" during game-deciding moments. Many of these athletes share that it is not just their physical ability that matters, rather it is the mental game that matters most. It is all about how you think and train your mind.
There are many sport psychology and personal development books which provide advice on how to improve areas of your life. This book provides free and simple strategies used by great athletes to train your mind. From the beginning, the book provides applicable skills, scenarios, affirmations, and awesome quotes to aide in your journey. The author preaches that every challenge must be faced no matter the circumstance. Whether you’re a professional athlete, a corporate titian, a business man, a retailer, or just someone who is trying to get by this book also provides strategies to overcome the inner resistance we all face; it is just a matter of finding the inner potential.
A few of the take-aways include: See Success (Visualization), Stay Positive, Be in the Moment, Mental Toughness, Find Your Zone, Be Comfortable with Discomfort, Realize Everyone Fails and much more.
Anyone can be a champion no matter where they are in life; one way to achieve this is by changing the way one thinks. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to understand the mentality of excellence and has a desire to improve their quality of life.

EMSK how to convert Farenheit to Celcius in their head.
I'm no mathematician by any stretch. But driving between Texas and New Mexico one wintry day, I started playing with my car's outside thermometer, flipping between F and C. I remembered the formula,
°C x 9/5 + 32 = °F
But who can really do the 9/5 conversion in their head? I reasoned that 9/5 is just multiplying by 2 and subtracting 10%.
So I started playing with the converted formula,
[(°C x 2)-10%]+ 32 = °F
and lo & behold, it worked!
Ex 1.
10°C to F.
10 x 2 = 20.
20 - 10% = 20 - 2 = 18.
18 + 32 = 50
10°C = 50°F
~~~~~~~~
Ex 2.
37°C (avg body temp) to F
37 x 2 = 74
74 - 10% = 74 - 7.4 = (74 - 7)=67, 67-0.4= 66.6.
66.6 + 32 = 98.6°F
It kept me occupied for some time as I checked my answers on the fly in real time on my car's thermometer.
Nowadays, as an American I don't even bother with the calculation. Cold but not freezing? C in the single digits. Chilly? Somewhere in the teens. Pleasant? 20-25. Warm 26-32. Hot 33-39. I know that 40C is 104F. So, that's my upper limit. I can tell you the temp in C to within a degree or two just from feel now. It still kind of amazes me that my fellow Americans outright reject such an easy system of measurement. But, like those who learn a new language I still don't immediately think in Celsius but rather convert it on the sly.
I hope this helps my fellow imperial leaning American brothers!
I'm no mathematician by any stretch. But driving between Texas and New Mexico one wintry day, I started playing with my car's outside thermometer, flipping between F and C. I remembered the formula,
°C x 9/5 + 32 = °F
But who can really do the 9/5 conversion in their head? I reasoned that 9/5 is just multiplying by 2 and subtracting 10%.
So I started playing with the converted formula,
[(°C x 2)-10%]+ 32 = °F
and lo & behold, it worked!
10 x 2 = 20.
