EMSK: Feminism might be for you
Feminism sucks right? "All men must die!", "Gender doesn't exist!". There's a new pronoun every week. It's all rather boring.
I've discovered something interesting though: You CAN actually be a feminist.
The reason some people are turning away from feminism is because there are actually two distinct schools of feminism that are in play: Liberal Feminism and Radical Feminism.
Liberal Feminism is about writing equality into law, establishing equal pay, giving more opportunity for girls and disadvantaged people to get into STEM, stopping domestic violence and sexual assault, and generally giving equal opportunities to all people regardless of their gender, race, ability or sexuality. It's the one that benefits our wives, mothers & daughters.
Radical Feminism is a school of thought that seeks to abolish many institutions regardless of the law, such as condemning marriage, "political lesbianism", abolishing gender identity, and advocating gender separatism - ie arguing that men and women shouldn't ever live together for example. Not really our cup of tea. It doesn't appear to be compatible with egalitarianism or even logic, and many feminists disagree with it.
So in short, yes you can actually be a feminist, and no you're not required to be a radical feminist... You get to stick to what you're doing, plus help build a better world for the women in your life. It's like putting a label on being a good man.

The anxiety of an expecting father, and how everyone shares their worst experiences of child raising with you.
In the months leading up the birth of my first child, I noticed something strange occurring. Almost everyone that I told the news to had the same reaction. First, they congratulated me, then they proceeded to tell me endless stories of the horrors of childbirth and fatherhood.
They would share tales of sleepless nights, never ending inconsolable crying and the mountains upon mountains of poo that regularly explodes out of nappies.
All of this combined in my mind to create a storm of anxious rumination. As the pregnancy progressed, my mental health steadily declined. I would bounce between dissociation and anxiety with a dash of regret thrown in there.
This is the post that I wish was available to me during that time.
I wrote it because I wanted to share with expecting fathers that having a child is not as bad as people say it is going to be. That the anxiety you are feeling now will pass, and that you won’t lose yourself completely.

My Workout Plan (Need Advice)
Ok to start off I'm 13, and I workout 5 days a week and of these 5 days 2 of them I do a ab routine and the other 3 I do a main workout that focuses on gaining muscle. I eat around 2,000-2,500 calories a day and I workout for my ab workouts around 1.30 hours to 1.45 hours and for my main workout I workout about 1.30 to 2 hours.
Main Workout:
Run 1.25 Miles 40 Pushups (Repeat Twice) 50 Crunches (Repeat Twice) 90 Second Plank 14 Military Presses on Weighted Bench (Repeat Twice) 14 Triceps Extensions (Repeat Twice) 20 Walking Lunges (Repeat Twice) 30 Squats with Barbell Weight Plate (Repeat Twice) 20 Pull-ups (Repeat Twice) 20 Bench Presses (Repeat Twice) 8 Military Presses Standing up (Repeat Twice) 16 Squats with Barbell (Repeat Twice) 10 Curls with Barbell (Repeat Twice) 28 Deadlifts 25 Leg lifts with Barbell Weight Plates (Repeat Four Times) 20 Curls (Repeat Twice) 14 Dumbbells open and close when laying down (Repeat Twice) 24 Arm's open and close outward barbell weight lifts (Repeat Twice) 90 Second's of Flooder Kicks 45 Feet in and out while laying down 35 Russian Twists 90 Second Right Side Plank 90 Second Left Side Plank 90 Second Plank 40 Holding dip bar then lift legs together straight out up and down 35 Dip bar legs together then lift straight up to chest 45 Crunches 45 Quick Light Curls with Barbell
Ab Workout:
Run 1.25 55 Push-ups 24 Feet high up push-ups 50 Crunches (Repeat Twice) 45 Dip bar legs together then straight up and down 125 Leg in and Out laying on my Back 90 Second Plank 60 Second legs straight up arms behind your head 60 Second Superman 45 On your Back arms straight up then sit-up half way 100 On your Back legs together up and Down 75 Second flutter kicks 14 Triceps Extensions (Repeat Twice) 20 Walking Lunges (Repeat Twice) 24 Curls with Dumbbells 35 Barbell on your knees roll in and out 20 barbell straight up then sit-up 14 deadlifts 48 Barbell Squats 45 Total gym Bench angled Pull-ups 85 Total gym angled leg lifts 45 Sit-ups with Weight Plate on chest 90 Second Star Plank 40 each side standing up elbow to knee 70 Russian twists 45 Windshield wipers 70 Arms together straight up crunches 80 Plank Stance elbow to knee 20 deadlifts 45 leg lifts (heavy) 25 barbell Russian twists while standing up
So their are my two main workouts, if their both so shitty that they need to be remade, and if you could make me a workout that not only will build me muscle in my legs and arms, but also build and strengthen my core, then I would love that so much. If their fine and just need some tweaks then I would love any criticisms on them, because I'm just 13 and in reality I don't know much about the workout world, and where to start off when building muscle and strengthening my core, and just toning my body.
Need a Workout Plan for 4-5 Days a Week Please Help
I'm 13 I weigh 115-120 Pounds I'm About 5'8 to 5'9ish and I'm skinny if your wondering I really Want to build muscle but need a good workout plan for someone my age with a restricted amount of equipment at my fingertips.
My equipment consist of 2 sets of dumbbells which are 2 20 Pounds and 2 25 Pounds, I mostly use the 25's but sometimes have to change of to the 20's. Next I have a Gold's Gym Power Tower, which if you look up has a Pull Up Bar, a Push Up station, and a place where you hold yourself up with your arm's then lift your legs. Along with these thing's I have a Barbell and barbell weights, and a Weighted Bench where I can do bench presses and leg lifts at the end of it with weighted plates, along with dips. Then I have a Elliptical and a Treadmill I can use. Lastly I have a Total Gym which I can do angled pull-ups on it and use my legs to go up and down at a angle
So with all of this can someone make me a workout guide of 4-5 workouts a week of Muscle building and Cardio and Abs and such? I would really appreciate, so if you can thank you.

Redesigning weight lifting equipment
This is a quick survey (should only take about 5 minutes) for my senior thesis project! I am looking to redesign weight lifting equipment. Whether you are a beginner or experienced weightlifter, your participation will tremendously help me gather much needed info.
Workout Guide (Need help making a workout)
Ok so I'm 13 and before you laugh and say I don't need to build muscle at this age, and I won't take it seriously, I've just gotta say I'm tired of being just skinny, just another skinny kid in my grade. Nothing more, nothing less, I want to be more, I want to train and show myself I can do things if I work hard enough. Some people want new video games, and all that stupid stuff, but all I really want is just to do strength workouts and lead myself to a point of where I have viewable muscle and a nice strong 6 pack, not just some stupid I starve myself to get a 6 pack.
Now to start off here's the stuff I got to workout with, (As of right now I can't go to a gym) But I do have a Weighted Bench where I can do Bench Presses, and at the end of it, it has a leg lift where you put weight plates on it and lift with your legs, also the seat back cushion is moveable so I can adjust the seat from being all the way down to straight up (It has 4 different postions) Next I have a pull-up bar, along with something where you put your back against a cushion then hold yourself up by your arms and lift your legs together up and down straight forward. Along with those things I have some dumbells, and a tredmel and a olypitical. Also to add in I do have a barbell so you can add in Barbell workouts such as barbell Squats because I do have a bar for that.
I really hope someone can make a workout for me, and just to be clear I can workout 5 days a week, and up to 1.30-2 hours of that time, but I prefer around 1.45 hours. If you can make me a workout or just give me any tips that would be amazing, thank you.
EMSK how to not be too confident
Some people are too confident, if you are too confident, you should try not being too confident.
-
Try not being to confident.
-
Don't try not being too unconfident.
-
Tell yourself not to be to confident.
-
Make sure not to tell yourself to be too confident.
-
Don't make sure not to tell yourself to be unconfident.
-
Absolutely don't make sure not to tell yourself to be too confident.
-
Ask your friends if you are being too confident.
-
If your friends tell you you are not too confident, it's probably because your overly confident aura makes them unsettled, try being less confident and asking again.
-
Keep becoming less confident and repeatedly asking until one of them tells you you are too confident, at this point you are now too confident so try to be less confident.
-
Keep becoming less confident and repeatedly asking until one of them tells you you are too confident, at this point you are now too confident so try not to be so not confident.
-
Just be yourself.

EMSK: Psychological theories are just as important and just as practical to have knowledge of as practical skills. Perhaps even more practical than knowing how to survive a bear attack. Seriously can we not have both?
Real manly guys, hating on a 20 year old for explaining a psychological theory. "He doesn't have the right to give life advice, he's 20!" Wait what?
He's explaining a psychological theory. A well founded one with a lot of supported evidence. He's not telling you how to life your life, he's making you aware of a thing your brain does. But this is all besides the point.
How old do you have to be to give life advice? 60? 80? 21? Who are you to judge? And why would an older person know better? Seriously, why would they?
And another thing, link for context, since when is this sub actively not for psychological theories BUT instead for "practical and applicable skills in life" such as:
-
How to build a fire with one match
-
How to survive a bear attack
-
How to escape a car sinking in deep water
I'll acknowledge the rest of his videos as useful, but come on.

A girl I was seeing was incredibly nervous about the possibility of transmitting HPV. Needless to say, it's a pretty pernicious disease, affecting both men and women, however, symptoms do not typically show in men, while they can be quite severe in women. Both are a high risk for certain types of cancer.
Walk up to the pharmacy and ask for the shot. It will take no longer than twenty minutes, and if that's the cost of peace of mind for you and any future partners, it is well worth it. A plus is that if you have health-insurance, it will probably be free.
EMSK: Nobody Wants To Hear Your 'Excuses'.
➤When we don’t perform as well as we wanted we often feel an almost irresistible compulsion to let those around us know the reasons why.
We believe we alone have access to the relevant variables, variables that handily explain why we came up short. If not for these variables the result would have been much different and we feel like we need to clue others in to this fact.
The problem is that in a situation as emotionally charged as failing to live up to a standard, possibly looking bad in the eyes of others not to mention feeling bad about yourself
It’s sometimes difficult to differentiate between truth and rationalization.
Plus no one wants to hear your excuses, the only person who cares about what might have been is you unless the outcome affected those around you in some important way too.
Often by making excuses you end up drawing undue negative attention to yourself, where if you had just said nothing no one would have even really noticed that you came up short.
It’s probably a good rule of thumb that if no one asks you what went wrong then you don’t need to bring it up.
If they do ask you’ll be ready with your excuses.
But really the main function of having these excuses should be to make the necessary adjustments to get a better result next time.
It’s only on the next go around that you’ll be able to tell whether your reasons for failing to reach the mark were legitimate or mere rationalizations.
➤ Stop focusing on making excuses and start focusing on improvement and good things will happen.
There is no excuse, there NEVER will be, stop comparing yourself to others.
I received a question today. Here’s what I was asked by a (22 years old), let’s call him John, from Italy.
➤Question
"My definition of success or my dream, is to write/compose a song for DoctorWho (sci-fi). Im working so hard in music since 2 years but still nothing, even little thing. In italy i see sometimes rappers becoming so famous in just 2-3 songs and is cant do nothing. What do I do??
My reply to him and anyone who has the same issue.
➤ Think about this. There's probably some kid out there whos dream is to become a musician but he lost both his hands in an accident and can't play an instrument.
This is extreme but I want you to understand that you're LUCKY to be in a position where you can make it.
Think about it. You want to be a composer, you're doing it and you're moving towards your dream and nothing is there to stop you!
➤ Go after what you truly desire as if it was your last day on earth. Every. Single. Fucking. Day.

EMSKR Why the hell did this sub turn into a sub for these psychological theories rather than practical and applicable skills in life?
I remember first subbing here when there were videos for things like "how to break out of a car that's being submerged under water" or things like "how to unclog a toilet without a plunger"
But recently, all I'm seeing are fucking videos for how to improve your life by changing your mentality. Yes, that's helpful, but that seems to belong in something like /r/getmotivated, not /r/emsk. I believe those videos have their place in people's lives, but I can't help but think that they do not belong here. This sub is slowly becoming a place where these psedu motivational videos get dumped for karma rather than a useful place for applicable information.
It's one thing to have someone tell you how to solve X with Y, it's another thing to have someone tell you to spell out a word without the vowels as they basically say "you shouldn't think this way, this THAT way".
I don't need someone to tell me that if I'm depressed, I should stop being depressed and be happy. I would rather watch a video seeing someone teach me how to properly pick up and dispose of my dog's diarrhea without a baggie.
I realize that there are still submissions that provide real useful information, but the proliferation of these pseudo /r/getmotivated posts has become overwhelming and has diluted the nature of this sub.
Can we please stop this nonsense and go back to the way this sub was intended to be?

EMSK: The 3-Hour Rules: What Top Leaders & Entrepreneurs Do To Maximize Their Growth [x-post from /r/decidingtobebetter]
If you are approaching your career as a specialist, what you need is 10,000 hours of deliberate practice and learning on a specific skill as mentioned in the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The numbers of the hour may vary but it basically means you need to stay focused and put in the work before expecting any return.
But being a leader is a completely different story. A good designer is not necessarily a good creative director for an agency, a brilliant developer is not guaranteed to become a good CEO for a startup, and a talented writer will not always become a good chief editor for a publishing firm.
The basic ground skills are crucial for one to become a leader, but you should always make sure your team is better than you at a specific skill. If you’re the CEO and you know more about programming than your developers, then you should reconsider your hiring process.
As a leader, we should always focus on growth, both the company and the individual. Most leaders like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Mark Zuckerberg are busy individuals, but they all know one thing as a fact.
To grow their company and their businesses, they must first improve themselves.
Many of these leaders set aside at least 3 hours a week, despite their extremely busy schedule, to deliberately grow themselves with these three routines and habits. And here are what they do:
Spend An Hour Each Week to Read
Books are my pass to personal freedom. – Oprah Winfrey
I’m an active user on Quora. And I answered many questions on the topic of self-improvement. One of the habit I stressed a lot is reading. For me, reading is a path to hacking the authors’ wisdom. You save yourself years of time when you learn something from books, which usually took the author decades to figure it out and put it into words.
We all know Bill Gates for Microsoft and his initiative to start the Giving Pledge with his wife Melinda Gates, and billionaire Warren Buffett. But did you know Bill Gates as an avid reader too? Check out the book reviews on his personal blog – Bills Notes.
Besides these, there are many other billionaire entrepreneurs and leaders practice extreme reading routine:
•Mark Cuban reads more than three hours every day. •Arthur Blank, co-founder of Home Depot, reads two hours a day. •Billionaire entrepreneur David Rubenstein reads six books a week. •Dan Gilbert, a self-made billionaire and owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, reads one to two hours a day.
Spend An Hour to Try Something New
Top leaders and entrepreneurs always spend times to experiment with new ideas. I once read an article on the job descriptions of every CEO, and these are the three most crucial and important tasks for every business leader.
Set the direction and vision for the company Manage the cash flow of the company Hiring the right people (and firing) to form a strong team Some might say these are simple works, but they are easier to say than to be done. They are tasks that cover a wide range of nature from operation management to sales and marketing. A leader doesn’t need to be an expert in a specific area to carry out these tasks, but one common trait required is the openness and willingness to learn and embrace new things.
Great leaders experiment new ideas with like-minded people by forming a mastermind group. Google famously allowed employees to experiment with new projects during 20 percent of their work time. Facebook encourages experimentation through Hack-a-Months.
One greatest example would be Elon Musk. He takes his experiment to the extreme by challenging many outdated industries in all his ventures such as Paypal, Tesla, and SpaceX. These experiments are what push the humanity forward and become the great invention for the future.
Spend An Hour to Reflect
You read to absorb new knowledge and wisdom, then you try doing new things to take your learning to the next level. Now spend another hour each week, to reflect on your actions, behaviors, results, and life in overall.
Successful leaders spend times to reflect because it brings clarity to their actions. Reflection strengthens one’s willpower, at the same time, it uncovers some mistakes we made in the past and so we can pick up new lessons from them quickly. Great leaders know this very well and do it often.
Just like reading and experimenting, you can do it in a group to double or even triple the impact. Form a group with like-minded people so you can share knowledge with each other. Brainstorming new ideas and even pointing out mistakes and considerable risks for each other.
Triple Your Improvement Rate
If you are spending 10,000 hours, deliberately practicing your craft, it’s certain that you will get somewhere. It’s the power of focused, consistent tiny actions that compounded by time. You will definitely achieve the level of mastery.
The power of the 3-hour rule is much greater, it can’t replace the practice itself for sure, but if you spend at least 3 hours a week on a side, you’re going to double or even triple your overall improvement rate. The 3-hour rule is the missing element – when you absorb new ideas and insights from reading, when you implement those as an experiment, and then gain feedback and spend the time to reflect, you are practicing in the next level. Because of the higher level of consciousness involved.
The true power of the 3-hour rule is the improvement rate. It makes your 10,000 hours equivalent to someone else’s 30,000 hours. To maximize this simple principle, implement this with like-minded people by forming a mastermind group.

Workout routine-Hypertrophy to Crossfit/strength training.
I am writing here today to hopefully contribute some knowledge to my new workout routine. Having spent many years experimenting with various workouts, diets and sporting activities I have come to the conclusion that the most effective use of my time in the gym is strength training (5x5 Stronglift). As of late I have decided that I would like to start adding some mass so that I may use the added muscle platform to improve strength and conditioning later on. I will start by switching over to Hypertrophy training, by Hypertrophy I am referring to 10x4 with lesser weight. I intend on sticking to this training regime for 4/6 weeks and then when I have the appropriate amount of muscle mass I will revert to a Crossfit/Strength training type regime.
Diet. -My diet is relatively clean at the moment. On average I eat: Breakfast: 4 boiled eggs (7g protein each), Porridge+ Banana+ Honey Lunch: Tin of tuna on sandwich with Spinach+ Apple.(32g protein) Dinner: a mixture of Cous Cous+ Broccoli+3 sausages (roughly 10 g protein each) tinned mixed veg+ spinach and Jalapenos. +1 Protein shake a day. (60g protein)
Training Regime -My Training Regime is split between lower and upper body with a high intensity kettlebell/core workout Mid-week: MON-(Lower) • Squats (4x12) • Leg Press (4x12) • Leg extension (4x12) • Deadlifts (4x12) • Heel raises (4x12) • Lunges (4x12) WED-(Strength) • 10 mins Skipping (warm up) • 30 press ups • 10 box jumps • 20 Body weight squats (x4)
Kettlebell Workout -The kettlebell workout consists of 1 minute of a particular exercise followed by the next exercise immediately until all exercises are complete.
Good mornings Windmills Swing Lunges One arm high pull One arms squat Turkish get-up One arm row Around the body wing.
FRI-(Upper)
Front Press (4x12) Lateral Raises (4x12) Bench Press (4x12) Upright Rows (4x12) Bent over Row (4x12) Dips (4x12) Cable Curls (4x12) Cable Triceps extensions (4x12)
As mentioned previously, I hope to progress with this exercise routine for up to 4/6 weeks and then continue with a Stronglift/ Crossfit workout
My aim is to increase muscle mass in the hypertrophy stage for an increase in muscle mass for the switch to secondary stage of the training.
Any help or advise on die or routine would be greatly appreciated.

If you are typing like i did, fumbling with 6 fingers and having to first look at the keyboard, then at the text you typed, you know how tedious typing a lot of text can be, especially if your job regularly requires you to.
When you learn touch typing, not only will you initially double your speed and keep improving it, but typing becomes like talking: you don't have to think about it, you can look at the screen, read from a document, or wink at your sexy coworker while doing it.
There are a couple of free sites that teach touch typing, I personally recommend http://ift.tt/W4wfgH . It has 15 lessons, each lasts literally 10 minutes, so by doing one lesson a day you can learn this insanely useful skill in two weeks (i recommend doing the last few lessons for one more week to really get it down). By the way, the site has lessons in every language and every keyboard layout.

[EMSK] Identifying important information about a stroke
I learnt about this in my degree and was surprised how easy it was to learn how to take note of a few things that could be really useful in aiding someone suffering from a stroke With strokes time is of the essence, and if you can identify important characteristics of the stroke and be able to tell them to the doctor it may save vital time and make a difference.
The types of strokes: Ischaemic stroke: Loss of blood supply to the brain, often caused by a blockage in the arteries of the brain. About 80% of strokes are of this kind.
Haemorrhagic stroke: Bleeding from an artery in the brain. About 20% of strokes are of this kind. This type of stroke is more deadly than an Ischaemic stroke.
Transient Ischaemic attack: These last less than 24hours and are due to temporary loss of blood supply
Identifying important symptoms: Identifying symptoms of the stroke is useful for the doctors, as they help discern in what area of the brain the stroke has taken place. Immediately providing some information about the stroke may be useful as time is of the essence when treating strokes.
Enquire if there was a sharp pain at the time of the stroke, as this may indicate the stroke was Haemorrhagic
Note if there are problems with breathing, balance and co-ordination, chewing swallowing could indicate it took place in the brainstem
Check if the person has dizziness, nausea, headaches, balance and co-ordination issues or vomiting as these could indicate it took place in the cerebellum
Check if the person has numbness or weakness, numbness could indicate it took place in the somatosensory cortex, weakness indicates it could have taken place in the motor cortex. Note which side of the body these effects are on, as this indicates the side of the brain the stroke occurred on
Check if the person has trouble producing or understanding speech, this could indicate damage to Brocas area and/or Wernicke’s area.
See if the person has trouble with sight, this could indicate damage to the occipital lobe
Important things to do: Find out, if you can, what medications the person was on, as this may have implications for treatment

Mike Isreatel, RP, MRV concept for Strength
I have seen Mike discuss the hypertrophy concept using the MRV overload principle in some detail but only briefly I’ve seen the strength concept. I’m hoping somebody/ies can share how they have programed using the MRV principle for strength.
Myself I set up a RTS styled template (~12 slots – 6 Pressing + 3 Squat + 3 Deadlift), using a sq and bench slot as examples. First Micro was ramping up to find MRV. Also I wanted to work in number of lifts (NOL) if I started failing reps in sets to maintain volume (training goal was set with reps i.e. 4x5=20 reps) otherwise volume would drop and I wonder if MRV would be reached.
BE 4x5
M1
WK1 4x5x105
WK2 4x5x107.5
Wk3 4x5x110 @ RPE10 (Possibly MRV)
WK 4 DeLD
M2 Wk5 4x5x110 (felt OK)
WK6 4x5x112.5 @RPE10
WK7 4.4.4.3.2.2.1,x115 (is this MRV, probably not for MRV I should expect a larger delta of reps reduction due to fatigue??)
WK8 DeLD
M3
Wk9 4x5x111 (think I missed this session)
WK10 5,5,5,4,1x111 @RPE10 (thinking I’m passed MRV)
WK11 5,5,5,4,1 x115 (better than M2)
So I was a bit lost upon the final weeks in the micro’s but think I found my MRV. On my next run I’ll use 115kg as a MRV bench mark.
SQ
M1
WK1 3x5x170
WK2 3x5x177.5
Wk3 3x5x185
WK 4 DeLD
M2
Wk5 3x5x190
WK6 5,5,4,1x195
WK7 3x5x200 WK8 DeLD
M3
Wk9 3x5x195
WK10 5,5,4,1x197.5
WK11 5,5,5,4,1 x205
I could have done with another micro using this data. I guess you end up through the MICRO like:
Wk1: MEV - Min Eff Vol,
WK2:MAV - Max adaptive Vol
WK3; MRV – max recoverable volume
WK4; DeLDF,
Is this the correct rout that Mike intends? Any thoughts are welcome?

Is the creatine phosphate (PCr) a global or a local stored energy system?
As the title says, is it stored globally in the entire body or is it stored more locally in each muscle? Say Im training bench and rowing. Would me doing quick, heavy, sets of only a few reps of bench empty my stored PCr in the pecs or will it also affect the back muscles involved in the rowing?
Kind of hard to formulate it well, hopefully you get what Im trying to say.
EMSK: Life Advice: What can I start doing now that will help me a lot in five years?
-
Don’t have that extra slice of pizza, you’ve had enough to eat already – you will regret it.
-
You don’t need that new TV, and you certainly shouldn’t put that on a store payment plan – by the time you’ve paid it off in 3 years you could have bought another television with the interest you paid out. Besides the TV you have right now is fine.
-
Do keep your living expenses low, like a business you want to have good cash flow and low operating costs. Ideally keep your expenses below 40% of income (after tax)
-
You don’t need that new car – sure the sticker price says $19,997 on the windscreen but by the time the salesperson is done with you, somehow you are now paying $47, 897 @ 5.01 % interest over 8 years. Meanwhile your neighbor is selling a perfectly good 2006 Ford Escape for $3.5k AND it has winter tires on it – you idiot.
-
You should do some push ups – like right now, do it……I’ll wait….
yeah I bet that was hard eh? now keep doing that everyday. Mix it up and throw in some situps now and again.
-
Live small – you don’t need that 5 bedroom house with 3.5 bathrooms and a sunroom. You’ll end up working yourself to death to pay for it, spending untold money to heat and cool the multitude of rooms you’ll maybe spend 5% of your time in. Seriously when was the last time you just chilled in your front family room for more then 20 minutes.
-
Learn a new skill, it could be anything but start now and in 5 years you’ll be pretty damned good at it.
-
Don’t burn bridges, you never know when you’ll need to use them to reach safety.
-
Invest in a good mattress. You’re going to spend close to 1/3 of your life sleeping – doesn’t it make sense to get the best possible mattress? Some people will spend 2K on a nice looking bedroom furniture set and then cheap out on the mattress. This is insanity.

Stop it with the sugar. Seriously. I personally did an experiment were I didn’t have any sugar (pop, excess fruits, sugar in coffee etc) for 40 days without changing anything else in my lifestyle. I lost 12 pounds in 40 days from just cutting out sugar.
NOTE: Diet pops or artificial sweeteners doesn’t count – studies are creeping up that show that your body doesn’t know the difference and still gives you insulin spikes.

Pain in left forearm when lifting
I started lifting weights mid October last year. At first I had the typical pain in my forearms when curling that I've heard is common for beginners. However it went away fairly quickly.
I kept going to the gym about 5 times a week for a month. Then I started to feel a pain in my left forearm when doing biceps exercises. It only got worse and worse, until it stopped me from doing other exercises such as bench press, which isn't even that heavy on the forearms compared to curls. I tried stretching and some forearm exercises before it got really bad, but it didn't help.
So I took a 1 month and a half break from the gym completely, until last week when I stared again. When it was biceps day, I went to do some curls - and I felt it immediately. Not as bad as before, but the same kind of pain as in the early stage of my problem before. Only in the left forearm!
Any idea what it could be and what could be done?

Optimal caloric surplus for strength gain
So over christmas (or more or less the whole of december and still going) I stopped watching my diet and ate whatever I wanted. I've seen crazy consistent strength gains like I'm a newbie again. I would guess that I've been fairly consistently in a 800-1000 surplus.
What do you think is the maximum surplus before gains can be made no faster? Assuming that a small surplus (250-500) will yield small results and a bigger one will yield more. Obviously there are so many variables but I'm wondering if there would be any difference between, say, a 1000 surplus and a 3000 surplus?

[EMSK] How to Write a Basic Resume
I had a search through EMSK and didn't find any concrete (read: practical and useful) guidance on this, so I thought I'd put together a basic guide based on what I've learned on both sides of the desk when it comes to job applications. I'm also happy to do more of these if anyone is interested.
I'm also going to tailor it, where possible, for two different groups:
-
People that have an established career and work history.
-
People that are new to the workforce (e.g. high school or college graduates).
1) Thoroughly read and understand the job advertisement / description and what it is asking you to do.
This is a very basic screening technique, and you'd be amazed how many people get bounced from consideration for not following basic instructions, typically:
-
Please submit a current resume and cover letter. Happens all the time - people submit one, or the other.
-
Please submit a resume and cover letter in (whatever format - .doc, PDF). Again, a simple instruction, which a lot of people fail by sending through things in odd formats.
-
Please submit a resume with professional references. Another simple one, which people screw up all the time by putting "references available on request".
2) Format, font, style.
Resumes are professional documents - they represent and market you as an employee to a business, so opting for conservative and professional is what you're after.
There is no 100% correct "prescribed" font, as long as it looks consistent - e.g. having part of it in Arial and part of it in Times New Roman looks lazy or copied and pasted. Pick something reasonable and stick with it.
Obviously, avoid any cutesy / fun / joke fonts - Comic Sans, Papyrus, WordArt - it's a professional document, not a church newsletter. Ditto for bullets and lists - just use standard bullets and tabs - nobody wants to see your educational awards indicated by Hello Kitty emojis.
Don't fuck around too much with margins or paper size or anything like that. If the person at the other end tries to print your resume off, and it won't print because it's in a wacky Zimbabwean paper size, they're just going to move on.
- Stick to black and white. Chances are, if printed or faxed, this is what it's going to come out as anyway, and colour turns up shit in b+w or greyscale.
3) Length and Content
1-2 pages for a resume, 1 page for a cover letter.
If you're new to the workforce, a single-page resume is fine. Don't be tempted to pad it out with irrelevant shit and 1.5 line spacing just to make up 2 pages.
If you're established, avoid the natural inclination to document every single thing you've done in the last five years and end up with five pages of shit.
General guidelines - new to the workforce:
-
If you have no work experience, activities connected to your academic studies and extracurricular are fine. The classic examples are internships, work experience, volunteer work and vocational classes. You lay these out the same way you would work experience (when you did it and what you did).
-
These can also be supported by social things - e.g. being on a sports team can help demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills. However, don't fill it up with irrelevant shit - they're supporting activities, and nobody gives two shits that you got MVP in an Under 10s cricket game.
-
If you have some work experience (e.g. retail or fast food), obviously that comes first. List your employer, position, time employed and main responsibilities. Don't overdo it. Cash handling, food safety, customer service is fine. Don't say that you "provided excellent customer service while maintaining a high standard of health and safety in a commercial kitchen environment while providing cost-savings to management by reducing shrinkage and enhancing time management" for a burger flipping job at McDonalds.
-
At this point I wouldn't bother detailing reasons for leaving, but if you really feel compelled to, just put "left to concentrate on my further studies" or something to that effect - nobody is going to fault you for leaving McDonald's to study for exams so you never have to work at McDonald's ever fucking again.
General guidelines - established career:
At this point for most people, your work experience is going to be your most marketable skill, and far more recent than anything you did at college.
Work history should be laid out by your most recent or current position, including:
-
Name and location of employer.
-
Your position and department (note - should be the last position you held, so even if you were Senior Account Manager for a month, and Junior Account Manager for most of it, put Senior).
-
Time in role (e.g. August 2013-November 2015). For the older jobs, you can play around a bit / guestimate the dates because nobody really gives a shit what you did three jobs and five years ago.
-
Your main responsibilities. Should be pretty much a summary of what is in your position description. If you can't remember, google the role, find a similar advertisement and use it. Don't go overboard - you need to keep the length down, especially when you get to the 5-10 year mark in your career and you've had a few different jobs.
-
Add any particular accomplishments e.g. "recognised by management for excellent leadership", or "fulfilled all financial and safety KPIs for the years 2012-2014". Again, don't go nuts.
-
Reason for leaving. Keep it positive, or at best, minimalist and understandable. Something like "offered and accepted position at ABC Widgets" or "promoted and offered relocation to the Sydney HQ office" are the best ones, obviously. "Left to pursue further studies and professional development" is a good one if you left on shitty terms with a place.
-
Anything that is older than 5-10 years, or not strictly relevant to the job you're applying for, just put it in under a bullet list like "additional and supporting work experience". Nobody gives a fuck that your 32 year old self worked at KFC as a pimply teenager.
4) References
References, wherever possible, should be professional people that can vouch for your attitude, skills and performance. Obviously this is going to be very different for existing workers vs. people studying or recent graduates, but there's a few commonalities:
-
No family members. I don't give a shit that your mom thinks you're awesome. If you're new to the workforce and you did work experience for your dad's company, ask someone else at the company to give a reference. Nothing looks worse (and this happens with 30 year olds), when Tim Johnson Jr's referee is Tim Johnson Snr - believe me, it fucking happens.
-
Contact details need to be current. If you give me a number that goes through disconnected, I'm not going to waste time calling you to get the right number. I'll move on to the next candidate.
-
No wacky email addresses. Jesus, fuck - people just don't get this. Obviously, a work email is the best, e.g. j.smith@abccorp.com, or jsmith@school.edu. If you have to give a personal one, for the love of God get a normal one like johnsmith@gmail.com, not hotbrony6969_xxx@hotmail.com.
-
References need to include: name, position, company, email, phone (direct and mobile if available).
-
If you don't have their direct extension, google the company and just put their main switchboard number in.
-
Don't even bother with written references, unless it's on NASA letterhead and says that Neil Armstrong sucked your cock while they gave you the Medal of Honour - they expire too quickly.
Reference guidelines: new to workforce.
Obviously the hurdle here is "how can I give employer references when I haven't had an employer?", and the simple answer is, you can't - unless you've worked.
The best one to give is someone in a decent position that can vouch for you - a teacher / lecturer, someone from an intern or WP program, school administrator, student supervisor, something like that. BUT, there's a caveat - don't expect a maths teacher or a psych professor with 1,000 students in the past year or two to remember who the hell you are / were.
For graduates, this is where tutors and supervisors come in handy because they've worked with you on major projects a lot more closely.
Out of high school, a reference from a teacher or something, and a personal reference from something else (e.g. sport coach) would be more than enough.
Reference Guidelines - Established
Obviously, your current and / or most recent employer is who we want to talk to. If you can put your current reporting manager, that's easiest; however, a lot of people don't want their boss to know that they're looking for another job.
Easiest workaround is to find someone in another dep't that you've worked for that can give the same information without tipping the hat to your boss. Another good way is to give a company reference and a Client / Customer reference - we get the same information, while minimising how many people at your current work that we contact.
This also works in certain companies that do not, as policy, give full references. My company, for example, will confirm that I worked here in x position for y time and was responsible for z, but we're not allowed to elaborate further than that. A Client or Customer reference is a great workaround to this increasingly common issue - as is giving personal details as an alternative.
- Somebody three jobs and five years ago? Don't even bother.
