EMSKR: What to do to help foreign countries experiencing terrorist attacks?

As a United States civilian, it seems that there is little that one person can do to help overseas. Red Cross and the like seem to have shady aid records and scandals. What are some productive ways for individual people to provide aid to other countries going through what seems to be near-daily bombings? I don't know if donated blood goes overseas or what else could possibly provide aid, but I would like to find some way to reach out other than just throwing money at a corporation who promises to try to help.

Once a week weight training routine?

Hi everyone! Transitioning right now from marathon training to combined weight training and cardio. My main plan is to complete a Beachbody program (i.e. p90x3) at home; however, on Wednesdays I'll have an awkward hour after work and before a writing class where it doesn't make sense to go home. Since I wont be able to stream the Beachbody program in my office gym, I thought I would incorporate a straightforward full body weight routine. Does anyone have suggestions for such a once-a-week routine? I realize generally once a week isn't going to do much, but keep in mind that p90x will also incorporate some weights, but nothing as heavy as I might do in the gym. I was an olympic weightlifter in highschool so I'm not afraid to lift big, and know good form. Also, I'm female, 138lbs, 5'5" looking to lose 10 lbs (or perhaps lose 10 and gain 5 in muscle). Suggestions greatly appreciated!

EMSK: How to Master Any Skill

http://ift.tt/1SbNnfA

Looking for shoulder pain advice

I've lifted weights pretty consistently for a while now. A couple years ago I started feeling minor aches and pain in my right shoulder during workouts. I started stretching my shoulders more and doing rotator cuff warm ups before any upper body workouts, and that helped a lot, but I would still occasionally get mild shoulder pain during workouts and I would just tone it down a bit and I'd usually be fine by my next workout. Anyway, about a week ago, I was on the bench and I was lifting the weight off the rack without a spotter, and since I was pushing the weight up from over my face instead of over my chest, my shoulders were in an awkward position and I heard my right shoulder pop, but I was able to continue with the lift. Since that pop, my shoulder pain has been a little more consistent and a little worse, and last night I must've slept on it weird because I woke up this morning and the pain was worse than ever even though I haven't lifted in about 3 days. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get my shoulder back to 100%? Any particular stretches or warmups I should be doing? Should I still be going to the gym and just doing super light weight and super high reps? Should I just take a week off upper body lifts?

I posted to /r/fitness and got deleted because they don't allow questions about medical advice on that subreddit. I hope that's not the case here. I know to take advice from strangers on the Internet with a grain of salt. My discomfort level is not high enough yet for me to feel the need to see a doctor, so I just wanna hear if anyone else has experienced anything similar and did anything that worked for them.

Is Your Low Rep Routine Burning You out?

Within the last couple of weeks I made the decision to switch up my long-running routine consisting of low-rep sets.  The older and more seasoned I get in my lifting, the easier it is to make this decision.  Most of my routines have always focused on low reps with high intensity for maximal strength gains.  With strength always being my focal point, why the sudden change?

Simply put, my mind and body needed a break.  High-intensity workouts are excellent for strength building but are incredibly demanding!  I was beginning to skip workouts here and there due to being tired from work. Wait, did he just say he skipped workouts?!  He can’t say that, he writes for a fitness blog!  Yes, I did say that!  I’m also a real person just like you!  I told you, the struggle is real for all of us and no one is exempt!

Working long hours, performing a physical job can take its toll on you, and negatively impact your high intensity training.  So instead of just giving up, I altered my routine.  Even if you don’t work a physical job, it is still quite possible to burn out from low rep, high intensity workout programs!  Your body needs a break! Defy Your Age: Maintaining Your Muscle Mass

It is never too late and you’re never too old to strive for a healthier, stronger you.  If you’re an older gal or fellow and you’ve never participated in fitness when you were younger, you can rest assured knowing that it isn’t too late to begin now!  If you’re finally fed up with being tired and feeling weak, take this time to focus on building a stronger and healthier body!

While studies have shown men start to lose 3% to 5% of their muscle mass per decade after the age of 30, this process can be reversed or at best, slowed down with a proper strength training program set in place.  Remember, this isn’t just about vanity, this is about your health and well-being.  As we grow older, weaker, and frail due to lack of activity, we place ourselves in higher risk of injury.

Okay, so you’re interested in getting in better shape but maybe you’re overwhelmed and not sure where to begin.  First things first, don’t kill yourself!  There’s no shame in starting small, allowing your body and muscles to adjust to this new activity!  If you’ve been inactive for a long time, this is going to come as a shock to your body, so take it easy! Muscle imbalance - spine issues

Hi,

So for over a year I did a specific exercise and it was for my back. Recently an x-ray shows my thoracic spine leaning more to one side but the doctor is saying this is just something I had for a while. However, I know my history and I know I did my back exercise using mostly my left back muscle and so I think it has gradually pulled my spine toward that direction away from weaker side.

Does this make any sense though or is it likely something I developed growing up? If it is actually a muscle imbalance with a stronger left upper back... how can I bring balance?

Thank you

Alternative Linear Progression for Strength Training

Hey guys, Been wondering about this for a while now and I hope someone can give me some insight into this question, which is about linear progression and strength training. Most of the linear progression strength training programs I see call for small increments of either 1.25kg (0.625kg on each side, micro-loading) or 2.5kg (1.25kg on each side). Imagine now that my gym doesn't have plates of 0.625kg or 1.25kg, only 2.5kg or more. This means that the smallest increment is 5kg. This can become quite taxing and the form can suffer a lot, when doing a 5x5 program with straight sets. How would you progress linearly this way, while minimizing the need to deload? I've though about doing more sets of 5, but this can be really hard after 5 heavy sets. I've also though about working with a rep range of 4-6 and only jump when I hit all 6 reps. Although, the math doesn't quite add up when considering the total volume. Hoping someone can share some tips! Thanks

3-day split without barbell

I am 17 years old, 144lbs and I just moved to a community that has a gym. I don't have the money for a gym membership by myself and my parents say its too expensive and the gym in my community is fine. The problem is, the gym does not have a barbell set. Everywhere I look, all of the programs say that I need to deadlift, squat, etc., but I just cant do that where I'm at now.

I wrote down all the equipment that I have at my disposal, and I'm asking whats the best workout that I can do in a 3-day split to lose weight, as well as put on some muscle and eventually reach my goal of having a 6-pack. I am really determined and when I set my mind to something, I achieve it. The problem is I don't know much about these machines and setting a good workout plan for myself, which is where you come in.

I'm studying for a white collar career path but I've never shied away from fixing something myself. Obviously bigger repairs or projects, I don't want to just go off of youtube videos.

What resources are out there to learn a trade skill if it's not for career prospects?

Where to start?

So this is a little embarrassing for myself, especially with what I remember of myself. During my late teens I was obsessed with Strength and Conditioning, I was practicing parkour at the time and took was using West Side for Skinny Bastards to improve myself.

Fast forward to now and college years of beer and micro pizza combined with not exercising in about years has left me skinny-fat and weak.

I'm currently 97kg(213lbs) with 23-25% bodyfat. This morning I hit a great max set of 6 push ups, 0 pull ups and 2 very questionable chin ups. I also cannot for the life of me run longer than a few seconds.

With my sad, sad weakness and appalling body condition I was wondering where you guys would recommend starting.

The fat is what annoys me the most, so I feel cutting first is the right thing to do for my confidence levels. But my question is really how would you recommend cutting?

Should I do body weight work or should I do starting strength? Is it possible to combine them, because I'd like to increase my lifts but also increase what I can do with my own body weight.

My goals aren't be a powerlifter or a bodybuilder, what I want is an overall above average level of fitness. I want to be able to lift a respectable amount, but also able to mountain bike and hike. I want to be the guy who's body can just do things if that makes sense. But I'd really, really like to bring down the bodyfat as well.

So for someone with no strength, no cardio and a skinny fat body, where would you start?

Any diet tips would also be appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance if you took the time to read this and reply.

EMSKR: I'm afraid of heights. How do I handle climbing a ladder?

Simply put, I'm afraid of heights when I don't feel safe (so I'm fine in an airplane, but not on a roof with a low/no wall in front of me looking down). I'm assuming that's pretty normal but in my case I freeze and panic.

Lately I've had this happen twice: once, I needed to climb on top of the roof with a ladder, and the second time I have to change all the spot lights on my ceiling.

The first time I froze half way up and just fucked back down.

Second time, letting go and working with one arm was fine, but I had to wrestle with myself to let go both arms from the ladder in order to work (couldn't manage with one hand) and right after changing one spotlight I couldn't handle the stress and walked back down. This was just three rungs up, so I'm not even talking that high up (thankfully I'm quite tall myself).

Both times, my partner was holding the ladder, but I feel like in the first case it was a case of not feeling convinced the ladder is safe (it was buckling a little as I went up) and in the second case I feel like I'm not properly balanced when I'm just standing on the rung and at any time my foot will slip or I will lose my balance on the rung and fall back.

Are there any tips or tricks to help me with this? I need to be able to climb a ladder and work in my own home. I need to overcome this, one way or another.

Thanks in advance, guys.

EMSK: Proper Feet hygiene

Good Day my bearded woodchopping epitomes of manliness.

lets talk about feet hygiene and why the fuck every man should know about that. I was a paramedic at a military unit. i wan't to talk about feet hygiene because of the fucking bullshit i heard from some guys there. beforehand i wan't to say that callus on your feet just show how much of a lazy pussy you are. Nobody should have callus cause, they are a pain in the ass, can tear off and cause diseases.

Once i heard from a guy, that he hikes and walks much and those prevent blisters but thats utterly bullshit, you get more friction from those and therefore more blisters.

So what can you do against callus?
just take a fricking Pumice stone once in a while And use a callus rasp if they are already there

But wait there is more:

  1. if you shower, wash your fucking feet too, not just hope that the water that drops down on your feet do the job.
  2. Nailclipping: Cut the toenail straight and not in a curvy way. let them be long enough to stand a little out . You should never cut them to the skin or even shorter, cause thats the way you get a ingrown nail and that's something you don't want to have.

So thats all i've to say right now.

i know the most of you know that already. but unfortunately not everyone.

EMSKR: How to bring the party

My mate and his college buddies are renting a house on the coast for spring break. I don't know any of these people. I'm bailing on Cabo San Lucas to hit this joint, so this shit better be popping and I have no faith in my friend or his college bros.

I have already ordered a morph suit and prepared a shitfaced drunk playlist. What else can I do?

EMSK: After having moved a fridge, don't plug it in right away - especially if it wasn't upright at some point.

Just had a nice learning experience after renting a truck, laying my fridge sideways and taking it across town. The oil starts moving out of the compressor in the process of being moved and when you plug it in, can strain the motor...

EMSKR: How to find a mechanic you can trust

Hey guys I'm looking for some advice on how to find a mechanic you can trust. For those of us who doesn't have a garage to work in, or those who may not know how to perform repairs on their own.

How does one go about finding a reputable mechanic (besides the Internet obviously) who you can trust to not only perform quality work but to give you a fair price? What are some things to look for if any?

Thanks in advance!

EMSKR: Compare engine size (liter/cubic inches) as it relates to cylinders, gear ratio, and overall power per gallon of gas used?

I know the title is a mouthful, but I wanted each variant listed. As I feel all are going to be important when looking for a new car. I know that most racing cars are 4 cylinders. However, my v6 seems to take off and run better than any v4. One example that led me to this question. I've read that a lot of consumers want to own a Mustang (or Camero) and they buy the v4. They feel great that they now own their beloved car. They later find out theirs is the bottom of the line when it comes to engine performance and "Tim the Tool Man" power.

My wife has owned 2 v4 and both seem to stutter off the starting block compared to both of my last 2 that have both been v6. I know there are v4 that are way more powerful.

My cars current specs

These are 4 cylinder monsters

How do I compare them?

Chest - Turning a weakness into strength

Whats up guys. I recently jumped right back into strength training after about 3-4 months of hypertrophy and am looking for some input on my bench press. To give you an idea of where I'm at, I am about 185lbs w/ a starting 1RM of 205lbs. I have a short but successful background with 3/5/1 but my chest is just slow. I'm not too worried about my other lifts but I am currently doing 3/5/1 for all my main lifts with a 4 day split. S: chest, M: DL, W: MP, Th: Squat. I would like to focus more of my strength training around chest but I am unsure of how I can go about doing this with the program I am doing now. I know what some of you will say about 5/3/1 but I'm ready for what you have to say. Would it be better if I did chest press twice a week? Should I just change my routine all-together? Any input would be much appreciated.

EMSKR: How to reject someone gracefully

Most guys (ok, ALL guys) have been rejected at one point or another in their life, and for the most part, I have no trouble handling this. However, I realized after going on a second tepid date with a girl this evening that I don't really know how to reject someone gracefully. Do I not contact her again and hope that she catches on? Should I let her know that I'm not interested romantically?

This request is geared specifically towards dating etiquette rather than rejecting the advances of an interested female acquaintance, though please feel free to weigh in however you can.

Strength Routine

So i'm trying to get in better shape by using strength training and am having difficulty settling on one. I've trained in several martial arts for the past 7 years but have always felt that I couldn't get to the next level performance wise because I was very weak. I've been in the gym moving weights for 10 years on and off also but I've stuck with a classic bodybuilder super high rep countless sets scheme that ended up making me look more like a puffy cloud than a trained athlete with dense muscle. I've since lost a lot of weight and muscle because I got really sick for a while, pro:puffy cloud muscle is now gone. Now that I'm good I won't be making the same mistake and instead try strength training. I've tried Stronglifts 5x5 for 2 months (because it was most popular) and have seen very little strength gains. Also, I'm interested in only strength and athletic performance not aesthetics. So my two basic questions are:

  1. Any routine you might recommend that is leg focused (for my martial arts)

  2. Will training for strength prevent me from continuing my endurance training? I like to go out for 3 mile runs everyday and finish off with sprints every other day.

Sorry for the long post, I'm new in this forum and a beginner in strength training and wanted to cover all the bases.
