Hello, I've created a small site which was initially created for my personal use and lately I've decided to make it public. This website generates a Tabata (intervals for 4 minutes) workout (based on the equipment you've selected), and then allows you to execute it with a synchronized timer. EMSKR: How to not waste your youth

Hey, so i feel like writing something like this would give me some sort of solace.

Background of me : 17, pretty introverted, depressed, currently in highschool, athletic, exams next year, close to no friends, looking for a job for the summer break, girls' are not an issue however.

I feel so lost. I don't have any hobbies, i hate staying in on weekends. My only close male friend, is going out with other friends, not even inviting me (i wouldnt go anyway tbh), getting high, concerts etc. I'm trying to fix my GPA to be 4+ so i could go into a good college later. But i feel so empty, i cant focus on learning more french or coding or do more art which are things i'd like to do. I hate that i have no close friends and i feel like i'm gonna be so alone after high school ends. I fucking hate that. I'd want to have a car license, but i dont have any motivation whatsoever to start doing the license. I have a secure place to go back to for a summer job in my countryhome where i can live with my grandparents, but i dont like them, or the job (old colleagues, shitty pay, 6am starts work) and i feel like i could be doing something more in my life than just idle by. I feel as if im wasting my youth.

I don't know where to go or what to do in order to tip the domino effect in my favor.

I guess what i'm asking is, any kind of advice for someone in my situation.

EMSK: What to do in the event of a tornado.

Most mid-westerners relearn this information every year, but given the high threat of tornadoes today I figure it bears repeating. Also, it's important to note that tornadoes can occur anywhere and any time of year, just as long as the atmospheric conditions are right.

The best place to be in the event of a tornado is in a basement or storm shelter away from any windows. If you do not have access to a basement, move to the ground floor at the center of your house. Basically, put as many walls between yourself and outside.

If you are caught outside, find a ditch and cover your head and neck as best as you can. Under no circumstances should you try to find an overpass to hide under.

Building aesthetics as an athlete?

Hi I was wondering if anyone here could steer me in the right direction... I'm an 18 year old female lacrosse player (will be playing D1 starting this fall) and I currently am 5'6, weigh 140 lbs, do strength and conditioning 4x a week with a coach (on top of lacrosse practice), and am very focused on my diet. I am athletic and feel like I am doing most of the right things and I am performing pretty well, but I am frustrated with the way that I look. I am by no means fat, but I have very little visible muscle tone. I just look kind of solid/slightly above average in size. For the past year or so, I assumed that I was probably eating too many calories, so I cut back to around 1800 a day a developed female athlete triad. But even with this low of calories and lifting I still looked kind of chubby. I got diagnosed in January and have since been eating around 2500 cals a day. I have improved on everything performance wise (lifts, sprint times, etc..) but I look slightly bigger now than I did before (I have gained 5 lbs). I do not feel the need to look like a bodybuilder or fitness model, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't want some lean muscle tone (especially for the amount of time I spend working out and for how obsessive I am counting calories). I know performance needs to be my #1 goal and that training for aesthetic purposes differ from training for athletic purposes, but I feel like there is some middle ground that I am missing. I would love any input!! Thank you so much for your time.

How to regain hand strength

Hi there,

I'm a lady with fibromyalgia and have had wrist/joint and lack of strength in my hands/fingers. Because of my condition worsening the last five years I've lost most of my muscle/strength in my body. But even when I was in good shape always felt like I was struggling. I'm hoping to go into computer repair and often find myself struggling trying to seat components, even undo screws and just having general hand issues. I would like to work on this. Are there any good finger/hand exercises that could help strengthen things? Or do I need to work out other muscles to help with this?

Also if anyone has tips for working your upper arms without using dumb bells/weights that would be great. My wrists get pretty painful. (Maybe like strapping on a weight or something instead?)

EMSKR: How do I reach these keeeds!?

In all seriousness though I can't for the life of me figure out how to get respect or any amount of seriousness out of the high school team I coach. I'll explain. This team has never really had a long term coach, as in more than a few months or close to a season. I would love to do this, but it is so tiring their attitude. Some of the individuals are good. They have had a difficult past, coming from a past team that was way lax and didn't really put much of any motivation or effort into anything beyond joking around. The last generation of the team was better but they come from a school where the kids are pushed to do everything and don't have time for anything as a result, if that makes sense.

The issue I have stems from two freshman who bring the rest of the team down to their level. Actively going out of their way to make me uncomfortable or piss me off. Even if they are trying to be serious for a moment. Unfortunately they are two of the more active and successful kids on the team and I can't just punish them by preventing them from competing. Another kid is the same way but only participates because his dad forces him to, although I doubt he would have any motivation if he was allowed to choose his sport.

This was my first full year with the team and I have some ideas on what I should change for next year lesson plan wise. They can get away without being the most athletic so I'd like to set aside some time to workout, if possible(it failed in the past due to their lack of any motivation and interest in screwing around).

What I am at a loss for is: how do I go about getting respect from them, since apparently they have none for me already, and motivate them. I foolishly started out trying to go from nothing to top tier in one year, and it failed. I'm will to set aside immediate success for building the quality team that I see others have achieved. I also don't really know how to do that since it's not exactly the most popular sport. I just realized I didn't say what sport it is; I coach sailing.

What should be my max weights for 5x5?

I'm 5'9 and apporximately 160lbs (flucutate from 155-165). Current 5x5 lifts as of today:

  • Squat - 215lbs - very heavy for me but maintaining form I don't know if I'll be able to go much higher here without deloading
  • OHP - 100lbs - failed on the 4th rep today on the 4th and 5th set
  • Deadlift - 245lbs - still easy I have 1RM maxed at 405lbs in the past
  • Bench - 135lbs - this weight is still relatively easy but I have never been a strong bench presser due to Ulnar Nerve Displacement, same goes with OHP
  • Bent Over Row - 125lbs; I only do 3x5 with these because I also do 3x5 Cleans directly afterwards with the same weight as BOR.

EMSK how to build the perfect resume for a specific job.

Onet Online

As part of my out processing classes in the Army, I was taught how to create a resume that will land you the job you want. I've used this technique to get the job I have now, and was way under qualified for, and have seen success when friends have used it as well under my guidance.

Basically, Onet Online is a database of almost every job you can name and the skills and qualifications generally required for that position. Search for the job title you want and pick out the one that most closely resembles what you're applying for. Go to the Details section of the report and copy all of the individual bullet points that apply to you personally.

If you have a long work history and are putting together a chronological resume, paste in those same bullet points into each job where they may have applied, rewording as necessary to show that you did those things. If you do not have a significant work history, put together a Skills Based Resume and paste in the relevant bullet points under the appropriate subsections rewording as necessary.

Just as an example, I learned excellent discipline, leadership, and time management skills in the military. I was in the medical field in the Army but used a skills based resume to land a compliance analyst job five years ago; it was the first job I applied for after leaving the Army. The Army was my only previous employment and I did not have any sort of a degree. I've since been promoted three times and no longer have to do the job that got me in the door to this company.

Hey guys,

So I have been doing SL for the past 12 weeks or so and have been doing well and liking it a lot. Last week I took the week off from lifting. Now after going back for the first day this week I am extremely sore, specifically in my quads. I deloaded the weight by 10% as the program says. But still ended up really sore. EMSK: "No matter how much you shake and dance...

The last drop always goes in your pants."

If you are unaware of what this little rhyme is referring to, think back on all the times you have urinated. After draining the dragon, you usually attempt to shake out any remnants of dribble, but Alas! The front of your trousers shows a drop of defiance against your incessant dancing.

It never fails, but there are ways to disguise this possibly embarrassing result of our blessed anatomy, and I use a couple quite often. First, there are many pants that are made with a material to counter this issue by being somewhat resistant to staining. Wear these when possible. Otherwise, upon seeing the spot of rebellion, I will wash my hands and then splash the water into the sink in an obviously careless manner. This will throw several other spots around the tinkle-dribblet to disguise it and provide you with an infallible alibi.

Please share your strategies of defeating this problem or hiding its outcome!

EMSKR: Employer-Employee Dynamic?

I was thinking of taking a sick day -- I'm not actually sick, but could use a day off and I have more sick days than I'm likely to ever use. I know this is a very common, if unspoken, thing to do, but my first urge is to play the 'oh god my stomach, ooooh it hurts!' card, and I feel guilty about it.

Got me thinking. What should a man expect of his employer? How common is the sick-day-but-not-really thing? Am I under moral obligation to tell my (good) boss the truth? Would any good employer even care?

Strength Routine Critique

Started strength training this February after 10 years of not working out. Played hockey up through college and had a strength trainer that was very helpful for teaching form. I did have a couple shoulder surgeries 10 years ago after a hockey injury, so February was basically all rehab to get that shoulder working again.

Started with StrongLifts 5x5 but cannot stop reading Strength Training books like Starting Strength, etc. so I like fiddling with the routine as much as I love training. Please let me know what you think, and thank you for your time!

  • Age: 29
  • Height: 5'7"
  • Weight: February = 148lbs / April = 160lbs
  • Goal: Personal enjoyment. Strength is main focus with a micro-goal of gaining size. Would love to hit 175lb by December 2016 and Squat 1RM = 250.

Current Numbers at 3x5 (sets x reps): Everything is up around 20% since February.

  • Squat = 150lbs
  • Deadlift = 195lbs
  • Overhead Press = 75lbs
  • Bench = 110lbs
  • Row = 100lbs

1RM Tested Mid-March

  • Squat = 175lbs
  • Deadlift = 225lbs
  • Bench = 135lbs

Plan:

Week 1 - 4 (Strength)

  • Monday:
    • 5x5 Squat
    • 5x5 Overhead
    • Planks
  • Tuesday:
    • 1x5 Deadlift
    • 5x5 Bench
    • 5x5 Row
  • Thursday:
    • 3x5 Squat
    • 3x5 Overhead
    • 3x5 Barbell Curl
    • Farmers walk
  • Friday:
    • 1x5 Deadlift
    • 3x5 Bench
    • 3x5 Row
    • Dips or Pullups

Week 5 (Volume)

  • Monday:
    • 3x8 Squat
    • 3x10 Overhead
    • Pullups
  • Tuesday:
    • 1x8 Deadlift
    • 3x10 Bench
    • 3x10 Row
  • Thursday:
    • 3x8 Squat
    • 3x10 Overhead
    • Chinups
  • Friday:
    • 1x8 Deadlift
    • 3x10 Bench
    • 3x10 Row

Repeat. Possibly a deload on week 6, but going to see how I feel after 5. Will just keep progressing linearly as much as I can.

I don't get my feelings hurt, just want honest opinions if this is a good plan or if I missed something. Thanks again.

EMSKR: How to be happy alone?

I've recently come to a conclusion: How can I be happy with another person if I can't be happy alone? Whenever I feel down or depressed, for some reason I always turn to women. This is creating a sort of dependency on others instead of learning to help myself.

My friends are telling me that this is a natural reaction and that there is nothing wrong with it, but if I could just learn to be content by myself, I'll not only be able to be happy, but I'll have more success with women in the future.

What should I do? Any tips? If anyone wants information on my hobbies and/or any background info, just comment.

How to learn how to lift for work.

Hey folks, this might be too basic of a question, but I'm interested in getting into some basic strength training for a very specific purpose.

I recently have found my way into what is basically a dream job for me. Exceptionally good pay, in a field that I am very interested in. The catch: I will sometimes be expected to do some lifting of heavy machinery/equipment. This has been a serious problem for me in past jobs that I've cared much less about.

I'm 30, 5'11 and about 165 pounds, which as far as I know is healthy. I'm in pretty good shape, I run 3 times a week, basically never get winded and eat reasonably healthy and balanced meals. However, I can't lift things to save my life. Picking up a box that weighs around 40 to 50 pounds is an ordeal for me, and I feel like my arms/legs are going to give out after a few seconds of this. I've been shown proper form (e.g. not lifting with your back, no twisting, things like that) but it's just not something I seem to be able to.

When trying to research basic training for remedying this problem, all of the advice I'm finding seems to be targeted to toning muscles, looking good, and losing weight. I don't give a shit about any of this. I just want to be able to pick up some heavy boxes without feeling like I'm going to fall apart if I don't drop them right away so I don't lose my otherwise awesome job.

Are there any resources that would be ideal for this type of thing? Is learning how gyms work going be a thing I have to do, or can cheap-ish equipment and body-weight stuff probably get me there? All my life I've always only worried about cardio type training, so I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to any other kind of activity.

EMSKR: How to be comfortable with confrontation.

Hey guys, I'll tie this to a specific situation I'm currently dealing with and hopefully it can carry over to aspects I, and maybe others deal with. Quick preface: I'm a passive non-confrontationalist. Confrontation & conflict have just never been my things.

Here's the current situation. I live in an apartment in a major city, and have for over 2 years. For the first 16 months, I shared the apartment with one of my best & oldest friends who was equally as passive & agreeable as me. It was the easiest roommate to have. His work situation fell apart, he moved out, and I had to find a new roommate off Craigslist. This girl came through, who is lovely & had a positive energy upon meeting.

Fast forward about 9 or 10 months, and she hasn't once contributed to the upkeep of the apartment. I am admittedly a neat-freak, and like to clean the floors & the kitchen once a week. It is a 2 bed/1 bath place; not huge. She overheard me about a month ago telling my father of the situation over the phone, in which I mentioned how I wished she would show the apartment the same respect I did (I was outside and thought I was well out of ear-shot, must have been an open window). Early the next morning, she sent me a text that read, "I'm sorry I didn't help clean last night, if you ever want help just ask..."

Fast forward to tonight, 11pm. She's in her room & her light's off. I know, it's late. But, the floors are dirty, I'm up, and I want to clean them. I close the door that separates the living room from the bedrooms, vacuum for about 15 minutes, and sweep & mop the rest of the apartment (including outside her room). After I finish I see my phone has a text from her reading "I have to be up early to work, why do you wait until now to do that?"

I have not responded, and want to have a productive dialogue with her without it being A.) passive-aggressive B.) over text & C.) a total re-hash or inventory of everything each of us has cleaned. I understand it was much later than a reasonable person might be cleaning, but I feel like if she wants the apartment cleaned at certain times and not cleaned at others, she can come out and either do it herself or help me do it.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this post, and even more so if you have some tips for having confrontational, and productive conversations with those you are close with.

TLDR: My roommate doesn't help clean; she complained about me cleaning late. How to calmly & comfortably confront?

Question from a weak skinny guy.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and to strength training hoping to get any input from you experienced lifters. I recently started strong lifts 5x5 as every beginner does to get into shape. I'm 6'2 long limbed 20 year old 180lb skinny and very weak. I'm not exactly out of shape though, I've always done martial arts, but I'm very weak. I can only squat 120lbs for strong lifts on a good day. Around week 3 I injured myself doing barbell rows with about 75lbs. 75lbs! Now because of that baby weight I can't do squats or sit in a chair for more than 5 minutes without feeling pain in my lower back. I stopped the routine and have been in total recovery mode for about 3 weeks stretching and icing. I feel loose and ready to get back in it.

Now my question. I wanna go back into strength training really bad but should I start with a bodybuilding style routine (moderate weight, moderate to high reps) for about a month or two to build myself up a bit before doing strength training again? My hypothesis is that strength training puts a lot of stress on the body compared to bodybuilding and that low weights would stimulate muscle growth and better allow me to handle that stress. Thank you all for your input.

EMSKR: I have the honor of teaching pledge members how to be men. Help me out here.

In the fall I will have 30 new pledge members for my fraternity that I am tasked with instructing how to be men. For this semester we're adding a new component to the education, in the past it's always just been about the fraternity and our history and rituals. I want to start a new program where for 30 minutes every week I'll teach them a life skill (ie how to dress, how to treat an SO, firearm safety, how to play poker, general man shit) over a course of 8 weeks.

So my request is this, what are 8 useful things I - an average man - can learn and teach to 30 people in 30 minutes?

New guy looking for a mentor of sorts

I'm pretty new to fitness and I've desided on Strength training cause its something I can get pumped about. (As opposed to running biking ect) I am terribly new and looking for someone I can ask questions about pre basic and basic concepts. I'm pretty embarrassed about how little I know so I'm hoping for some one on one mentoring so I won't get discouraged or have as much anxiety. Thanks ahead of time.

EMSKR: How to wash Slacks/Dress Pants

So, I'm a first year college student currently seeking my first ever job. That being said I don't have much money for a dry cleaner, and being that I wear dress clothes frequently for a extra curricular activity and I was wondering if there was a way (if any) I could wash my slacks at home.

[EMSKR] Moving past the anger, bitterness and mistrust from years of rejection and bad women.

"Just get over it bro" isn't helpful. That's the emotional repression that helped create this baggage in the first place.

Last night I was in a situation where I realized I have alot negative feelings and unrealistic expectations towards women. And its because I have had mostly negative experiences with women so now I'm resentful and bitter. I'm not talking about just rejection in the dating scene either but relationships with lying and emotional manipulative women.
