EMSKR: How to re-write a last will and testament.
I wrote my first Will about 8 years ago before I had a major brain surgery. I had a girlfriend, my family, and my buddies to split my things amongst. My first will was focused on tangible things, like my record collection, my artwork, and other material assets like my car and other "stuff".
8 years later I am in a very, very different place in my life. I have a a different (new) car, I hold the title on my wife's car, I have a motorcycle, a mortgage, student-loan debts, a 401K plan. All of this is to say that I own (and owe) decidedly different stuff. I also got married. Lots of the things in my initial will look downright silly to me now. So I am looking for the EMSK version of how to fix the document that all the lawyers will read when I die or get incapacitated. I have a Power of Attorney document set up as a contingency, so that is not the issue here.
Ron Swanson's version of his will is simple: "give all my stuff to my wife." Although there is some basic truth to this, it is not enough to go on, especially when you have debts, not just assets. I will (of course) talk to my lawyer and draft something that makes sense on the legal side, but I am looking for some manly advice on the non-legal stuff.
To reiterate, I am NOT looking for legal advice, but instead some general principles to help me make sense of my material/immaterial assets/debts. I am looking for general advice on what to do and what not to do when updating a will. All advice will be considered and all comments will be upvoted, unless its advice that sounds like the crap I included in my first will.

In it, it says that front squats are much better for your back than a back squat because 1) less weight is being used so less stress and 2) the front squat allows you to more easily keep a neutral back and pelvis where as the back squat more easily encourages APT/lower cross syndrome because "the problem with back squats is that it’s next to impossible to perform them with a completely erect spine and pelvis. Any time you lean forward and arch your back you’re tightening/shortening your low back muscles and hip flexors and lengthening your abdominals and glutes. Add in a bunch of compressive weight over a span of 25 or 30 reps several times per week and it’s easy to see how back squats encourage anterior tilting pelvic positioning.".
I was wondering, how valid is this article and statement because, specifically the one regarding it being close to impossible to have an erect spine in back squats? Furthermore, if in the back squat, the bar was relatively high up, could you not still have a relatively straight torso and maintain that similar position to a front squat?

activating glutes/hams in the deadlift and variations?
A while back I watched this Alan Thrall’s RDL video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEy_czb3RKA
In the video he discusses how the glute and hamstrings need to be more active in the deadlift and the three things lifters need to learn for the deadlift are loading the hamstrings, engage the posterior chain, and hip hinge.
I started doing Romanian deadlift and stiff leg DL’s to strengthen the posterior and practice loading the hams.
However, with SLDL, since I start off the floor with higher hips and as a result, less quad involvement, I find it is much easier to simply rely on my lower back to initiate the pull. I don’t want this.
So, what are some good videos/articles/cues/personal experiences that can help me engage the glutes and hams and ease off the lower back THROUGHOUT the entire movement in specifically the stiff leg deadlift and other deadlift movements in general?

5 sets of 10 vs. vice versa?
recently, I tweaked my back doing 5x10 stiff leg deadlift. I believe part of this was caused by the fact that sets of 10 were simply too much at once, so my form broke down.
I was wondering, if I were to do 10 sets of 5, how would this affect me, both in terms of injury and training stimulus.
In other words, I’m fairly certain I can maintain form for 5 reps, so would doing 10 sets of 5 be more effective in terms of preventing injury? Or if not 10 sets of 5, at least 5 sets of 10 with a shorter rest period in the middle of a set.
Disregarding injury, how else is 10 sets of 5 different than 5 sets of 10, both in a single training session and in the long term (how would progression from workout to workout differ, etc)? Or is there not much difference?

pushing through/hip hinging with the SLDL?
Hi,
a while back I had problems in my deadlift where my back did most of the work. I think I improved mainly by using more leg drive (thinking of the movement as a push) and also practicing the hip hinge movement once the bar starts moving up past shins/knees, particularly using romanian deadlifts.
recently, I started doing stiff leg deadlifts, and to remove any confusion, to me, an SLDL is essentially a deadlift with high hips, I try my best to keep a neutral back, and my legs do bend, so it is not really "stiff" legs.
I've encountered the same problems in the SLDL as I did a while back in the deadlift. I feel like my back is doing all the work. In fact, recently, as I gradually increased weight, I think it's gotten worse to where in the beginning I was definitely feeling it in my glutes/hams where as now it is becoming more taxing on my back.
So how can I go about fixing this? I have trouble with the cue of pushing through because my hips are much higher in the SLDL and as a result, there isn't much quad involvement or leg drive/pushing through and in regards to hip hinge, I seem to have a hard time pushing my hips forward until the bar is a bit off the ground. So essentially, the first portion of the lift is a lot of back for me and I want to find a way to "pull" with my hamstrings and glutes rather than my back, if thats possible?

Hey r/strength_training, I think that I have a problem. Whenever I go to lift, I never can seem to get to the point where my muscles burn. I can sometimes pull it off if I do a drop set that accumulates to ~20 reps, but even that is questionable. Do you have any solutions for me?
Some Background I am a 6'2" male, ~180lb. Former collegiate distance swimmer (just graduated), and I seem to have a lot of trouble putting on muscle mass. When I lift I tend to do 7 different exercises, all 3 sets and 8-12 reps. I appreciate the responses.

Help critique my strength training program for advanced rock-climbing
This is a one month strength training schedule that I plan to perform before transitioning into a month long power phase. I will train four days a week.. two days on, one day off, alternating between Workout A, Workout B, and a rest day. I used a bunch of different sources to put this together, but the main sources are Rock Climber's Training Manual, pretty much all of Eric Horst's books, exrx.net, Mark Rippletoe's Starting Strength, and r/bodyweightfitness. I'm certain that I am forgetting a few but that covers the main ones.
Some background: I have been climbing 5 years and climb V9 and 5.13. In an attempt to break into double digit boulders, correct some posture problems, and continue to strengthen and stabilize my core, I decided to add some olympic lifts and barbell work to my routine along with some specific climbing exercises.
I do pretty much the same warmup both days consisting of dynamic stretches and bodyline core holds (planks, side planks, reverse planks, hollow holds and arch holds) with a few added finger tendon, elbow and shoulder dynamic stretches on workout A days. Dynamic stretches and bodyline work has been consistent for a few months now to train mind to get ready to perform/workout by going through the habitual routine.
Workout A: Climbing/Hangboard/Pull muscles (upper, lower and core)
Hangboard workout (~45-60mins)
3 sets of 5-8 reps with usually +5lbs between each set and +5lbs each workout to previous max. Deadlift is exception, especially for me since I am just incorporating barbell deadlifts into my routine, and I add 10lbs to max from workout to workout and only perform 1 set of 5 reps at max weight. (3 mins rest between sets of pull-ups, 5 mins rest between sets of deadlifts, and 90 secs-3 mins rest between sets of the rest)
Back(lats): Un-even pull-ups
Hamstrings: Barbell deadlifts
Back: Dumbbell bent over rows
Side deltoid: Dumbbell upright rows
Upper trapezius: Clean grip shrugs
One set of each bicep workout in 5-8 rep range.
Bicep brachialis: Concentration bicep curls
Bicep brachioradialis: Hammer bicep curls
Then, I do 2 sets of 10-20 reps of one exercise from each muscle group.
Hip Abductors: TRX suspended hip abductors
Hip Flexors: TRX pikes, Ab wheel rollouts, Hanging leg raises
Abdominals: TRX jack-knives, Hanging leg raises, Isometric planks
Obliques: Isometric side bridges, TRX twists
Workout B: Push (upper, lower, and core) and antagonist muscles
For squats and bench press, I do 3 sets of 5 reps at a single max weight each workout. Adding 5-10lbs each workout to squat max and 2.5-5lbs to bench press max. Including warm-up sets, this would look like: 2x5@45lbs, 1x5@~65lbs, 1x3@~85lbs, 1x2@~105, then 3 work sets of 5 reps @ 130lbs. Then next workout, slightly increase warm-up weights and add weight to max. I rest 4-5 mins between sets.
Quads: Barbell squats
Chest: Barbell bench press
(3 sets of 5-8 reps with 90 secs to 3 mins rest between sets)
Quads: Dumbbell side lunges
Chest: Dips on olympic rings
Hip adductors: Side bridge hip abductions.
Front deltoids: Barbell press
Calves: Weighted calf raises
Triceps: Skull crushers
Rest day is yoga, stretching, meditation, foam rolling, accupressure, etc etc.
This is a work in progress and I am always looking for new information or feedback to help tweek my training plan. Any help, advice, critique would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! I recently started driving a pickup truck. The vehicle had sat in a garage for a while, so I thought I should check the tires. They were lower than the number on the sidewall of the tires, so I topped them off.
After a few weeks of bumpy rides, I asked around to see if there was a way to soften up the ride. One of my more mechanically inclined friends asked me if I had filled the tires beyond the door recommendations. I hardly knew what he was talking about. Turns out that there is a sticker just on the inside of the driver's side door that recommends a tire size and pressure. I dropped it to that number (which was 9 PSI less than the tire stated as max) and the ride is much smoother. I may lose a small amount of MPG but, gas is cheap at the moment.
I will probably still get new bushings and shocks for my truck, and quite likely a lift-leveling kit so I can fit some knobby winter tires, but that's another story... just thought I'd share what I learned today.
TLDR; Driver's side door has a tire pressure recommendation that may give a more comfortable ride than MAX PSI on the tire.

My grandfather died on a heart attack a few days ago. I'm still in shock. I'm trying to carry on, but part of me still feels like this is a bad dream, even though I know its not. I'm more aware of my own mortality. So first, how do I deal with this on an emotional level.
Second, This is the first close family member to die in my life, the closest were my great-grandmothers and great-aunts and uncles. I'm a pallbearer with my brothers and cousins, but my father isn't? what are the protocols of being at this end of the funeral, or at any end for sake of clarification?

Question about SLDL
Hi, I posted this here because I thought you guys would be the most help, if there are other subreddits that could work, I’d appreciate it if you guys could link them.
My question is: what is the line between “pain”/feeling it in a muscle during the workout versus actual pain/injury?
here is some context: I did stiff leg deadlift today for 5 sets of 10. I’ve done this recently in an attempt to work on using the glutes/ham more and using the back less during hip hinge movements.
During the workout, I felt my ham and glutes working, but I also felt it in my back a lot. As I was resting, my back would be stiff and tenser. However, after I moved onto my next exercise, my back tightness had subsided and now it's an hour and a half later and I'm fine.
I have tweaked/injured my back before and every time that back stiffness/tightness/pain extends to beyond my workout, which it hasn’t yet today.
So in essence, what I’m asking is in a perfect deadlift/Romanian deadlift/SLDL session, how is my back supposed to feel, is it normal to feel tightness during the exercise only or am I slowly destroying my back? in other words, especially for the back, the stiffness from injury feels a lot like the stiffness from working it out, how do I differentiate?

I am looking for a possible solution that will keep the back of my shirt tucked in. Throughout the day the back always seems to come untucked and just looks messy and unprofessional. The only solution I have come up with and it still doesnt solve the problem just delays it is to tuck my shirt into my underwear, though I'm not exactly fond of this either. Any other tips or tricks to prevent this?
Better to add reps or weight now?

New Powerlifting Routine - Want opinions on layout
Hey Guys,
So lately I've been on a Powerbuilding split, for lack of a better word. Essentially I come into the gym, do my one powerlifting lift of the day, then move into body building. Day 1 would look like 3x3/5x5 Bench + Incline DB Press + Dips + Low Cable Flyes + Tricep work, etc.
I want to move back into more powerlifting while still doing bodybuilding. I'm going to keep it basically the same but with squats every day and 1-2 ab movements at the start/end of every day. Here's what I have so far:
Day 1: Squat + Bench + Chest Day 2: Squat + Deadlift + Legs Day 3: Squat + Bench/Overhead Press + Shoulders Day 4: Squar + Overhead Press/Deadlift + Back
Now, you can see that there's some fuckery going on in days 3 and 4. I want both my bench and deadlift to go up (obviously), but I'm not sure if I should only dead once a week and bench twice a week with OHP on Day 4, or if I should just hit bench once and deadlift twice with OHP on Day 4. Is deadlifting once a week too little? Is the 2x bench + OHP too much? I definitely want to include the OHP since I think it's a vital lift, and I want it so that I have a balanced program that I can stick to for a long time that gets me strong as fuck while also looking good.

Help hitting that elusive 1RM on the flat bench
I'm struggling to get above 400lbs, more realistically, 385 - 395lbs. appears to be a problem. I can't seem to get above those numbers. I tried doing volume work which didn't actually see very good results for the effort. Instead I've reverted back to a simple 12-10-8 regime with additional sets (triples or doubles) to help finish the chest off. I am seeing far better results with this routine than with volume work. That being said, my calculated 1RM is well beyond what I can currently press.
An example routine for the flat bench is:

Advice for a newb: Strength training and hip flexor issue

I'm keen to start the couch to 5k running thing and last night was my second time, I'm having a lot of problems with everything being too tight, which I am aware of being a issue for me. I've had lots of physio over the years but only recently discovered strength training. I was diagnosed with one leg "signifigantly" shorter than the other, over-pronation in both ankles (my foot does not move much at all towards my ankle). I spend a lot of time sitting and have a pot belly. I started strength training with a personal trainer last year but then I had to move countries and this new place has no gym and definitely no-one willing to teach (a mere female, lol) strength training.
I've read over the thread aimed specifically at hip flexor strengthening and found the first stretch from Kit helpful: standing lunge - I can hold for around 10 seconds (it was less earlier this week).
But my knee feels "soft" when I try to do the exercises involving putting my knee against the wall / sofa and I wasn't feeling anything at all in the way of a stretch.
I went running last night (only 25 mins x 2) and before I went I did as many hip flexors exercises as I could find online: - Standing lunge - standing high knee - leg swings - lying down and lifting the leg up - 30 secs hold and then 10 quick lifts - hip flexor stretch - one knee up but no sofa wall

Generally I do a range of stretches every other night - Calf stretch - front and back - Sitting while reaching down to touch the floor - Ankle over the knee and bending forward to the ankle - hip raises - hold for 10 seconds x 10
(or less, depending on time available), it makes things very uncomfortable for me if I don't.
However, this morning despite all the above I woke up with a really sore middle back and my bottom is currently numb from sitting.
I realise I need a strategy but I'm not sure where to start, I'm willing to buy things as I am not going to find a reasonable gym set-up here (extreme rural China) and am looking a number of TRX set-ups / foam rollers and maybe a step-up / weights too.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Time (to call 911)
I dealt with a woman who had a stroke today while working, if you suspect someone is having a stroke, stay calm, ask the victim to try to smile, then to raise both arms, and then to repeat a simple sentence. If they cannot complete all three tasks, they may be suffering from a stroke, don't be afraid to call 911, you might just save a life. Keep them calm by keeping VERY light conversation while you wait for paramedics, as they may be confused and afraid.

I honestly have no idea where to buy shoes. I've always gotten them them from Payless or Target or had to buy them through my work (non-slip for food service). I've since started caring about what I wear and would like to branch out away from sketchers and other "dad" shoes, but my usual stores have a very limited men's shoes section with some pretty terrible looking brands.
I'd love to buy myself a pair of (affordable) dress shoes, and a pair of everyday shoes, something along the lines of converse. Any idea where I can get these without breaking the bank?

Every man should know this.
You save up a fair chunk of change for your lovely little lady. You get a sense of her style, go to a jeweler, and find something that you like, and think she'll really like. You gift it, she really appreciates the gesture, but maybe something feels off a week later.
The shape, the style, maybe the color or materials. Does it match what she has in her mind? The wedding dress in her mind that she's scrapbooking? If she's super polite, she might not say anything. If she's rude, she might even bitch about it.
Now, I'm not talking about budget, and of course if she really puts up a stink about your gesture then that's a whole set of red flags. I'm talking about being thoughtful enough to get her exactly the style and shape she wants, and to prevent any friction you might experience in the process.
Flip this around. Imagine you want Bonestorm, but end up with Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge. You might be nice enough to thank her and shrug it off, but imagine having to Lee Carvallo's face on your finger forever.
But what about tradition? Screw tradition. I'd rather have happiness and logic.
Get a receipt, don't ever sign anything making the ring permanently your property, and don't do anything custom, like engraving or making a new ring from scratch. Give her the gift, and a short time after, make sure she knows. Sample text:
"I know this ring will be yours for a very long time, and I wanted to make sure it's exactly what you want. This ring, now, is a symbol. I've scheduled an appointment with the jeweler, and next Saturday, we're going to go ring shopping. You're free to keep this one, of course, and I'm looking forward to seeing how close I got."

In this case it's a pair of black Bluetooth earbuds that chafe like absolutely no tomorrow and I would rather prefer to stop using them. The problem is that my parents bought them for me and as such they get mad when I don't wear them. It's also very difficult to hide that I don't use them as I live with my parents. For context, I'm also 15 years old, so that might help.

Any kind of food that has been deep frozen, can be cooked, without any added ingredient straight from the freezer. You do not have to put it into the microwave oven.
Just the humidity locked frozen inside the food, while it evaporates, will cook it thoroughly, without having to add oil, or anything else.
Ideal for deep frozen potatoes, frozen meat balls, frozen chicken, but I have not tried it with vegetables.
I suggest you put the food on a piece of baking paper and add as many spices as you want. Fast and relatively healthy, since you do not have to fry anything.
Now I'm not saying it's the best food, but it can be fast (~20'@150c) and very easy took as well as no need to wash anything afterwards since no liquids or salsas were used.

First and foremost, the most important thing you can do in the event of an emergency is to make sure that someone, either you or someone you designate, has called whatever the local emergency number is.
Getting help on the way early is critical, there have been times as a paramedic where I have seen two or three minute delays in summoning help mean the difference between life and death. For those who are uncomfortable with the thought of dealing with blood or getting involved in first aid type scenarios, be the one to call for help. Some good guidelines for this role is to remain calm, take a few deep breaths and compose yourself and your thoughts before you actually call. Follow whatever prompts the dispatcher asks of you, and try to offer insight into "where" the victim is, such as the front of a building, back of a building, etc. Having someone out front to meet the first responders is helpful as well.
Bleeding Control Venous, Arterial (no tourniquet, Arterial (with tourniquet).
Tl;dr: Try to control it with direct pressure, placing a clean bandage (or shirt if nothing else is around) over the wound and pressing down. If bleeding continues, elevate it. If blood is squirting and can't be controlled with these techniques, use a tourniquet...just make sure it is visible and you tell whoever comes to take over that one has been used.
Choking: For someone who is choking, there are a few brief points I would like to share. First, as long as they are coughing and making noise, they are moving air. It might sound horrible, but they are still able to move air. Don't slap them on the back or do the heimlich maneuver, this could cause a partial airway obstruction to become a complete obstruction. Make sure that the local emergency number has been called and encourage the victim to keep coughing until they either cough up the item themselves or the item becomes a complete airway obstruction. CPR: Seems scary, but it is really simple. I have taught this in less than ten seconds in real life. The biggest thing is before you begin, first call for help, and second check to make sure they are not breathing and have no pulse. If they are not breathing and do not have a pulse, you do CPR. One great thing to keep in mind is that clinically, you are dead if CPR is being performed, so don't be afraid to do CPR... you can't make them any more dead than they already are. Also, now it is taught to do hands only (compressions only) CPR for those uncomfortable with the thought of rescue breathing. Compression are regarded as the most effective aspect of CPR and early application of compression lead to a better chance of survival for victims.
Seizures: If someone has a seizure, there really isn't anything you can do. The best thing you can do is call for help and try to keep them from injuring themselves further. Keep them from flopping down the stairs, smashing their head on furniture, drowning, rolling into traffic, that sort of thing. Also, you cannot swallow your tongue... so, please, don't let someone stick something in their mouth. It might cause them to break teeth or get choked on blood.
Other Tidbits: For serious falls or car accidents, unless there is an immediate threat to their life (as in they will die in the next two minutes if left where they are) leave them how you find them are and encourage them to remain still.

4) Do they provide free inspections?
If the roofing contractor you call cannot answer "Yes" to every one of these questions, be skeptical. It would suck to have to get a roof replaced twice, because a shady contractor took your money and ran. Or done a half-ass job and is holding out for more.
