EMSK: How to purify water during an emergency
The treatments described below work only to remove bacteria or viruses from water. If you suspect the water is unsafe because of chemicals, oils, poisonous substances, sewage or other contaminants, do not drink the water. Don't drink water that is dark colored, has an odor or contains solid materials.
Purifying by boiling
If your tap water is unsafe, boiling is the best method to kill disease-causing organisms.
If tap water is unavailable, the following may be considered as potential water sources. Water taken from these sources should be boiled before drinking.
- Rainwater
- Lakes
- Rivers and streams
- Natural springs
- Ponds
Caution: Many chemical pollutants will not be removed by boiling.
Cloudy water should be filtered before boiling. Filter cloudy water using coffee filters, paper towels, cheesecloth or a cotton plug in a funnel.
- Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one full minute.
- Let the water cool before drinking.
- Add two drops of household bleach per gallon to maintain water quality while in storage.
Purifying by adding liquid chlorine bleach
- Treat water by adding liquid household bleach, such as Clorox or Purex.
- Household bleach is typically between 5.25 percent and 8.25 percent chlorine. Read the label.
- Avoid using bleaches that contain perfumes, dyes and other additives. Be sure to read the label.
- Cloudy water should be filtered before adding bleach.
- Place the water in a clean container. Add the amount of bleach according to the table below.
- Mix thoroughly and let stand for at least 60 minutes before drinking.
| Volume of Water to be Treated | Bleach Solution to Add |
|---|---|
| 1 quart/1 liter | 5 Drops |
| 1/2 gallon/2 quarts/2 liters | 10 Drops |
| 1 gallon | 1/4 teaspoon |
| 5 gallons | 1 teaspoon |
| 10 gallons | 2 teaspoons |

Had some visual hallucinations while warming up. What the heck?
Last Wednesday I was doing deadlift sets, and after setting the bar down I had lights flash across my vision, like someone was shooting bottle rockets or waving a sparkler past my head. Anyone know what this might be? It wasn't the typical "seeing stars" from standing up quickly or about to pass out. I felt fine, not light headed at all. I was a little freaked out, but after a few minutes rest I completed the rest of my sets without issue.

Starting Strength
Hi Guys,
Seasoned lifter here but new to strictly strength training. I am doing starting strength as my strength sucks dick for the amount of years I've been lifting. My Squat sucks, My bench is average and my deadlift is average.
I'm on to week 3 of SS and I am absolutely obsessed. The weights are starting to catch up to me though. I had to repeat the last workout twice as my strength wasn't there.
Is this OK to do? If so, how many times should I do this without progressing to the next weight. Should I be hitting each 3 sets with 5 before? The reason I ask is that my squat has progressed marginally from my previous workout.
Hitting 3 x 2 x 1 on the first workout then managing 4 x4 x 3.
Should I remain at this weight until I hit the 5 x 5 x 5?
Many thanks for any help!

Dropping Fat... Alot of it (advice needed)
Hello people.
just a quick overview of my food situations, I will (am) eating at a 500 Calorie deficit.
I am 26, 250pounds and have already lost 53 pounds. I have tasted the success of weight loss, and kind of stalled and started drinking again.
I am now as of today back at the gym. I will stick to my diet as I know diet is 80% of weight loss. I want to see if this plan with the calorie deficit is worth it and ask a few questions. I do play sports but thats irrelivant now because stopped over Christmas.
Anyway: Monday: weight training Tuesday: Hour cardio with elevation mask Wednesday: weight training Thursday: Cardio with Mask Friday: Weight training Saturday Cardio with mask Sunday rest.
This is the plan i am heading into and started this morning, the weight lifting is FULL BODY, at least 1 excercise per muscle group. I have protein powder but sticking on a diet of 500 deficit, leaves me to eat 1700 calories a day, should I use 300 with my metoblic protein shake.
My end goal, in 18months or 2 years is be ripped, for now - I am trying to lose around 60pounds.190 is my goal. This is an extreme routine but I Can stick to it. how long do you think it will take my to drop the 60pounds on this routine. After 3 weeks the weight training goes into splits and concentrated, can I expect to gain a pound or 2 first 3 weeks of noob gains?
Thanks.

EMSK: how to write a resume as a recent college grad with no work experience...
A lot of job seekers don't include their "non-jobs" (i.e. non-paid activities) on their resume. You can take advantage of this with some creative language, and present these non-jobs in a way that shows their relevance to the job you're applying for.
Remember: potential employers don't care about what you want, they care about what you can do for them.
In the "Experience" part of your resume, include things like past volunteer work, extra-curricular activities and clubs that you're passionately involved in, and things of that nature - and describe your role as if it were a "real job".
So, for example, don't just write "volunteered for summer, teaching children" - speak to your duties. You might want to instead write "experience managing large groups of people, developed engaging training materials to help foster expertise".
There are more examples here (where I got the idea from) but this is the tl;dr version. Hope it helps.

Back to strength training and it feels so good. But what is a good ratio?
I finally have started real strength and power training after an extensive physical therapy and rehab journey from 4 herniated discs and 4 bulging discs in my lumbar and cervical vertebrae from an MMA Fight.
Stats 28 y/o Male 200lbs 14% bf 6'
Squat - 305lbs Deadlift - 350lbs Bench Press - 230 Push Press - 155lbs
What are good ratios for each I have seen everything from 1:1 to 3:1 depending on the lift?
Honestly I dont hold too much weight into a 1 RM for my athletic performance, but like to keep the 1rm as a measuring stick along with 5RM and 10RM because at least for athletics and fighting I believe it is not just important to be powerful for 1 rep but repetitively for many reps just like in a fight.
Where do you guys hold the 1RM in the performance spectrum?

Looking for some insight from anyone familiar with training-related back injuries
Male here, 31 yo, 238 lbs, strength training for two years, SQ 425 BP 300 DL 525 OHP 190
TLDR: Hurt my back deadlifting, doctor wasn't too forthcoming with the diagnosis, feel much better now and wondering what the hell happened.
Last Wednesday I hurt my lower back while attempting a 535 lb deadlift. I ramped up to it following the 5/3/1 scheme, and I was feeling perfectly fine. I got the bar about 3-4 inches off the floor when suddenly I felt a sharp stabbing pain to the left of my spine just above my butt. It was pretty intense, and the next morning I had almost no mobility. I couldn't bend over at all or bring my left leg up from a sitting position.
I saw the doctor the following morning and he didn't quite diagnose me. Rather, he prescribed me some Flexeril and told me to rest and stretch, which I've done. I was really concerned that this was gonna take me out for a few weeks, but over the weekend my back started to feel much better much quicker than I expected. This morning I almost feel back to 100%, there's just a little lingering soreness.
I'm curious if anyone's ever experienced anything similar and if there's any clue as to what exactly happened so I can avoid it in the future if possible.

A friend in need
So i have lurked around here for a bit and read a lot of threads and what i really liked is that you can ask for advice and that people are willing to help you out.
So first off im 18 years old, im 186cm, 93kg, i have learned to do a muscle up, (chicken wing style), i can dumbbell press 40kg in each hand (80kg) i usually use the boxing bag at the end of each workout like 20 min or so. I train my abs 2 times a week.
This is my first 2 week plan Tuesday: Chest, Shoulder Chest: 5x5 dumbbell benchpress (i work up to 40kg, so first is 32 then 34 and etc. 3x8 dumbbell incline press (32kg each arm) 3x8 cable cross (can do around 40-45 kg, each cable)
Shoulder: 5x5 smith overhead shoulder press ( around 40-50kg) 3x8 single dumbbell raise (15kg or 20 kg) 3x8 cable rear delt fly (15-20kg) 3x8 side laterals (8-10 kg)
Wednesday: Legs, Abs 5x5 barbell squat (75kg-80kg) 3x8 lunges (20kg each) 3x8 seated leg curl (40kg) 8 times a leg) 3x8 lying leg curl (40kg ) 8 times a leg
Abs: 3x10 oblique cable crunch (65kg) 3x20 min walking farmers carry (20kg in right arm, 5kg in left and switching) 3x10-15-20 landmine 180 with 20kg on and a bit of bar exercises (building up for the front lever) found the name its hanging pike but only 3 or 4 times though
Thursday: Arms, Biceps, Triceps, 3x8 one arm dumbbell preacher hammer curl (14-16kg) 5x5 dumbbell curl (16-20kg) 3x8 concentration curls (10kg) i do this at the end to really hit that last spot 3x8 incline hammer curls (12-14kg)
Triceps: 3x8 tricep dumbbell kickback (10kg) at end of workout 3x8 skullchrushers ( i do it with dumbbells and the variation where it goes behind the head, like anthlean-x or something on youtube :D) 14kg 3x8 cable triceps exension (same movement just with cable, dont have the machine in my gym) (50kg) 3x8 dips (10-20kg) depends on my mood I used to do triceps pushdown but did too much so i did not feel the use of the muscle as much as with the other exercises (i did not feel as much as a burn)
Friday: Back, Abs 5x5 deadlift (100-120kg) depends on someone there to spot me 3x8 bent over barbell rows (60kg) 3x8 pulldowns on machine (60kg) i warmup with 3x6 pull ups 3x8 cable rows (60kg)
abs 3x10 sit ups 3x10 heel touches 3x10 leg raises 3x10 hanging knee raises
Thats my workout plan for the first 2 weeks i go high weights low rep 5x5 then in the following 2 weeks i switchout those 5x5 to 3x8 and do low weight high rep and all the other excersises that have 3x8 i do 3x10
At the end of each workout i go home and use the boxing bag for about 20 min and then hit the shower. I take proteinpowder LinusPro WHEY ISO
So please guys comment and say what you think. i have done this about a 1 year and i can see some changes, i eat healthy, though i drink now and then which ruins it all.
Is it possible to gain sixpack with this workout? right now i struggle to get rid of my love handles but with this workout im thinking my body looks neat exept those damn love handles lol. So again please comment and give tip, tricks. If some names dont make any sense please say so because im not quite sure of the names of the exercises in english ^

EMSKR How to develop the stamina for late night drinking sessions with clients/colleagues?
What I mean is without relying on accrued alcohol tolerance and sacrificing health (Burning both ends of candle) how do I develop and maintain a level of energy to keep up mental alacrity and physical stamina to thrive in late night drinking/bonding session with colleagues and clients?
I have a pretty healthy diet and stick to a eating schedule so my hunger, energy and metabolism isnt all over the place. I sleep early and wake up early except for said meeting with clients which arent an everyday thing so its fine.
For exercise I do 100 push ups, planks and 100 burpees every morning (Prisoners workout) and plan on biking to work.

EMSK: How to make great coffee at home
If you want truly great coffee, not just good or acceptable, then it comes down to three things:
- The beans
- The Grind
- The Brew Method
There is a lot of hipster dick swinging with all of this, so here's the most basic and unbiased guide I can write. If you have two of the three items in the list, you will have good coffee. For great coffee you need all three.
The Beans
This is where the most preference comes into play. The only universal truths are that you want whole beans. Once beans are ground they start to lose their goodness. An easy comparison to make is garlic. Cut up some garlic and then try to use it for cooking in a few days, it will have lost most of its flavor. The beans are the same.
It's best to buy freshly roasted, locally if you live in a spot where that's an option. In places like Vancouver there are many choices of great roasted beans. If not, you can find good stuff here and there. Just know that Starbucks roasts their beans on the dark/bitter side. It's fine if you like it, but most people would like something less bitter.
The Grind
The grind is far more important than most people think. You want to own a grinder, so you can grind your coffee right before you brew it, but this is where the biggest hurdle comes into play: a good grinder is expensive. It's not enough to simply have the beans crushed up, for making great coffee the beans need to be ground consistently. This means you need a quality Conical Burr grinder. You can talk to all the coffee snobs you want, but at the end of the day the best grinder you can get for the money is the Baratza Encore, it's $129 if you live in the US.
The Brew
There are really just three brewing methods worth talking about: pour over, aeropress, french press.
A lot of people will claim that a pour over can't be beat, but the time and expense of it isn't worth it to me. I like the taste of an aeropress brew better, and the Aeropress is only $27.
The only reason to consider a french press is if you need to be making three or more cups of coffee at once, and want it to be as easy as possible.
You may note that I haven't mentioned espresso at all. That's because it's simply not possible to make great espresso without putting up an incredible investment. You can get away with a Rocket r58 and a Baratza Virtuoso grinder for great espresso at home, but that's going to be a $3,000 setup. You really can't make great espresso on a cheap machine, or with anything but a superb grinder.
TL;DR: Buy an aeropress ($27), get the Encore Grinder ($129), and some locally roasted whole beans, and you will have better coffee at home than you can get at just about any cafe.
EMSK: How to "first date", by following the rule of "TWO".
A first date can be a scary experience for the both of you. So keep things "Light" by following the rule of two:
"Two people, Two hours, Two in the afternoon, and Two bucks."
Why?
Two people: Keep it personal, you want to be able to meet the person, to see if she/he is worth your time.
Two Hours: Keep it short, scheduling no more than two hours gives you time to meet the person. If things are going well, it leaves them wanting for more, if things are going awry it gives you a chance to escape. If you schedule, people will also be more willing to open up since they know this won't drag on forever (or too short)
Two in the afternoon: Preferably in the weekend. It's not very late, or very early. It's also a good time since, you are not taking up important "night out" time, or time with the family.
Two bucks: (Ok, proably more) Keep it "cheap". You don't need to impress your date on the first time you go out. Keep it simple, a coffee, a walk in the park, a beer, a game of pool....etc. The point is keeping it simple so the other person doesn't seem pressured.
So the point of this "rule" is to keep it simple so you and your date are at ease and are able to meet and get to know each other.
Try to adjust to your liking.

Review of The Champion's Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train, and Thrive
I first heard of The Champion's Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train, and Thrive on Lewis Howes podcast. After hearing the interview, I felt encouraged to purchase this book, and was glad I did. The book is full of great lessons, advice, and perspectives of amateur and professional athletes. We all know there are certain athletes that just stick out, whom are able to outperform, and are the "go-to-person" during game-deciding moments. Many of these athletes share that it is not just their physical ability that matters, rather it is the mental game that matters most. It is all about how you think and train your mind.
There are many sport psychology and personal development books which provide advice on how to improve areas of your life. This book provides free and simple strategies used by great athletes to train your mind. From the beginning, the book provides applicable skills, scenarios, affirmations, and awesome quotes to aide in your journey. The author preaches that every challenge must be faced no matter the circumstance. Whether you’re a professional athlete, a corporate titian, a business man, a retailer, or just someone who is trying to get by this book also provides strategies to overcome the inner resistance we all face; it is just a matter of finding the inner potential.
A few of the take-aways include: See Success (Visualization), Stay Positive, Be in the Moment, Mental Toughness, Find Your Zone, Be Comfortable with Discomfort, Realize Everyone Fails and much more.
Anyone can be a champion no matter where they are in life; one way to achieve this is by changing the way one thinks. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to understand the mentality of excellence and has a desire to improve their quality of life.

EMSK how to convert Farenheit to Celcius in their head.
I'm no mathematician by any stretch. But driving between Texas and New Mexico one wintry day, I started playing with my car's outside thermometer, flipping between F and C. I remembered the formula,
°C x 9/5 + 32 = °F
But who can really do the 9/5 conversion in their head? I reasoned that 9/5 is just multiplying by 2 and subtracting 10%.
So I started playing with the converted formula,
[(°C x 2)-10%]+ 32 = °F
and lo & behold, it worked!
Ex 1.
10°C to F.
10 x 2 = 20.
20 - 10% = 20 - 2 = 18.
18 + 32 = 50
10°C = 50°F
~~~~~~~~
Ex 2.
37°C (avg body temp) to F
37 x 2 = 74
74 - 10% = 74 - 7.4 = (74 - 7)=67, 67-0.4= 66.6.
66.6 + 32 = 98.6°F
Nowadays, as an American I don't even bother with the calculation. Cold but not freezing? C in the single digits. Chilly? Somewhere in the teens. Pleasant? 20-25. Warm 26-32. Hot 33-39. I know that 40C is 104F. So, that's my upper limit. I can tell you the temp in C to within a degree or two just from feel now. It still kind of amazes me that my fellow Americans outright reject such an easy system of measurement. EMSK how to convert Farenheit to Celcius in their head.
I'm no mathematician by any stretch. But driving between Texas and New Mexico one wintry day, I started playing with my car's outside thermometer, flipping between F and C. I remembered the formula,
°C x 9/5 + 32 = °F
But who can really do the 9/5 conversion in their head? I reasoned that 9/5 is just multiplying by 2 and subtracting 10%.
So I started playing with the converted formula,
[(°C x 2)-10%]+ 32 = °F
and lo & behold, it worked!
Ex 1. 10°C to F.
10 x 2 = 20.
20 - 10% = 20 - 2 = 18.
Boyfriend Wants Weights for Xmas - What Type/Size?
My boyfriend loves surprises, so I don't want to just go and ask him this question. I know he would love a dumbbell set for xmas. I found an adjustable weight set on Amazon (they are Bowflex) that get awesome reviews. (Here: http://ift.tt/1XgUE3x) I thought they would be perfect, then I realized they only go up to 50 lbs each (which seems like a lot to me). HOWEVER, that led me down a rabbit hole of googling and I ultimately realized I have no idea what I'm doing. Perhaps 50 lbs is not enough?! I've never been to the gym with him so I have no idea. I can't just casually ask him "so, how much are you lifting these days?" HAR HAR. So what do I get him? I want him to have something totally awesome. I'm pretty sure he could lift like 1,000 pounds, but I am his #1 fan so I am biased. ;) But I know for sure he can lift more than 50 lbs... :\
The only other thing I know about his workout habits is that he thinks crossfit is dangerous and he is a bit snobbish about it (haha!). No offense to those who enjoy crossfit! But hoping that might help. Thank you!
tl;dr: My boyfriend wants dumbbells for Xmas. He is really strong (I don't know how else to say this...). What size/types of dumbbells should I buy him?
EMSKR How to remain calm in all circumstances
When I am under pressure, I often find myself making shitty decisions that I otherwise normally wouldn't make. I'd like to be calm and make the best rational decision at all times but it seems like all the distractions prevent that from happening.
Here's one example. A few months ago, I was downstairs in the basement all alone in my house. I heard a loud noise upstairs and I was almost sure a robber had broken in. The first thing I did was empty-handedly run upstairs and kick the door open to confront the robber(s). I ended up breaking the door because of all the adrenaline and my mom wasn't too happy about that since it was a relatively new home. During that entire experience, there were 0 rational decisions that were made. Here are things that I normally would have done if I were a bit more calm..
-confirm if there were even robbers in the house by approaching door silently and listening
-only engage robber if I had the element of surprise
-grab at least a drum stick or another potential weapon...
This is just one example but I often make absolute shit decisions when I am under pressure.
In the past I've worked a lot of labor intensive outdoor oriented jobs, which required little to no thought on physical appearance other than "Be strong and hard working".
However I just took a job where my appearance, and all aspects of appearance will matter quite a bit. While I'm familiar with proper hygiene, one portion I'm not well versed on is nails.
EMSKR: How to intimidate somebody for the right reason?
I feel that everyone should know how to intimidate somebody for the right reason, this could be someone who sees you as a target and has or is in the process of demeaning you. My problem is that I tend to go a bit overboard, I've often skipped the psychological part and gone straight to physicality to defend my honor. I suppose that is the main purpose, to defend your honor when others would tread upon it.
How can you self condition yourself to approach someone in a way to intimidate but not cause bodily harm, unless it's absolutely necessary? I'd imagine maintaining an aura of confidence would be key and also knowing the right things to say. It can quickly spiral out of control when you start shouting profanities and get violent in an emotional situation.
Personally I feel the calm but determined personality to be the most civilized and potentially effective mindset to go about it. Think Fedor Emelianenko, a stone cold killer that doesn't show any unnecessary emotions and finishes fights without any ego involved. Are there ways to train yourself to become comfortable doing this without actually getting into legitimate confrontations?
EMSKR: What to do when an armed terrorist/mass murderer comes in and everyone is unarmed
I know in those situations (e.g. school shootings or Bataclan massacre) the odds are really not in the victims' favour, but I'm wondering what would still be the best reaction, if not to save your own life, at least to save the others'.
For instance, Ben Carson caused some controversy when he advised that people should have rushed all together on the shooter to stop him, instead of letting him kill them one by one. Maybe it was insulting for the victims, but I wonder if it's not pretty good advice. Indeed the shooter can't win if people rush on him from all sides, even if they're unarmed, and then only a few people would die instead of all. However I'm really not sure this is realistic. If one person stands up to stop the shooter, he will get shot dead even before he has finished to explain his plan. And even if he managed to tell it, would anyone else be convinced and risk their life?
So what else should a man do in such a situation? Hide and discretely contact the police? Try to take the shooter by surprise? What moves might work against someone with a (machine) gun? Alternatively, what pieces of furniture might be used as a protection or as a weapon?
I know the question is general while the answer depends heavily on the situation, but feel free to imagine a scenario that fits your advice. Also don't hesitate to share stories of unarmed people who managed to stop shooters or terrorists.
EMSK: yeast infections [nsfw, sorry]
So I just recently got over a yeast infection and it was quite difficult to find information on it and identify it, and there was no info on the topic on this sub, so I thought I would make a thread just to inform some fellow men about what to do.
I first noticed something was wrong over a week or two ago. However, I thought it was just friction marks from usage. The clue was that it was all gathered just under the tip and persisted even for a couple days unused, when friction marks are typically along the shaft and fade away quickly. Then believing it to be a hygienic issue, I started obsessively washing it, but that didn't really help at all, either.
After my girlfriend suggested it might be a yeast infection, I googled it and it matched the symptoms (red, shiny, wet marks just under the tip on the shaft). There were lots of different tips and advice for how to handle it and one source even said "just pick 3 or 4 different treatments and then apply them for 30 days after all symptoms have disappeared." lol
Well, one thing that seemed like a good idea was white vinegar. I tried that first. It worked fantastically. Gave it a couple dunks, poured some all over, and rinsed it off in the shower. Went away almost immediately, is healing up nice. Stung minimally.
tl;dr if you get a yeast infection, dunk your dick in vinegar
EMSKR: Dealing with a retaliator that persists even if you deal with it as a "Man."
I made a post not too long ago about a retaliator I've been dealing with and asked for advice on how the "Man," way to go about would be. The wisdom that was directed towards me urged me to not retaliate back myself as that would be playing the perpetrators own game and besides bringing unwanted risks to myself, wouldn't be the mature route to take.
I can believe in that since it's the higher route to take, the thing is that this wasn't a one time retaliation in the past but in fact multiple incidents and every time I would take the non retaliating route mself. They've varied in occurrences and intensity of the acts. For the most part they've deescalated greatly ranging from thrown glass throughout the street (made to look random), indecent littering (condoms, tampons, fast food), and most recently loitering often where the trash is left. Law enforcement has been unable to take any action against these individuals due to a lack of evidence to pin them for these acts. I don't have a cctv system which limits my ability to acquire any useful footage of things that could occur within view of my property but I plan on getting one.
Today I was awoken by my car alarm going off, I got out of bed and went outside turn to it off by key and did a walk around, no noticeable damage or signs of anything that set it off. I notice some teenage kids nearby, they're playing with a football but appeared to all be gathered in the driveway. I take a look at the cars and notice one that could be related to the retaliator. Putting on my running shoes I take a lap around the block to pass the house and sure enough none other than the retaliator them self is present. I make solid eye contact towards them as I jog past and they don't make any effort to appear as though they know me. I'm more than convinced that the kid, or one of his buddies, struck my vehicle to set the alarm off. Most likely by throwing the football at it or by kicking the tire to make it inconspicuous.
My issue is this, I'm a little older than this kid, who is a senior if I recall correctly, and feel no desire to engage in the same tactics that they are which according to this sub is a good thing. The unfortunate part is even though I can continue going about it like a man and not stoop to their level that makes me feel like I have a very limited repertoire at my disposal to directly deal with future occurrences besides getting passive counter measures such as a cctv system (really the best and only option I feel I have at the moment which isn't acquired due to funds). I had a strong desire to walk up to the kid and get in their face but didn't know if it was the best thing to do in the long run. What bothers me most is that this individual refuses to ever portray their opinion to me face to face and has chosen to commit these acts behind my back and pretty much avoids any person to person conflict.
What would be gained or lost by confronting them face to face in an intimidating fashion? I'm presuming that doing so would be taking the lower route as I'd be giving into my anger and hate by doing so, possibly something that they actually desire. At this point in time it feels as though unless I somehow go about catching them in the act of doing something that I stand no chance at pinning them legally or personally for their efforts. Today's occurrence seemed like the epitome of "Let's try and bait this person without actually being there to face any consequences, though nearby enough so they'll know it was us." I remember my friends group got into a huge feud with another at my school over an incident which resulted in a huge back and forth fest which resulted in many peoples cars being damaged, and egos clashing. In the end it didn't really matter who struck harder, rage was the ever present underlying factor that inspired the conflict to continue.
Surely something must be done other than observe and report, I know who's doing it, they know that I know, and they continue to do things that are hard if not impossible to pin them for. Talking on a purely theoretical level I feel that a physical altercation in my favor would be more than enough to discourage them to continue these acts, this is surely not the most mature or safe route but suffice to say I've had immediate success with it in the past. In highschool I once had two kids who I never had any altercations with throw a coin at me in class, I was an introvert and mostly kept to myself, I asked them to stop, they threw another and I got up walked over to the closest kid and slapped him, they were both shocked that I did it and asked why I had to do that, I said I already asked you to stop. I never had another incident with them again, I destroyed them in that moment as witnessed by most of the class who had just been watching me approaching destruction, our teacher was extremely old and often wouldn't pay attention to mischievous acts. Applying that example to my current predicament would in my opinion have similar results. It is a different setting though I can't deny, my honor was immediately being challenged in front of my peers and I chose the only route that could actually have any effect on stopping those kids from continuing. How is my situation now that much different though? If I do nothing won't this individual continue to commit these acts?
TLDR: Retaliator continues to commit acts regardless of taking the mature route and not retaliating myself. Unable to catch them in the act or prove that they are doing these acts which has resulted in law enforcement being incapable of taking action. Seeking alternatives to discourage this behavior from continuing.
A question about PHUL
So I've been on PHUL for 7 weeks now. Since this is the /r/ I heard about it in, I'll assume you're familiar with it. My question is regarding Power Lower, which I did today.
The way mine is programmed is: Squat 3x5 Deadlift 3x5 Leg Press 4x10 Calf Press (superset) 4x10 Leg Extension 4x8
I'm wanting to get into Strongman, so I'd presume Deadlift would have a higher priority over Squat, but I'm pretty spent after working my way up to, and through, the work sets, and it makes me wonder if it's hindering my Deadlift progress.
I understand it's usually suggested to do squats before deadlift, but wanted to get y'all's input to see if you'd change things up/around.
EMSKR: How to deal with retaliation?
When someone tries to grief you by causing physical or mental damage to you or your property what is the best way to go about dealing with it? Can it ever be justified to retaliate back even harder?How can you not strike back but still win in principle?
My property was struck by an individual and I have the choice of hitting them harder or doing nothing as law enforcement doesn't have enough to go off. It doesn't sit well with me knowing that people can do stuff like this and end up getting off essentially scott free, fighting fire with fire would be satisfying though risky if one were caught or it resulted in a back and forth but then again it could show that you wouldn't be trifled with.
Is it wrong to think of it like getting punched then punching your attacker back? In that sense I'm sure most would be inclined to do that but this is a bit different. So far all I feel is that I've shown that no consequences will come but I could easily turn that around pretty quickly, the question remains however, is it the right thing to do?
EMSKR: How do you show appreciation to yourself?
So I'm getting back into mindfulness meditations, and at the end of the session it says "show yourself love and appreciation for doing this practice today, whatever that means to you" Unfortunately what that means to me are video games (not great since I'm trying to wind down not back up), Reddit (makes me feel apathetic), or masturbating(great for the 5 minutes it takes me, then shitty for the next ten). Sure I have books or movies, but neither of those things I feel like doing out of love or appreciation. Nor do I have any form of disposable income so even a small treat is out of the question.
So I just wondered if any of you had ways that you show appreciation/love to yourself in more constructive ways than mine.
Hey guys, first here are my stats 31, 187lbs(august 196lbs) Squats 215, bench 155, row 125, ohp 115, deadlift 225 So I am in the middle of a cut after doing a dirty bulk last year and went away from training for about 6 months. Gained lots of fat. My goal is to get to around 10-15 percent body fat and keep as much muscle and strength as I can. Anyways I am struggling lots with mostly squats and deadlifts. Should I reduce my work by 10-15 percent and stick with that till my cut is done or try something else. Today I did 5x5 of squats at 185 and it felt like I was working but not to the point of passing out. I own some my own equipment, I currently have a short squat rack, barbells+weights, bench, powerblock 15-70lbs and a concept2 row machine. In short should I stick with 5x5 and stay at a reduced 10% deload till I am ready to go up again or try something else. Thanks
If there are any tips for this, I'd love to know!
Anyone else totally lack squat work capacity for volume?
I just moved over to the DUP routine as perscribed by Zourdos with the intensity/volume etc blocks, and I just tried my first 4x8 @290lbs squat day. My true 1RM is about 455 (highbar olympic, 6'3 210) and Ive been operating at 410 (90%) but holy shit if I could get past 6 reps for a couple sets at 290 (70%). Anyone else find this? I guess it makes sense; I usually operate within 1-4 reps and pretty low volume/high frequency. I was just a little shocked to see how fatigued I am getting despite the much higher 1RM.
The lazy guy in me wants to just make my squats power and strength days, but I was hoping for a little feedback as to whether I should follow the program to a T for squats.
Loaded carries and body weight regime
I'm asking for the help of anyone with some experience with loaded carries and bodyweight workouts to design a plan for me to do each day. I was lifting weights nearly everyday from last December up until June this year and had to stop due to lack of money. I'm currently unemployed and am able to train everyday.
current stats 115kg/253lbs at 5'6/170cm. Currently working with a 40kg bag for shouldering/cleans/loaded carries
lifting stats as of June B/P 80kg/176lbs Squat 100kg/220lbs Bent over row 70kg/154lbs OHP 60kg/132lbs Deadlift 80kg/176lbs (only started training this in February)
I've access to a pull up bar, heavy sandbags (60kg/132lbs max) and a 3inch dumbell with up to 40kg/88lbs of plates.
No results in legs, help! (Also, need some overall advice on stuffs)
I've been bodybuilding for about a year now and i've been noticing some gains here and there except for my legs. I'm not getting anywhere when it comes to squats or legs overall, especially not calves. My technique isn't at its best when it comes to squats but people aren't complaining, I mean they did when I was a beginner, yet I feel that smth is wrong. Anyhow, I also might consider a whole new program since mine is pretty much "made-up", I've been following programs before but they didn't fit in to my personal schedule.
- Any help is appriciated
My family consider me "skinny" in some way, but yet somehow my friends complement me on how buffed I look and I am above average when it comes to looking "fit" from a personal perspektive and im around 8-10% in bf. Still something wrong with my legs tho.
Parenting Expectations
When you think about parent expectations what comes mind? Do you think about what your life will be like? Do you think about how a baby will affect your relationship or marriage? Do you think about what fatherhood will be like? Do you think about what fatherhood will do to you and for you? Will being a father bring out the best in you? Do you think about how you will respond to the challenges of fatherhood because your own childhood was less than ideal?
These and many other questions are appropriate to ponder because they will affect how your parent. It will also affect your marriage because of the different upbringings.
Because your world is about to be rocked or has been rocked for sometime now I have provided five practical tips to approach your new role as you become a Superdad.
- Read books and watch videos about parenting and more specifically being a father.
There are several types of good resources from well-known experts who have written books. I would also suggest watching some TEDTalks in the education category. It is mostly directed to educators but many of the principals can be applied to parenting.
- Spend time with more experienced parents and professionals.
You can learn a lot from people watching so I suggest taking mental notes. Write things down. Have discussions with experienced parents. Seek out support groups and classes. Your community is likely to have these groups and classes.
- Have ongoing discussions with your partner about your fears, hopes, desires, and expectations about being a parent.
The two of you should probably talk about how you were parented. There is bound to be differences and it is important to have ongoing discussions. Talk to each other about what you expect and how you will tackle this new adventure of parenthood.
- Remember you are not the babysitter or a backup parent.
Dads remember you are an equal partner in raising your child. Don’t allow other to devalue your role as a dad. Your role is just as important as the mothers. Take control and define your own role as a father. As a dad you will face challenges and issues no babysitter would want to face. So being a Superdad and be there for the most rewarding experience you will ever receive.
- Allow for mistakes and learn from them.
You are not perfect and will make mistakes. Young children are generally very forgiving and forget easily. It is important to forgive yourself and ask yourself what you can learn from the mistake.
EMSKR How to read the subtext of a conversation
I'm terrible at it. I'm finding it might be costing me in my job. Missing the subtext of a conversation in business can cost you a lot, and I seem to be particularly bad at it.
How do I balance a marathon training with the wish to build muscle? 2m/6,6ft 65kg/143pounds
Hey guys,
this is my situation:
I'm 2,02 metres tall with around 65kg. My diet is a very strict whole food plant based vegan one (no shitty vegan products, hardly any processed foods - mostly fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds) (I did however use a plant based protein powder)
Now, I've done martial arts for around 10 months and haven't seen much increase in strength. The performance increase was there but I still looked as thin as I do now. Then I got injured, had to pause for 3 months and now I'm back, starting at 0 again.
My goal is to have a nice enough body for the girl I have a crush on while also being able to defend myself and finish a (half-marathon first) marathon in the near future.
I'm a very competitive person (studying 3 bachelor programs at once) and used to do Martial Arts 5+ times a week. As of now I have paused martial arts for 3+ months as I want to return stronger.
As of now I run about 5 times a week but I'm unsure how to build muscle for martial arts that might also tend to look good. Is it even possible or will I just burn all of those muscles by running at most days?
What am I missing? What advice would you give me? Help!
Greetings
EMSKR: How to handle your emotions
I've always heard stuff like "Don't bottle up your emotions."
But it's always felt implied that I actually should bottle them up. Or at least find somewhere to put them. I don't know what to do with strong emotions. Usually I just clam up even more than usual until it dies down enough to move on, but I find that it's mostly all still there and just piles up.
The only suggestions I've really heard before are either journaling or various kinds of physical activities (weight lifting, boxing stuff, etc.), but those don't seem to help with the actual emotions.
A lot of useful info on this subreddit to help me grow the winter beard. Just mixed my own beard oil today thanks to you guys!
Anyway, here is today after patiently growing it out for a month. I do have patchy cheeks and missing goatee connectors but I'm hopeful to get to a full and thick beard in a couple of months. What do you think?
Should I also start grooming/trimming or wait it out another month at least??
Before and after a trim
Decided to use my beard to my advantage this Halloween.
Conditioners?
For background - I've kept a beard at about 1/2 inch for years, and only recently begun experimenting with growing it out a bit. My facial hair, untreated, has the texture of steel wool. It's easier to grow it out than to shave, but some sort of conditioner or balm is a good idea if I don't want it to be abrasive to anyone who touches it.
I was a loyal user of Bluebeard's Original for a long time, because I liked the scent. Most of the balms I'd tried were just too overpowering, or seemed to stay oily in the beard. But its cream conditioner consistency seemed to soften the hair without being an oil that clung to the beard.
But they've changed the formula within the last year, and the last three jars I've ordered have all had a strange mildewy note to the scent.
I interacted with them about it a bit, sent them a bad jar after they offered to replace it if it actually had gone bad, and then I didn't hear from them. I bought one more to be certain and, yes, it still had a foul note under the lime that they apparently don't detect, so I have to assume that's just the scent of the new formula, and they don't notice it, but I do. I need to be done with it.
So...what sort of conditioners or balms do you gentlemen use? I'm looking for something lightly scented that softens the beard a bit, but doesn't stay an oil that rubs off on the fingers.
Thanks.
Please check it out and donate if possible. It's for a great cause. The irish cancer society and mens health.
Help beardbros!
Hey bros, I decided three weeks ago to throw my razer and stop growing a beard. After a few negotiations with my woman she accepted to support me even though she doesn't like the idea ( she doesnt dislike it neither but sheÄs more eskeptic ). She gave me a condition, I can grow it but I need to make it softer, she is extremely sensible and it hurts her everytime we cuddle or kiss and she told me to groom it properly and deal. I need help from you boys because apart from BeardBrand here in Europe I don't find many companies with nice Oils, Softeners and grooming stuff, economically speaking, because I find BeardBrand a bit costy compared to some products some of you guys get in the States or Canada ! Any European/German Beardbro can tell me where they shop for their stuff would be really, really helpful !
Thanks in advance. if requests I'll post beard progression
It's cool, it's only for a month...
I literally look like a baby without a spartan beard.
Greetings from /r/asatru
Never grown a real named beard before. Given my limited spots, what's a good style to try?
Basically I'm 25, and after a month it seems to come in okay.. The mustache is weak, and the worst spot is the front of my chin. It comes in very little immediately under my bottom lip, and then nothing for a finger width to the middle of my chin, and then it's strong from there south. Also the mustache does not connect to the beard. So it's like a little U shape of no hair around my bottom lip.
If I shave the mustache because it's already kind of weak, it looks very Amish. And i'm just not into that. So what do you recommend? I can submit a picture later when I'm not at work if I need to.
It sucks that even if nothing else came in, the chin seems the be the most important part. And I can do everything but.
At 25 years old, I'm losing my facial hair.
I believe I have alopecia areata. 12 months ago, I noticed patches missing from the hair on my face. WebMD said it would last 3-6 months and stress plays a big role in its onset. I've since taken care of the most stressful aspects of my life, got a better job, started eating healthier, and I'm working out a lot more. Still no results at all. So today, after doing more research on treatments, I'm going to try minoxidil.
Has anyone else had this sort of problem? If so, what did you do to get your beard back?
Has anybody else tried the Squat Everyday Split for powerlifting?
I'm no one special and I am in no way an expert in these things. I'm just a squat fanatic and have been squatting everyday from day one. I originally started with olympic lifting, so squatting everyday felt normal, now I've just carried it on into powerlifting. It works for me so I've just stuck with it!
I see that Cory Gregory actually did an article earlier this year about it and even included a program, it seems to be growing in popularity so I was curious as to what everyone's thoughts were...both from those that do it and from those that don't and why etc.
What do you like/dislike about it? What have you found to be the pros and cons? If you have chosen not to try it, why is that? And with regards to nutrition, what sort of diet have you implemented with this regime? :)
Would love to hear your thoughts!
My three month old and I off to work. What are yall's honest opinions of anything that needs work?
First time grower, apprehensive about my cheeks after 1 month.
Let me start by saying you all have some bitchin beards that I'm incredibly envious of. My family, especially my dads side, aren't notorious for facial hair...just thick ass topiaries on top of our skulls.
Being the proud owner of a beard has been a goal of mine for some time now, and I'm finally in a job that will allow me to grow it out. I'm still in the baby stages and want to make sure that there is actually potential for a sweet beard in the future. Right now I'd probably pass for a mangey pirate.
Thanks for the feedback!
EMSKR: Attending parties when you don't enjoy attending parties
I've been invited to a Halloween party at a place I really don't enjoy being. I'm not a party guy as it is, certainly an introvert. This is a party my girlfriend wants me to attend because I've never been a social butterfly and she wants me to go with her. It is a family event, where her uncle will host the festivities in his garage converted to a bar. That by itself is a challenge. But her uncle and the attendees are raging alcoholics who are cut from a cloth I am not. I offered to go and find a quiet niche with people sharing my disposition, but was told that the house is flea infested.
I do not want to go, I have told her this and stand by it, but I know that sometimes you just have to do things you don't want to do. How do you survive being at a party that is at odds with everything you are "about"?
Arm hair thickened after lack of wash
I went through a surgery after break my left arm scaphoid bone and it was immobilized with a splint for the past three months. I've just remove the splint and I noticed that my arm hair is thicker than it was. I already read about to don't wash the face/beard to the facial hair become thicker, but didn't knew if it was true. Well, as you can see in the picture, there is some difference between my left and right arm/hand.
The splint was replaced every 2 weeks, and my arm was washed with water and glycerin soap in these gaps, that's the result: my arms
Don't know if it's doable with beards, but it's an interesting unpredictable experience
Has oils made your beard naturally soft over time or is your beard only soft when applying oil?
I would love it where after using oil for a few months that I could go a day or two without using oils and still have a soft beard. By using oils every day will it make your beard naturally soft, or will it only be soft when using oil?
Also, I have a pretty course beard right now. So right now it's kind of a course-soft, Will always be like this or is there a chance it could be more hair-soft?
Thanks in advanced
My beard growing brethren, I have two words for you: Jojoba Oil
This shit is seriously amazing. My facial hair was causing my already dry skin to flake more often than I wanted. This oil may have completely corrected the issue. Im seeing a better sheen and overall improvement to the softness of my beard as well as a solid moisturizing compensation. Its pretty cheap (I bought a 4 fl oz bottle at GNC for 7 bucks) and has surpassed several beard oils Ive bought online. The only drawback is it doesn't smell like oak or cedar. Keep growing, everyone.
My Take on GZCL
This is my first topic post here. I discovered the GZCL method through Reddit so I thought I post this here.
I have been working on my own version of the GZCL to run after my meet. I will run it with a power building method in mind. I kept T3 exercises non-specific and focus more on hitting the specific muscle group. The deadlift day I might have to adjust once I run the program. I pull sumo... and high reps or high volume makes my hips super sore. So I kinda setup with what I think I can handle.
Any tips... critiques and or suggestions.
Obligatory how am I doing post
I can't say how much time it has as I haven't shaved for just under a year, but I've been trimming on a fairly regular basis up to a couple months ago. Since those few years ive just been clipping the stray hairs and any split ends i incurred from being out of oil. My cheeks have always produced little or no hair, so I've decided to see if it will fill in. Currently using dollar beard club's oil and balm, along with their brush. Prior to that I've only had a plastic comb and a local made oil. Any other products you fine gents would recommend? Also, I know people claim both sides of the myth, but are there any balms/oils that genuinely do increase growth speed and fullness?
Hey guys!! Need some beard grooming advice!
Hello fellow bearded men! I just need some advice. First of all, I worked at Carl's Jr for almost 3 years and I quit my job recently for a much better one. Im telling you this because my past job required me to be clean shaven. For a man that can grow a full on beard in four days, it's pretty sad... and painful for my wallet and face. (fucking razors are expensive).
Many perks came with leaving your job... One of my favorites is finally being able to grow out my beard. Fuck yea! However I don't really know how to keep keep it clean if I chose to grow it out. I'm pretty hairy, so if I don't shave it, it grows all wild and goes pretty far down my neck where my adams apple is.
Its my first time posting here. So if anyone has any advice on how to maintenance a full grown beard and how to make it look clean just please let me know. Thanks in advance for the feedback.
edit: Sorry, What I'm pretty much asking is, How do you keep it long but still make it look clean? My hair is super thick and grows like crazy. Thanks.
What should I do to make my beard look better?
Am I doing it right?
Ok so this is the first time I've tried growing a beard. I never thought I could because of the space where my cheek meets my chin that doesn't seem to grow hair....sucks but this is the beard I was dealt and I'm gonna play it.
I wanted anyone with experience to let me know if I'm trimming my neck line to much or too little. I intend on growing it too a full beard. Most likely gonna keep it around 6" but who knows.
I know too much trimming is a big no no with beards, especially this early on, so I hesitate when I shave my neck. However I don't want to be letting hair grow that I should be trimming. Other than shaving the neck and trimming the mustache with scissors just around the lip line, I havnt cut it at all.
Glad to join the beard community! Never thought I could grow one but I'm happy I was wrong. I've been drinking and now I'm starting to ramble...so I'll stop.
Crash / physical impact Resistance...
Hey guys.
This is gonna be a little wierd one - but stay with me. I won't spend time to describe my sport. It's Swooping freestyle - Look it up on YT if you desire.
Long story short: I need to be able to resist crashes on water and ground. (Just in case - to avoid major injuries) Training to get better does sometimes include crashing at high speeds...
I'm in a rather good shape (160 pounds - 5 foot 10ish. former gymnast. But I need to get strong without getting too big.
The solution is pretty obvious like: Exercise, Stretch bla bla bla.
But I was just thinking if you guys have some kind of way of builing a strong and flexible body?
Shoot! Thanks!
Having a good beard day
1.5 months. Not sure about it.
I need some support my bearded brothers. This is my first time growing it out. I am at about 1.5 months of growth. I am also having a problem with the area right under my ears. The hair seems to be going in all directions; the way in which it seems to kind of want to go is up toward my ear. Most of the time it is sticking out and going in all directions. What should I do?
About half way to my yeard first time growing it out.
No beard is too manly for a cup of tea
Two weeks in...
Good evening from the UK my bearded brothers.
Two weeks in keeping the neck clean... What do you think? Slightly mental with the shaved head? I'm a big, tall guy so slightly conscious of my outgoing appearance! Saying that, at an airport walking to my gate today, two smoking hot girls, smiled and blushed at me... This honestly never happens! Power of the beard?
Anyway, just looking for some encouragement and words of wisdom!
Peace!
Which is better - Scented or unscented beard oil?
EMSK how to phrase certain things politely
So I've been thinking bout this a bit lately. Before there's 50 comments saying every man doesn't need to know this, you're certainly right. I just think it's interesting to think about and if one person gains anything outta this post it's worth it.
So certain phrases can come off as harsh or greedy or polite. That's really it all comes down to. I'll give you two examples that I did.
One: me and a friend had two beers opened. One for each. They were his beers; so I wanted to drink and wanted to ask which was mine. But instead if saying "which is mine?" I said "which is yours?" The focus isn't on me, but him. After all, it's his beers.
Two: a girl is dressing up for this weekend. A particularly hard costume. I want to say "it'll be great if you pull it off." But that's doubting her. So I say "it'll be great when you pull it off." The if and when make a big difference. It doesn't doubt her, which is true. I know she's gonna pull it off.
So this may be common sense or not, idfk. You may say this is too much analysis for little meaning, but I find it interesting and consequently shared.
Do we need to scratch our beard when we wash it or condition it?
I'm wondering because I don't know if we can get dry skins if we do not do it, but at the same time I don't want to have patchy spot by scratching it and removing some hairs.
Making the most out of movember for non-bearder
Hello! 22 years old here and i've previously been unable to grow a beard. I've got facial hair at my sideburns, chin and stache. They don't connect.
I've done some research now before MoVember because i thought that i'd join in this year, no matter what i end up with or how much of a perv i'll look like with my little stache. I'd like some thoughts and comments on what i've found:
Scrub: From what i've found, dead skin cells and random shit could potentially clog up your face which would lead to difficulties in growing a beard. A scrub would clean up your face and would make your skin healthier.
Moisturizer: This would be good in combination with the above mentioned scrub. I do see the benefits of this one, moist skin and healthier skin etc etc, but are there no possibilities that this would clog up your face instead of the old shit that the scrub removes?
Biotin: There are discussion on a cascade of different forums and different forumers have been reporting different results so i thought to myself why not? Might as well try it. I'll start with 300ug three times per day. (I already take Zinc for bodybuilding-reasons which could also have some benefits for your facial hair)
What do you guys think of this?
(I know that it's the beard on the inside that counts, not the one on the outside)
Feeling a bit lost about it lately... Need some tips/opinions and suggestions of what do or dont.
5 months in today and I couldn't be happier. What do y'all think?
Knots in beard
So I have a really curly beard, its fairly thick too, and because of this I gets knots in it a lot. Which can get annoying. I use beard oil once every other day. But my question is, does anyone else on here have this problem? Or some recommendations to help me reduce the knots in my beard?
It happened to me, it could happen to you. Alopecia of the beard.
This is a word of warning. I wasn't aware this could happen, but it did and it has made me sad.
I am 25, and in the past few months I've developed the condition alopecia areata barbae, an autoimmune disease which targets the follicles of the beard, causing them to stop growing and making the beard patchy. It's the mildest form of alopecia by far, affecting only the beard, and it comes and goes.
Right now I have 4 major bald patches, and several smaller ones. One of the major patches has started regrowth, but the hair is coming in white now, and white hairs have appeared randomly scattered throughout the beard. Keep in mind I am a young man, and already cursed with early male pattern baldness.
I'm writing this post as a sort of eulogy. I loved my beard, I oiled and trimmed and pampered it, and as a bald man I made my luscious black beard my defining feature. And now it's dead, a patchy salt-n-pepper mess.
It could happen to you. My doctor says it's genetically linked, but also seems random, striking people of any age and background. He says it may be stress related, but he isn't sure. He also said there's a miniscule chance it spreads, becoming one of the more severe forms of alopecia that effect the scalp or the whole body and become permanent.
So cherish your beard while you have it, you might not always.
