Need some advice on strength training

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to strength training, I've been doing it for just over 6 months now and I've been lifting in general for almost 3 years. This is something that is majorly holding me back, and i need to give the full background and brace myself for the roast if I'm ever going to get some good advice my way.

about 2 months ago i went for some physio because i had been having like a nagging feeling in my right elbow which i worked through in the gym. it started to creep into my daily life so i decided id sort it out. physio basically told me that i had a tricep tendon injury and to rest it for 6-8 weeks, by the 6 week mark i wasn't getting any pain at all, so i thought id go back to benching. incline bench felt great but when i tried flat it didn't feel great (not that bad) and boom, what do you know. a few days later the old pain is back. as to why the injury happened, id love it if someone could have a look at what i was doing and see if they think it had anything to do with it.

what i was doing was basically the following in whatever order i felt like. i made it up completely myself because i enjoyed it so much and was lifting really heavy pretty quick. i would normally do all of these days in a week, so i was going 4 days a week. i would usually throw in a few higher rep sets of accessory stuff at the end e.g flies on chest day or a few curls on back day. i tended to leave out arms days because I'm more into compound stuff and they're doing fine.

*chest 5x5, flat bench, incline bench, light dips

*deadlift/back 5x5, deadlift, t bar row, pull ups, lat pulldown

*shoulder/tricep 5x5, OHP, heavy dips, shoulder db press, (then some tricep isolation or face pulls) *legs 5x5, squat, front squat, leg press, (then curl and extension machines)

would really appreciate any thoughts.

TLDR: have a look at the program i posted and tell me if its why i got injured, and what would i have to change.

EMSK how to become a leader

You need to know how to lead before your first real job. It's a huge monumental quality every man should have.

Many people leave school not knowing how to do this, and that's where most think that college won't get you anywhere. That's not true. You spent two, four, six, or whatever years it took to get your degree in lieu of experiences in the workforce. You're smarter than a majority of people, but at a sacrifice. Unless you are a social butterfly and have a great career ahead of you, for people like me who didn't really socialize that much or didn't have a father who shared his wisdom, this might only have a few parts that'll apply to you. Take whatever is valuable to you and use it. It's an amalgamation of the things I wish someone told me sooner so I could've worked on mastering it.

Figure out what a good leader means to you. It's important because you'll have direct reports. If you don't, you're someone else's. You'll always be on a "team." You can't escape that reality, and you'll only leave because you're looking for a good leader. You'll quit the job second to quitting your shithead boss.

I'm paraphrasing, "A great manager has to be a good leader. A good leader is one that's in the trenches, gets his hands dirty, is there to support, and develop." This is a common sentiment I've heard so many times. My idea of a good leader aligns with this thought: A good leader is much like a good parent - they're there to watch over you and take care of you. Think of your life in totality and how you've grown up. Think of the times you've rebelled and yet your parents were still there. Think of the GFs you've brought over and how they helped you with your first car, date, prom, and when they sent you to higher education. And when you landed a job, they cheered you on for entering the workforce and being self-sufficient. If this sounds like you, this post is to the fresh out of college people.

Once you have that awareness, analyze how you interact. Social skills are a must.

The best way to put it is whether or not you can tell a good story or entertain someone. How can you capture attention? You can practice this if you're super awkward, and some people go well into their thirties and forties being extremely awkward from what I've seen. Gauge where you stand on how well you can tell a joke, say hi, listen, say bye, invite others to an outing, and so on. Leave your ego at the door for this. If you can't capture attention, think psychology. Are you interjecting at the wrong times to fill in this gap or silence? Are you dressed a certain way to respond to this anxiety? The last thing you want to do is to call attention on not being heard, because that's annoying. Be cool, as in spend little energy to do this. Don't go in guns blazing and interject to get attention.

Do people say hi to you first, verbally? This is a good indicator of where you stand. If they do, they want to meet you. You can control your body language and force them to say hi (most of the time) and not be annoying about it. Let it come about in a cool way where you aren't forcing others to like you. A great way to test yourself is at a bar. It's busy. How fast can you get a drink without waving your wallet and whistling the bartender down? You can convey that you want a drink or that you want to say hi or whatever it is by looking interested in them, the other.

After you have an awareness, which consists of reflection and seeing where you stand, work on it. Make these speeches, these little hellos, the small talks, and whatevers your own little personal victories.

There are many tools or diagrams or psychological stuff out there, but the best way to sum it up is respect. How do you want to be treated is how you need to show it. Maybe what you know isn't easy to get for the other person? Have you had a time where someone assumed you should've known? I've had lots of them. It's called: misunderstandings.

There are four types of people. A beginner, intermediate, advanced, and master. People respond in different ways. You need to diagnose and mate your leadership by---

Beginner : holding their hand.
Intermediate : reassuring, but start to give them keys and lots of support for failure.
Advanced : motivating the hell out of them, be competitive.
Masters : being direct as possible with high confidence in them.

I've summarized an 8 hour class for you by the way. It's Situational Leadership. They call it many things. It's all the same. They give this to managers in workplaces. You need to be flexible and not treat everyone the same way, otherwise it creates disharmony and lots of shit talking. The situational aspect is that a master can be a rookie in other areas, and the cycle starts again. You lead by supporting their needs, that's pretty much it!

As a leader, recognize it and respond accordingly. Your presences does indeed make a difference, so step it up and use the things I've talked about to go from zero to hero. It doesn't happen in a day, but if you can do this through habit, it becomes natural and this means you're ready to become a great manager where people will leave the job with you. They'll work for you and love every moment. They won't care about pay because they are valued.

To summarize: don't be awkward. Figure out your team. Support the shit out of them. Then you have their buy-in. You'll barely have to lift a finger to get things done once you've helped everyone establish this relationship with you.

Startup looking for market feedback

I'm working on a startup for athletic trainers of high level athletes. My product maps the how an athlete distributes pressure on the foot over training or during play. I have a few questions for you all. Any other feedback is welcome as well. * Do you see value in the ability to determine foot placement and pressures in your athletes? * Would a heat map (similar to that of the Dr. Sholls foot mappers at Walmart) over the time be effective in accomplishing this goal? * If so, how useful would it be? * How much would you be willing to pay for a product that accomplishes this? * How long would you expect this product to last? * Is there any related additional information that would make this product more useful? If so, what?

EMSK about "Black Death" Henry Johnson and "White Death" Simo Häyhä.

http://ift.tt/1peM1HB

http://ift.tt/1OCzKkX

...Just after 2 a.m., Johnson heard the “snippin’ and clippin’ ” of wirecutters on the perimeter fence and told Roberts to run back to camp to let the French troops know there was trouble. Johnson then hurled a grenade toward the fence, which brought a volley of return gunfire from the Germans, as well as enemy grenades. Roberts didn’t get far before he decided to return to help Johnson fight, but he was hit with a grenade and wounded too badly in his arm and hip to do any fighting. Johnson had him lie in the trench and hand him grenades, which the Albany native threw at the Germans. But there were too many enemy soldiers, and they advanced from every direction; Johnson ran out of grenades. He took German bullets in the head and lip but fired his rifle into the darkness. He took more bullets in his side, then his hand, but kept shooting until he shoved an American cartridge clip into his French rifle and it jammed.

By now, the Germans were on top of him. Johnson swung his rifle like a club and kept them at bay until the stock of his rifle splintered; then he went down with a blow to his head. Overwhelmed, he saw that the Germans were trying to take Roberts prisoner. The only weapon Johnson had left was a bolo knife, so he climbed up from the ground and charged, hacking away at the Germans before they could get clean shot at him.

...He stabbed one German in the stomach, felled a lieutenant, and took a pistol shot to his arm before driving his knife between the ribs of a soldier who had climbed on his back. Johnson managed to drag Roberts away from the Germans, who retreated as they heard French and American forces advancing. When reinforcements arrived, Johnson passed out... By daylight, the carnage was evident: Johnson had killed four Germans and wounded an estimated 10 to 20 more. Even after suffering 21 wounds in hand-to-hand combat, Henry Johnson had prevented the Germans from busting through the French line.

“There wasn’t anything so fine about it,” he said later. “Just fought for my life. A rabbit would have done that.”

Later the entire French force in Champagne lined up to see the two Americans receive their decorations: the Croix du Guerre, France’s highest military honor. They were the first American privates to receive it. Johnson’s medal included the coveted Gold Palm, for extraordinary valor.

...He died, destitute, in 1929 at age 32.

Read more at http://ift.tt/OUW2af There is currently some efforts to get him the Medal of Honor. His estranged son was a fighter pilot with the Tuskegee airmen, who found his father's grave at the ANC in 2001.

During the Winter War (1939–1940) between Finland and the Soviet Union, Häyhä served as a sniper for the Finnish Army against the Red Army. Häyhä has been credited with 505 sniper kills. All of Häyhä's kills were accomplished in fewer than 100 days – an average of just over five kills per day – at a time of year with very few daylight hours.

He preferred iron sights over telescopic sights as to present a smaller target for the enemy (a sniper must raise his head higher when using a telescopic sight), to increase accuracy (a telescopic sight's glass can fog up easily in cold weather), and to aid in concealment (sunlight glare in telescopic sight lenses can reveal a sniper's position). As well as these tactics, he frequently packed dense mounds of snow in front of his position to conceal himself, provide padding for his rifle and reduce the characteristic puff of snow stirred up by the muzzle blast. He was also known to keep snow in his mouth whilst sniping, to prevent steamy breaths giving away his position in the cold air.

...on March 6, 1940, Häyhä was hit by an explosive bullet in his lower left jaw by a Russian soldier, blowing off his lower left cheek. He was picked up by fellow soldiers who said "half his face was missing", but he did not die, regaining consciousness on March 13, the day peace was declared.

It took several years for Häyhä to recuperate from his wound. The bullet had crushed his jaw and blown off his left cheek. Nonetheless, he made a full recovery and became a successful moose hunter and dog breeder after World War II.

When asked in 1998 how he had become such a good shooter, Häyhä answered "Practice." When asked if he regretted killing so many people, he said, "I only did my duty, and what I was told to do, as well as I could."

http://ift.tt/21wSI5x

EMSK what beard oil is and how to not be a retard or pussy while using it.

After reading the feminist basically call all of us retarded I thought I would begin our trek back to manhood with a posy about beard oil. Beard oil is often used in beards and mustaches for fragrance and shine. As well as other uses, I use some brands as chest and ass beard oil as well. So here are a few oils that I currently use that you should use to help wrangle yourself some vaginas.

Generic: The Dollar Beard Company. The DBC has been around for a couple years and has a low price. Unfortunately you get what you pay for in beard oil. Their formula changed around the New Year. There's less cedar and all of the notes seem to be diluted. It's good though especially for chest and ass beards.

High End: Brooklyn Grooming sells many different beard oils. They are rich and full. They carry a faint scent of oils such as hempseed and sesame. The quality of oil is evident in the deep color and texture.

Local Favorite: My personal favorite is the handmade oils created by The Calico Beard and Mercantile company in KCMO. This oil is luscious, highly fragrant and drops panties faster than Grandpa's M16 spits brass. There are strong notes of black licorice, juniper, peppermint and even a hint of cinnamon. This is a high quality oil that smells too good to be true. Take it easy on this one it's very aromatic. You don't need much.

Okay now you have some options. The next step is application. Make sure to shower and shampoo your beard. Towel dry until barely damp. Place dime size (depending on quality aka size of beard) on palm of hand and rub together. Start from underneath and work your fingers through the beard to the top. Then using the base of your palms start at the top and rub oil into beard. Trial and error always works from here out.

This is just an example of some of the beard oils I use to make myself more manly. I love all-natural men's bath, body and fashion included life's accessories. If anyone wants tips, tricks or ideas on how to be a more refined, trendy or manly gentleman I'd be happy to help.

If the article or information you have to share finds itself centered around any of the above, odds are it's something men should know, and should stay on /r/everymanshouldknow

I mean, God forbid there's no man available to respond to a gas station fire, or a single female homeowner wants to know how secure her home is, or if a mother wants to keep her children's heights with her, or be thankful for a phone worker's time, or a woman wants to defeat negative thoughts. Can a woman take advantage of this knowledge also? /r/youshouldknow is right there, and with more people that could use the information.

EMSK: "The Terrific Threes"

Remember the Terrific Three's of Situation Awareness.

Some say two will be good enough. I say, why not three?

  • Three primary exits like brick walls to plow through or open doors and windows (pet shops always have an exit leading to a restaurant kitchen in developing countries)

  • Three improvised weapons (if not - that girl next to you has pepper spray on her keychain)

  • Three improvised medical items (tampon or Scotch tape or that Walmart plastic bag)

  • Three closest cities to the building, and their approximate distance from each other according to Google Maps (based on current traffic)

  • Three people with etch-a-sketches

  • If there are no people with etch-a-sketches, decide where people with etch-a-sketches would enter, where they would go and what they would do if they showed up

  • Your three favorite colors for body bags (remember, black is not a color!)

Doing this greatly increases your chance of surviving a:

  • Medical emergency (such as paper cuts or your GF getting her period)
  • Active-couch-potato (it isn't always the fat kid and it isn't always just in the USA)
  • Rob Stewart
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Nucular war
  • Having just two of things
  • Other situations that I cannot speak off, or I'd have to kill you

EMSK: "The Terrific Twos"

Remember the Terrific Two's of Situation Awareness.

Every time you walk into a room or area notice the Terrific Twos

  • Two primary exits like doors or open windows (restaurant kitchens always have an exit in developed countries)

  • Two secondary exits like thin drywall, a closed window,

  • Two improvised weapons

  • Two improvised medical items (non-leather belt for tourniquet and a butter knife for the windless, your shirt, duct tape and plastic bag)

  • Two closest intersecting streets to the building

  • Two sketchy people

  • If there are no sketchy people, decide where sketchy people would enter, where they would go and what they would do if they showed up

    • Example: Filling up at the gas station, a car idling in drive outside of the store, not in a parking place, with a hooded man walking into it quickly.

Doing this greatly increases your chance of surviving a:

  • Medical emergency

  • Active-killer (it isn't always guns and it isn't always just in the USA)

  • Robbery

  • Assault/brawl

  • Other situations that can lead to you rapidly assuming room temperature

Start practicing today and in a month it'll be second nature!

Starting out strength training

Let's say I am untrained and naturally weak person. Do you think it is better to start training with 8-12 reps (hyperthropy) for couple months to gain muscle mass before doing strength training with lower reps & heavier weights? My thought process is that why focus mainly on nerve activity (strength training) when you barely have muscle cells. Also would prevent any early injuries and learn techniques easier since moving bit lighter weights.

EMSK: How To Never Be Late

Men are dependable, reliable, and consistent. Providers are never late. Being unreliable and late is very unmanly. Coming late and coming up with pansy excuses for your lateness is worse. No matter how trivial the case, ALWAYS strive to be early. Below are just a few things I incorporate and it has helped me tremendously. Feel free to drop some more advice.

Prepare for tomorrow before going to sleep. Pick out your clothes for tomorrow ahead of time. Have paperwork, folders, car keys and other materials already organized for work/school in the morning. There is no reason to stress in the morning looking for a misplaced item.

Type your destination on your GPS Navigation service It will likely tell you how long it will take to get to your destination. Give yourself AT LEAST an extra 50% window. This should cover for a sudden increase in traffic, missing an exit, or anything that happens. If it takes 30 minutes get to destination X, leave AT LEAST 45 minutes before you have to be there (30*1.5=45).

Always have a plan upon arriving early If using the above advice you should always be early. If going to a doctors appointment early, bring a book with you. Reading a book is better than twiddling your thumbs or staring at your phone. It is also a good conversation piece. If meeting up for a first date, or with friends at a bar, you should always be the first one there. Go to the bar, order a drink and go start a conversation with someone (another male preferably, if waiting on your date). Just a biased opinion on my part. I cannot stand people slouched down staring at their phone for long periods of time. Screams prepubescent/unmanly.

You will be late sometimes, plan accordingly Nobody is perfect and circumstances do happen. If late to work, you will apologize to your boss and tell them it won't happen again. Do not give petty excuses unless you have a doctors note. NOBODY cares about your excuse. If you know you will be late, call the people your are meeting and tell them you will be late. You are not "on your way" or "almost there." You are approximately 10, 20, 30, etc minutes late (round up).

Unless you are the lord of a multi-generational manor, don't mark your children's growth on some door jam. If you ever move you will be leaving behind a chunk of their childhoods.

An ideal solution is some piece of light coloured, quality hardwood. A pole is nice as you can then make the marks easily go all the way around and poles are just cooler than some slab of wood.

I have moved into more than one house where I felt really bad painting over these predecessor marks.

EMSK What it means to be a father

I think it is very important for use to know what it means to be a father, for everyman. You may not think so if you don't have kids, but think about if you are an uncle or have a younger work friend you mentor, I.e. playing a father figure role in someone's life and may not even be aware.

Basically, be mindful of what you do and what you say, as well as the promises you make.

Know that your actions make a lasting impression on a young mind and to always take that into consideration.

Put down the phone or take a break from work and play and engage with your child, this is your investment in the world and if you can't take care of your self later in life, your own future.

Dedicate the time to ensure you do your best to make your child better than you are, we can all use smarter more courteous and level headed people in the world.

If you don't know an answer to a question than look it up with your child to both show that it's OK if you don't know something and how to find the answer.

Don't over protect your child let them get hurt and make mistakes within reason, this is how we learn and get better.

Realize that your child is an human being and is Going to make stupid decisions and do things you don't agree with, make suggestions to them about how you would do or handle things and let them learn in their own.

If you have a daughter be the man you want her to be with, and if you have a son be the man that he will tell his grandkids about.

Realize just because they aren't biologically related to you doesn't mean you can't be a father to them.

EMSKR: How to be a bridesmaid as a guy? (X-post /r/everywomanshouldknow)

So my sister is getting married in a few weeks, and due to a falling out with one of her best friends (apparently her wife is best friends with the sisters ex) I've been asked to stand up with her.

I've never played a part in a wedding at all and definitely not as a bridesmaid.

Is there anything I should know, 9r stand there and be supportive?

EMSKR What to do when you car gets towed?

I've searched Reddit for help on this but my issue seems to be a little more specific...

I did a stupid thing and left my car at my work parking lot for too long and it was towed. The car can only be driven for very short distances (5 - 10 miles, it doesn't hold coolant) and I was working with my local NPR station to donate the thing.

I made several mistakes in not taking care of it sooner. Anyway. My car was towed a few weeks ago. The guy I talked with at the towing company wants me to give him $500+ to take the car off my hands. Which is a lot of money for a crap car and the towing company gets to KEEP it.

Just wondering what my options are at this point.

EMSKR: Weddings and Marriage

So I tried searching for this topic in this thread and the only thing that came up was really about rings. I am looking for something more along the lines of what to do and how to prepare not only weddings and but getting married. What documents would you need to prepare together with your spouse, marriage licenses, getting a healthcare plan together, 401k's, bank accounts, housing, etc.

Even for the wedding part, as a man what should one do to get himself not just physically prepared but mentally prepared as well.

EMSKR: Styling and maintaining your hair

Hey y'all, I'm twenty year old college man who never knew what to do hair wise. I've been getting my hair trimmed ever month and half for the past two years and that's about it. I've been using hair spray to keep my hair down all my life but that only works for 15 min maybe. My biggest questions are how often do most men get their hair cut, how to make sure you're getting the best haircut, and any big styling tips I've missed like maybe a type of gel I should use. Thanks guys!

EMSKR: How to write the best Valentine's Day card

Since Valentine's Day is coming up, I am preparing a gift for my girlfriend. Any advice on what I should write in the card I'm giving to her? What kind of stuff will melt her heart? I want this card to be special and one that she keeps for a long time. I know it should come from my heart, but any general suggestions about what I should say would be greatly appreciated.

Should I get lifting shoes/belt/kneewraps?

My goals are general functionality - strength, athleticism etc, not competition or bragging etc. My lifting program revolves around squats, deadlifts and powercleans, along with pullups/rows/dips etc. I know a lifting belt, shoes and kneewraps should increase my squat/deadlift etc, but given I don't so much care about the numbers but more about general, functional strength, are these items worth getting or will they weaken me in the long run, by stopping my core, knees etc strengthening?

Squat form question

Hi guys,

So I started SL 5x5 about a month ago and I'm starting to get to weight that starting to get heavy and just wanted to make sure that my form is ok so that I don't hurt anything. I read in another post that video is the best way so here it is. Any comments on whether I'm doing ok would be greatly appreciated.

https://vid.me/KimT

Also I do not have any pain when I am working out but have started noticing when I sit in a chair for longer periods of time my knees start to hurt. Any idea what is causing this and what I should do.

Thanks for the help in advance

Training frequency on 5X5; AKA Is there a reason you rest for 2 days in a row or...

All the research that I have done says the frequency of training days is:

A > off > B > off > A > off > off

B > off > A > off > B > off > off

But this means that there are FIVE days between the second A day and the third. Same for the third and fourth B days.

Is there a reason for such a long break on the 5X5 or could one change this up and simply do an:

"A > off > B > off" wash rinse repeat so that there is a maximum of 4 days rest between similar sets?

IE: A > off > B > off > A > off > B > off > A > off... ad infinitum.

Edit: I know rest days allow muscle growth. But surely 4 days is enough time?

EMSKR: How to effectively decline sales pitches.

At this very moment I am sitting in a repair "salon" as they say (uppity high end repair shop) where my car is having a "free" oil change that was included in the purchase. I say "free" since, in all likelihood, they will find something that needs repairing. I can see it now...in about 30 minutes the front desk lady is going to sit down next to me, estimate-in-hand, outlining all of the money that needs to be handed over to them at this very instant...I mean, it's amazing I made it here in the first place! I don't blame them, they did just put 4qt of synthetic goodness in my oil pan so I must spend 1300 on a mildly-leaky gasket right?

What this amounts to is a highly effective sales pitch for largely unnecessary and over-priced repairs that are usually dismissed by a second (more honest) opinion. Does anyone know how to daftly dodge their tactics?

EMSK: You should not use Xenon headlights kits with YOUR OLD HALOGEN REFLECTORS. IT IS A VERY BAD thing to do.

For example, Xenon headlights should look like the image on the bottom. If they look like the image on the top, you've installed Xenon bulbs into a reflector designed for Halogen bulbs, and now everybody is blind while also laughing at you for being too cheap to install them properly.

Another example

It's illegal in many places, too. Best case, you'll have to undo the modification to pass inspection. Worst case, you get pulled over and learn your license was suspended 2 years ago and apparently the previous owner packed cocaine into your wheel well.

Please, stick to the halogens your car came with, or install a complete kit with projectors.

Otherwise I will find you.

EMSKR: shaving 101

Been shaving for 4 years now. I want redditors opinion on what is the best shaving cream, razor, and the difference between shaving with a normal razor and an electric one.

Currently I use the Gillete Fusion ProGlide with Gillete Fusion ProGlide shaving gel.

I have sensative skin, what does Reddit recommend?

should i increase weight/reps on first set if i have to do less weight/reps on later sets (5x5)

Lets say hypothetically on my bench if i was doing 5x250 on each set week 1. Next week, If i have the ability on the first set (or two) to go up to 5x270 or 7x250, should I? Even if i know for a fact that i will do less than 250 on later sets? Or should i just try to do 255/260 x5 each set.
