EMSKR: How to enter a conversation without being rude or awkward.
I am put in a lot of situations in which I need to ask someone something or speak to them and said person is speaking to someone else about an entirely different topic. I've usually just tried to walk up and hope I am not being rude or awkward as hell, but I don't think that's the best way to go. I feel really rude for interrupting. How does one approach this situation?
Edit for clarification: I do normally say 'excuse me' when walking up and say thanks when I am done. It still just feels like I am interrupting in a rude manner
EMSKR: how to conceal my shoelaces without them bothering me all day?
So when I tie my shoes (specifically dress shoes or wing tips) I like to conceal the knot so I don't look like I'm in the first grade. However, I can feel the excess laces against my feet and it's pretty uncomfortable, sometimes even painful. Is there a method of concealing that circumvents this? - Keep in mind I have to be able to slacken them up to get them on/off.
I think I uploaded a photo to demonstrate, but I'm on mobile so who knows

Boyfriend Wants Weights for Xmas - What Type/Size?
My boyfriend loves surprises, so I don't want to just go and ask him this question. I know he would love a dumbbell set for xmas. I found an adjustable weight set on Amazon (they are Bowflex) that get awesome reviews. (Here: http://ift.tt/1XgUE3x) I thought they would be perfect, then I realized they only go up to 50 lbs each (which seems like a lot to me). HOWEVER, that led me down a rabbit hole of googling and I ultimately realized I have no idea what I'm doing. Perhaps 50 lbs is not enough?! I've never been to the gym with him so I have no idea. I can't just casually ask him "so, how much are you lifting these days?" HAR HAR. So what do I get him? I want him to have something totally awesome. I'm pretty sure he could lift like 1,000 pounds, but I am his #1 fan so I am biased. ;) But I know for sure he can lift more than 50 lbs... :\
The only other thing I know about his workout habits is that he thinks crossfit is dangerous and he is a bit snobbish about it (haha!). No offense to those who enjoy crossfit! But hoping that might help. Thank you!
tl;dr: My boyfriend wants dumbbells for Xmas. He is really strong (I don't know how else to say this...). What size/types of dumbbells should I buy him?

EMSKR How to remain calm in all circumstances
When I am under pressure, I often find myself making shitty decisions that I otherwise normally wouldn't make. I'd like to be calm and make the best rational decision at all times but it seems like all the distractions prevent that from happening.
Here's one example. A few months ago, I was downstairs in the basement all alone in my house. I heard a loud noise upstairs and I was almost sure a robber had broken in. The first thing I did was empty-handedly run upstairs and kick the door open to confront the robber(s). I ended up breaking the door because of all the adrenaline and my mom wasn't too happy about that since it was a relatively new home. During that entire experience, there were 0 rational decisions that were made. Here are things that I normally would have done if I were a bit more calm..
-confirm if there were even robbers in the house by approaching door silently and listening
-only engage robber if I had the element of surprise
-grab at least a drum stick or another potential weapon...
This is just one example but I often make absolute shit decisions when I am under pressure.

EMSKR: Nail and Hand Care
In the past I've worked a lot of labor intensive outdoor oriented jobs, which required little to no thought on physical appearance other than "Be strong and hard working".
However I just took a job where my appearance, and all aspects of appearance will matter quite a bit. While I'm familiar with proper hygiene, one portion I'm not well versed on is nails.
Does anyone have any tips on nail and hand care? Beyond basic trimming and filing, I'm clueless.

EMSKR: How to intimidate somebody for the right reason?
I feel that everyone should know how to intimidate somebody for the right reason, this could be someone who sees you as a target and has or is in the process of demeaning you. My problem is that I tend to go a bit overboard, I've often skipped the psychological part and gone straight to physicality to defend my honor. I suppose that is the main purpose, to defend your honor when others would tread upon it.
How can you self condition yourself to approach someone in a way to intimidate but not cause bodily harm, unless it's absolutely necessary? I'd imagine maintaining an aura of confidence would be key and also knowing the right things to say. It can quickly spiral out of control when you start shouting profanities and get violent in an emotional situation.
Personally I feel the calm but determined personality to be the most civilized and potentially effective mindset to go about it. Think Fedor Emelianenko, a stone cold killer that doesn't show any unnecessary emotions and finishes fights without any ego involved. Are there ways to train yourself to become comfortable doing this without actually getting into legitimate confrontations?
EMSKR: What to do when an armed terrorist/mass murderer comes in and everyone is unarmed
I know in those situations (e.g. school shootings or Bataclan massacre) the odds are really not in the victims' favour, but I'm wondering what would still be the best reaction, if not to save your own life, at least to save the others'.
For instance, Ben Carson caused some controversy when he advised that people should have rushed all together on the shooter to stop him, instead of letting him kill them one by one. Maybe it was insulting for the victims, but I wonder if it's not pretty good advice. Indeed the shooter can't win if people rush on him from all sides, even if they're unarmed, and then only a few people would die instead of all. However I'm really not sure this is realistic. If one person stands up to stop the shooter, he will get shot dead even before he has finished to explain his plan. And even if he managed to tell it, would anyone else be convinced and risk their life?
So what else should a man do in such a situation? Hide and discretely contact the police? Try to take the shooter by surprise? What moves might work against someone with a (machine) gun? Alternatively, what pieces of furniture might be used as a protection or as a weapon?
I know the question is general while the answer depends heavily on the situation, but feel free to imagine a scenario that fits your advice. Also don't hesitate to share stories of unarmed people who managed to stop shooters or terrorists.

EMSK: yeast infections [nsfw, sorry]
So I just recently got over a yeast infection and it was quite difficult to find information on it and identify it, and there was no info on the topic on this sub, so I thought I would make a thread just to inform some fellow men about what to do.
I first noticed something was wrong over a week or two ago. However, I thought it was just friction marks from usage. The clue was that it was all gathered just under the tip and persisted even for a couple days unused, when friction marks are typically along the shaft and fade away quickly. Then believing it to be a hygienic issue, I started obsessively washing it, but that didn't really help at all, either.
After my girlfriend suggested it might be a yeast infection, I googled it and it matched the symptoms (red, shiny, wet marks just under the tip on the shaft). There were lots of different tips and advice for how to handle it and one source even said "just pick 3 or 4 different treatments and then apply them for 30 days after all symptoms have disappeared." lol
Well, one thing that seemed like a good idea was white vinegar. I tried that first. It worked fantastically. Gave it a couple dunks, poured some all over, and rinsed it off in the shower. Went away almost immediately, is healing up nice. Stung minimally.
tl;dr if you get a yeast infection, dunk your dick in vinegar
please discuss other methods or experiences in the comments so this sub has a solid database.

EMSKR: Dealing with a retaliator that persists even if you deal with it as a "Man."
I made a post not too long ago about a retaliator I've been dealing with and asked for advice on how the "Man," way to go about would be. The wisdom that was directed towards me urged me to not retaliate back myself as that would be playing the perpetrators own game and besides bringing unwanted risks to myself, wouldn't be the mature route to take.
I can believe in that since it's the higher route to take, the thing is that this wasn't a one time retaliation in the past but in fact multiple incidents and every time I would take the non retaliating route mself. They've varied in occurrences and intensity of the acts. For the most part they've deescalated greatly ranging from thrown glass throughout the street (made to look random), indecent littering (condoms, tampons, fast food), and most recently loitering often where the trash is left. Law enforcement has been unable to take any action against these individuals due to a lack of evidence to pin them for these acts. I don't have a cctv system which limits my ability to acquire any useful footage of things that could occur within view of my property but I plan on getting one.
Today I was awoken by my car alarm going off, I got out of bed and went outside turn to it off by key and did a walk around, no noticeable damage or signs of anything that set it off. I notice some teenage kids nearby, they're playing with a football but appeared to all be gathered in the driveway. I take a look at the cars and notice one that could be related to the retaliator. Putting on my running shoes I take a lap around the block to pass the house and sure enough none other than the retaliator them self is present. I make solid eye contact towards them as I jog past and they don't make any effort to appear as though they know me. I'm more than convinced that the kid, or one of his buddies, struck my vehicle to set the alarm off. Most likely by throwing the football at it or by kicking the tire to make it inconspicuous.
My issue is this, I'm a little older than this kid, who is a senior if I recall correctly, and feel no desire to engage in the same tactics that they are which according to this sub is a good thing. The unfortunate part is even though I can continue going about it like a man and not stoop to their level that makes me feel like I have a very limited repertoire at my disposal to directly deal with future occurrences besides getting passive counter measures such as a cctv system (really the best and only option I feel I have at the moment which isn't acquired due to funds). I had a strong desire to walk up to the kid and get in their face but didn't know if it was the best thing to do in the long run. What bothers me most is that this individual refuses to ever portray their opinion to me face to face and has chosen to commit these acts behind my back and pretty much avoids any person to person conflict.
What would be gained or lost by confronting them face to face in an intimidating fashion? I'm presuming that doing so would be taking the lower route as I'd be giving into my anger and hate by doing so, possibly something that they actually desire. At this point in time it feels as though unless I somehow go about catching them in the act of doing something that I stand no chance at pinning them legally or personally for their efforts. Today's occurrence seemed like the epitome of "Let's try and bait this person without actually being there to face any consequences, though nearby enough so they'll know it was us." I remember my friends group got into a huge feud with another at my school over an incident which resulted in a huge back and forth fest which resulted in many peoples cars being damaged, and egos clashing. In the end it didn't really matter who struck harder, rage was the ever present underlying factor that inspired the conflict to continue.
Surely something must be done other than observe and report, I know who's doing it, they know that I know, and they continue to do things that are hard if not impossible to pin them for. Talking on a purely theoretical level I feel that a physical altercation in my favor would be more than enough to discourage them to continue these acts, this is surely not the most mature or safe route but suffice to say I've had immediate success with it in the past. In highschool I once had two kids who I never had any altercations with throw a coin at me in class, I was an introvert and mostly kept to myself, I asked them to stop, they threw another and I got up walked over to the closest kid and slapped him, they were both shocked that I did it and asked why I had to do that, I said I already asked you to stop. I never had another incident with them again, I destroyed them in that moment as witnessed by most of the class who had just been watching me approaching destruction, our teacher was extremely old and often wouldn't pay attention to mischievous acts. Applying that example to my current predicament would in my opinion have similar results. It is a different setting though I can't deny, my honor was immediately being challenged in front of my peers and I chose the only route that could actually have any effect on stopping those kids from continuing. How is my situation now that much different though? If I do nothing won't this individual continue to commit these acts?
TLDR: Retaliator continues to commit acts regardless of taking the mature route and not retaliating myself. Unable to catch them in the act or prove that they are doing these acts which has resulted in law enforcement being incapable of taking action. Seeking alternatives to discourage this behavior from continuing.

A question about PHUL
So I've been on PHUL for 7 weeks now. Since this is the /r/ I heard about it in, I'll assume you're familiar with it. My question is regarding Power Lower, which I did today.
The way mine is programmed is: Squat 3x5 Deadlift 3x5 Leg Press 4x10 Calf Press (superset) 4x10 Leg Extension 4x8
I'm wanting to get into Strongman, so I'd presume Deadlift would have a higher priority over Squat, but I'm pretty spent after working my way up to, and through, the work sets, and it makes me wonder if it's hindering my Deadlift progress.
I understand it's usually suggested to do squats before deadlift, but wanted to get y'all's input to see if you'd change things up/around.

EMSKR: How to deal with retaliation?
When someone tries to grief you by causing physical or mental damage to you or your property what is the best way to go about dealing with it? Can it ever be justified to retaliate back even harder? How can you not strike back but still win in principle?
My property was struck by an individual and I have the choice of hitting them harder or doing nothing as law enforcement doesn't have enough to go off. It doesn't sit well with me knowing that people can do stuff like this and end up getting off essentially scott free, fighting fire with fire would be satisfying though risky if one were caught or it resulted in a back and forth but then again it could show that you wouldn't be trifled with.
Is it wrong to think of it like getting punched then punching your attacker back? In that sense I'm sure most would be inclined to do that but this is a bit different. So far all I feel is that I've shown that no consequences will come but I could easily turn that around pretty quickly, the question remains however, is it the right thing to do?

Why are my lifts so wack?
My lifts for 5rm are:
Squat: 245lb DL: 320lb OH Press: 165lb Bench: 235lb
I'm 6'4 around 210lb.
As can be seen, my upper body is much stronger comparatively than my lower body. I can also do a 130 pounds added full range chinup and 8 reps dips at 80 pounds added.
I've been off an on doing linear progression in 2 month spurts for the last few years. I'm finally taking it seriously, and these are my current lifts after 4 months of lifting.
EMSKR: How do you show appreciation to yourself?
So I'm getting back into mindfulness meditations, and at the end of the session it says "show yourself love and appreciation for doing this practice today, whatever that means to you" Unfortunately what that means to me are video games (not great since I'm trying to wind down not back up), Reddit (makes me feel apathetic), or masturbating(great for the 5 minutes it takes me, then shitty for the next ten). Sure I have books or movies, but neither of those things I feel like doing out of love or appreciation. Nor do I have any form of disposable income so even a small treat is out of the question.
So I just wondered if any of you had ways that you show appreciation/love to yourself in more constructive ways than mine.

Doing Stronglifts 5x5 and cutting, need advice please.
Hey guys, first here are my stats 31, 187lbs(august 196lbs) Squats 215, bench 155, row 125, ohp 115, deadlift 225 So I am in the middle of a cut after doing a dirty bulk last year and went away from training for about 6 months. Gained lots of fat. My goal is to get to around 10-15 percent body fat and keep as much muscle and strength as I can. Anyways I am struggling lots with mostly squats and deadlifts. Should I reduce my work by 10-15 percent and stick with that till my cut is done or try something else. Today I did 5x5 of squats at 185 and it felt like I was working but not to the point of passing out. I own some my own equipment, I currently have a short squat rack, barbells+weights, bench, powerblock 15-70lbs and a concept2 row machine. In short should I stick with 5x5 and stay at a reduced 10% deload till I am ready to go up again or try something else. Thanks

I've always wondered if there was a surefire way to do this. People driving without headlights on at night, whether you're in front of or behind them. I know in many states you can get in trouble for flashing your brights, and still, many people do not realize that you're signaling them.

If there are any tips for this, I'd love to know!

Anyone else totally lack squat work capacity for volume?
I just moved over to the DUP routine as perscribed by Zourdos with the intensity/volume etc blocks, and I just tried my first 4x8 @290lbs squat day. My true 1RM is about 455 (highbar olympic, 6'3 210) and Ive been operating at 410 (90%) but holy shit if I could get past 6 reps for a couple sets at 290 (70%). Anyone else find this? I guess it makes sense; I usually operate within 1-4 reps and pretty low volume/high frequency. I was just a little shocked to see how fatigued I am getting despite the much higher 1RM.
The lazy guy in me wants to just make my squats power and strength days, but I was hoping for a little feedback as to whether I should follow the program to a T for squats.

Parenting Expectations
When you think about parent expectations what comes mind? Do you think about what your life will be like? Do you think about how a baby will affect your relationship or marriage? Do you think about what fatherhood will be like? Do you think about what fatherhood will do to you and for you? Will being a father bring out the best in you? Do you think about how you will respond to the challenges of fatherhood because your own childhood was less than ideal?
These and many other questions are appropriate to ponder because they will affect how your parent. It will also affect your marriage because of the different upbringings.
Because your world is about to be rocked or has been rocked for sometime now I have provided five practical tips to approach your new role as you become a Superdad.
- Read books and watch videos about parenting and more specifically being a father.
There are several types of good resources from well-known experts who have written books. I would also suggest watching some TEDTalks in the education category. It is mostly directed to educators but many of the principals can be applied to parenting.
- Spend time with more experienced parents and professionals.
You can learn a lot from people watching so I suggest taking mental notes. Write things down. Have discussions with experienced parents. Seek out support groups and classes. Your community is likely to have these groups and classes.
- Have ongoing discussions with your partner about your fears, hopes, desires, and expectations about being a parent.
The two of you should probably talk about how you were parented. There is bound to be differences and it is important to have ongoing discussions. Talk to each other about what you expect and how you will tackle this new adventure of parenthood.
- Remember you are not the babysitter or a backup parent.
Dads remember you are an equal partner in raising your child. Don’t allow other to devalue your role as a dad. Your role is just as important as the mothers. Take control and define your own role as a father. As a dad you will face challenges and issues no babysitter would want to face. So being a Superdad and be there for the most rewarding experience you will ever receive.
- Allow for mistakes and learn from them.
You are not perfect and will make mistakes. Young children are generally very forgiving and forget easily. It is important to forgive yourself and ask yourself what you can learn from the mistake.

How do you know if there is a subtext to a conversation, and if there is, how do you interpret it?
How do I balance a marathon training with the wish to build muscle? 2m/6,6ft 65kg/143pounds
Hey guys,
this is my situation:
I'm 2,02 metres tall with around 65kg. My diet is a very strict whole food plant based vegan one (no shitty vegan products, hardly any processed foods - mostly fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds) (I did however use a plant based protein powder)
Now, I've done martial arts for around 10 months and haven't seen much increase in strength. The performance increase was there but I still looked as thin as I do now. Then I got injured, had to pause for 3 months and now I'm back, starting at 0 again.
My goal is to have a nice enough body for the girl I have a crush on while also being able to defend myself and finish a (half-marathon first) marathon in the near future.
I'm a very competitive person (studying 3 bachelor programs at once) and used to do Martial Arts 5+ times a week. As of now I have paused martial arts for 3+ months as I want to return stronger.
As of now I run about 5 times a week but I'm unsure how to build muscle for martial arts that might also tend to look good. Is it even possible or will I just burn all of those muscles by running at most days?
What am I missing? What advice would you give me? Help!
Greetings

EMSKR: How to handle your emotions
I've always heard stuff like "Don't bottle up your emotions."
But it's always felt implied that I actually should bottle them up. Or at least find somewhere to put them. I don't know what to do with strong emotions. Usually I just clam up even more than usual until it dies down enough to move on, but I find that it's mostly all still there and just piles up.
The only suggestions I've really heard before are either journaling or various kinds of physical activities (weight lifting, boxing stuff, etc.), but those don't seem to help with the actual emotions.
[EMSKR] How to build credit
title says it all. I've often heard that if you get a credit card, make small purchases each month, and then pay them off each time, your score will increase. At the same time though I've heard that isn't correct. What's a good method?
