EMSK: How to make a memory palace to get superhuman memory.

What is a Memory Palace?

A memory palace is a memory enhancement technique that takes locations that are familiar to you (like your house) and uses visual associations to store memories of other things. The memory palace is also known as the method of loci.

Before things like pen and paper, almost everyone used this method. Slowly over time people started to forget about this technique because they didn’t have to remember everything anymore. Thankfully people are starting to learn about the memory palace again. This resurgence in the memory palace is probably due to it being used in many tv shows like Sherlock, and The Mentalist.

What is it good for?

The memory palace is probably the most versatile mnemonic filing system ever created. It is used by memory champions who memorize hundreds of digits and the order of multiple shuffled decks of cards. It can also be used for more practical things like studying to pass an exam, memorizing presentations, and learning the key information of a book.

You can basically use a memory palace to remember anything you want.

How does a memory palace work?

People are very good at remembering places they have been to. You only need to visit somewhere once to be able to make a pretty accurate visual memory of that place. You can close your eyes right now and pretend you are walking through different rooms in your house and you will be very accurate in remembering where everything is.

That is what makes the memory palace so effective. Instead of memorizing random facts by repeating them you are remembering places and objects which your brain remembers much better.

Make your own Memory Palace Choosing a palace

The first thing you ar going to need to do is find somewhere to use as your first palace. It can be anywhere you now well (ex. your house, family members houses…).

Making a route you will take

Now that you have the place you are going to use as your memory palace you are going to need to create a path that you will “walk through”. This path should be easy to remember.

You should make rules that you will always follow. Here are a few rules that I use and I recommend you use too.

always start from where you enter the house/room. turn left and move clockwise around the perimeter of the room until you get back to the entrance I always turn left to go to the next room (you can skip rooms that you don’t want to use, you just need to remember that you skipped them. if I finish going around all the rooms I can by only turning left there are usually rooms in the middle that I missed, I use these rooms last. Creating visual memories

Now that you have your memory palace all set up you are now ready to start storing memories. You can start using your memory palace instantly if you need to memorize something you can easily visualize like a shopping list.

The stranger the visual image is the better you will be at remembering it. there are a few ways that can make a mental image more memorable.

Make it giant – Imagine the object as something way larger than it should be Millions of something – Imagine that there are millions of a certain object. Switch roles – picture one item doing something the other one should be doing (ex. if you needed to remember to buy earrings and pencils, you could imagine you had a pencil sticking through your ear. I bet you’d remember that!) Action – it is always easier to remember things that are performing some kind of task. ( ex. running) Applying one or more of these rules will help make these pictures more ridiculous and by being more ridiculous it will be easier to remember.

Visualizing the non-visual

What if you want to remember something that you can’t visualize easily like numbers or definitions to weird words. You can’t just put things like numbers directly into your memory palace. It would be too repetitive and each image wouldn’t be unique enough.

In order to put numbers in your memory palace, you need to be able to visualize them. One great way to do this is by using the Major System.

The Major System

The major system associates numbers with the sounds of letters. For example, if you saw the word MuD it would be number 31. If you needed to make up an image for 15 it could be something like TaiL or DiaL.

When I was in high school I used this method to learn 314 digits of pi on pi day. I won a blueberry pie because of it. I also taught this method to one of my younger sisters who was in middle school. She was able to learn about 60 digits and she won an apple pie on pi day too.

TLDR: Use your dry clean socks to dry between your toes after showering / bathing.

If you are prone to getting AF it is very important to keep your feet clean and dry particularly between the toes because that is where the buggers love to breed. However it is very hard to properly dry between your toes with an ordinary towel. Some years ago I realised that the warm dry socks I was putting on immediately after my shower were perfect for drying between the toes. This worked like magic for me. Once I started doing this I went from chronic sufferer to completely free of the dreaded fungus.

EMSK: 14 Glaring Signs Of Social Incompetence You Want To Avoid

Everyone wants to read about how to develop great social skills. But what good are the best tips and techniques if they are being destroyed by negative behavior that makes you come across like a douchebag? Worry no more. Here is a list of behaviors that you should avoid at all costs if you want to be seen as socially skilled.

Before we dive in, I would like to clarify something: Everyone has some negative social behavior. It’s normal. Things become problematic, however, as soon as these behaviors turn into habits.

I, for example, used some of the negative behaviors below as my default state of communicating. I did not know how to connect with others through positive communication. So I relied on connecting through negativity. But it backfired on me. Because who is going to spend time with a person full of negative social behavior? Right, people with the same social incompetence.

So, learn from my foolishness, be honest with yourself, assess which of the following habits you are guilty of, and make a conscious effort to get rid of them. Every aspect of your life will profit from it.

1. Gossiping: Gossip is inherently interesting to most people. But you aren’t like most people. If you are reading this then I assume you want to become extraordinary. You want to become a man or woman who is being respected and admired for their outstanding social competence. And to achieve this goal, you should cut back on gossip. If not, then you better join all the others and let them fill you in on the latest drama.

Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas. -Marie Curie

2. Exaggerating: I used to be guilty of exaggerating everything. Mainly, I did it to make my stories more interesting. What I didn’t know, however, was that constant exaggerating can destroy your self-esteem. The reason for it is, that every time you exaggerate a story, you tell yourself, “My life is not interesting enough.” And of course, eventually, others will start to doubt your credibility and think everything you say is exaggerated. Even if it isn’t.

3. Overpromising: “Next year, I will go on a trip to China and live there for a year.”

Statements like that can start interesting conversations. However, if you often make big bold statements and never follow through, you will soon be seen as merely a talker – a person who never takes action.

4. Not asking questions: The most common form of social incompetence is talking with someone, but not investing anything back into the conversation.

Of course, you can’t be interested and fully involved in every single conversation. But in the vast majority you should ask questions even if you believe the other person has nothing interesting to tell. Often, you will be in for a surprise.

5. Badmouthing – talking trash about someone behind their back: Richard Branson’s mother had him stand in front of a mirror every time he talked negatively about someone. Branson writes in his biography that it was a valuable lesson for him.

6. Talking endlessly about yourself: While being able to talk about yourself is important, it’s equally important not to overdo it. My rule of thumb: If you think you might be talking about yourself too much, you almost definitely do.

7. Bragging: Not much to say here. Don’t do it! Humbleness is gold. If you find yourself bragging a lot, it could hint at a self-esteem problem. In that case, this poem might help you.

8. Taking over the conversation so you can talk about something that’s only interesting to you: Friend: “I don’t know how I can finish my studies without my parents’ supporting me.”

You: “You think you have got problems? When my cousin studied law, his parents…”

Everything can be twisted in a way that allows you to talk about topics that interest you. The problem is that you cut your conversational partner off and chances are the new direction you are taking isn’t going to interest anyone but you.

9. Unhelpful criticizing: Critique can be immensely helpful if it is given with actionable feedback. Unhelpful critique, on the other hand, hurts others and makes you an asshole.

Friend: “How do you like my poem.”

You: “It’s too long.”

Friend: “But you haven’t even read it yet!”

You: “I don’t have to. I can see that it’s too long.”

10. Using a friend as your emotional garbage bag: It’s perfectly fine to share your problems with a trusted friend. However, you have to mix the negative stuff with a boatload of positivity and an open ear. Otherwise, you are just dumping negativity on a friend so you can feel better. Not cool!

If you need someone to talk about how much you hate the world and everything inhabiting it, rather find a good therapist.

11. Talking about people others don’t know: Conversations about people your conversational partners haven’t met or heard of are inherently uninteresting. Sure, sometimes a funny story about an estranged uncle can be hilarious, but more often than not, stories about people no one but you knows are tiring.

While this is not a severe problem, you should pay attention to it nonetheless if you want to develop great social skills.

12. Talking about topics that alienate others: E.g: When in a mixed group the guys are only talking about sports (and the women in the group don’t share their passion).

13. Constant complaining:

  • “This restaurant sucks.”
  • “Why is everything here so expensive?”
  • “Can’t they get that we are in a fucked-up economy right now?”

Thanks for your opinion! You just made my day worse and I don’t want to hang out with you anymore.

14. Phone addiction: It sounds obvious but really isn’t: When you are in a conversation keep your phone in your pocket, rucksack, or wherever you store that thing! I know, the web is full of wonderful things you want to explore, but please wait until you are alone – which, ironically, is going to be sooner than you expect if you don’t put your phone away.

EMSK: How To Stop Being Afraid Of Expressing Yourself

It might be because you have a fixed mindset, as opposed to a growth mindset.

Credit goes to Carol Dweck for the research on the two mindsets. Check out her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success if you want to read more about this.

This is the difference between the two mindsets when it comes to social interaction...

Growth mindset: I said something awkward.

Fixed mindset: I am awkward.

Someone with a fixed mindset believes that "who I am" is static. They believe that they can't change it in any meaningful way. Their successes and their failures simply confirm who they are.

Someone with a growth mindset believes that "who I am" can be developed, and every failure is an opportunity to learn. Their successes and their failures are separate from who they are.

With a fixed mindset, every social interaction becomes an evaluation and confirmation of "who I am". When you say something awkward you take it as proof that you are mediocre. Because of this you avoid challenges like expressing yourself or sharing your personal opinion... since these challenges are difficult and are likely to expose your flaws. You prefer to succeed at easy tasks, like staying quiet, because it lets you avoid failure.

With a growth mindset, every social interaction is an opportunity to improve. Saying something awkward is simply an indication that you need to put more effort into that area. It is not a sign of failure or a reflection of "who I am".

The trick to accepting yourself is to see your behaviours as something separate to your self.

If a child says something impressive you would cultivate a fixed mindset (the bad one) if you told them "You are a smart boy/girl". What you are doing by saying this is connecting what they did to who they are. This child then learns to fear difficult challenges because failing the challenge means that they are a failure.

You can cultivate a growth mindset instead (the good one) by telling them "You did a good job". You are no longer connecting what they did to who they are. The feedback is only about what they did. They learn to enjoy failure and see it as a necessary step towards improvement.

It might be helpful if you change your own inner dialogue. Forget "who I am" and focus instead on "what I did".

Maybe keep a rubber band on your wrist and then change wrists every time you catch yourself feeling uncomfortable with "who I am". Think about "what you did" instead, and what you could do differently.

Eg. You say something awkward in a conversation. Then you catch yourself thinking "I'm awkward."

Think instead: "I said something awkward. What can I say next time to be less awkward?"

It's okay. Laugh about it.

Over time you will find it easier to share your opinion and express yourself because your behaviour will no longer be tied to your opinion of yourself.

EMSKR: Promoted beyond my age and experience, I now need some guidance on how to talk, write, and behave in the "corporate" world... Maybe movies or books? Please help

Hello EMSKR:

I really don't know who to turn to. I recently got promoted to a corporate position and I'm REALLY out of my element. I have the skills and education, but none of the "corporate culture" or experience.

My now peers are all older, ivy league educated, wealthy and (I must say) white... In all aspects I'm the opposite, I got promoted thanks to my education and being well liked by my peers and clients.

I'm really out of place in meetings, emails, and calls...I don't want to screw up.

Can you suggest any movies, so i can get the corporate "lingo" and speech patterns. Books that teach corporate writing and talking?

Thanks in advance....

Wrist cracking during upper body exercises. Is it normal?

Hey all,

I've recently started school for programming, so I've decided to start up strength training to combat the sedentary life style. One thing I've noticed though is that I've been having a lot of cracking in my left wrist when doing upper body exercises like the chest press. There is no pain or anything, just a cracking every now and then. The only reason I'm concerned is because I broke this wrist about 4 years ago, so I'm not sure if it's something to do with that, or if it's normal until I've built up some more muscle?

EMSK: How to control bleeding

here is a good source for bleeding control in an emergency. However I feel inclined to specify that there are certain criteria that tourniquets must have in order to effective:

  1. A tourniquet must be a MINIMUM of 1.5 inches wide

  2. The article does state to put it 2 inches above the wound and that it should not go on a joint, but it doesn't specify that it should be placed 2 inches above a joint if 2 inches above the wound is on a joint.

  3. Always assess tourniquet effectiveness by checking the distal pulse after the application. For those that don't know what a distal pulse is; if the tourniquet is on a leg check for a pulse in the foot, if it's on an arm check for the pulse in the study

EMSKR How to wash your shirts so they don't fade

I've been using Trunk Club (and even more recently, Stitch Fix) to spruce up my closet of cloths, primarily getting shirts to wear at the office.

I typically wear button up shirts (short and long sleeve) with nicer jeans and I send my shirts to the dry cleaners after wearing them twice. I've started to notice that my shirts are fading after 4-5 visits to the dry cleaners.

Is there a better way to take care of nice shirts so they stay looking newer for longer?

Go look up your local makerspace and go in for a tour.

A makerspace is kinda like a gym, but instead of exercise equipment, you get access to stuff like:

  • Wood shop
  • Metal shop
  • CNC Mill
  • CNC Router
  • Lathes
  • Auto lifts
  • 3D printer / scanner
  • Laser cutter
  • Vinyl cutter
  • MIG / TIG / spot welders
  • expensive-ass software (like Solidworks, Photoshop, Coreldraw, Aspire)

Man shit, am I right?

If you're going to be buying any tools, especially over a couple hundred dollars, it might be worth it to use a makerspace instead.

They offer classes - basic to advanced - on how to use the equipment. There's also a wealth of knowledge in the members...

Also, 3D design is becoming commonplace, and people are uploading their designs now. Check out thingiverse.com. You can straight up download and print out a full size Stormtrooper helmet.

Some makerspaces, like mine, will give you free membership or services for volunteering and/or teaching classes

EMSK: How To Choose First House

http://ift.tt/2d1GHnH

a safe lower back "pain"?

Hey, this is my second time deadlifting. i weigh 130, and did 120lbs for my deadlift. (5x3)

Since it's such a heavy weight compared to all my other exercises, i can't really compare the feel that i get and tell if its good or not. Doesn't really make me react, it just feels tired and slightly "painful" but its not a super uncomfortable feeling.

It comes from uncertainty of if im deadlifting correctly. i put scapula over the bar, mid foot, push up with upper legs, and push sort of foward while pulling back with my back to get my whole body straight, push hips back, then lower it down as it rubs against my body.

Does this sound aight? thanks. How can i tell if im doing it wrong other than a video and others telling me? videos havent helped me much. i don't know the order in which i do the body movements, but i think i have it down...

This is the order i do things

bar over mid foot Arms shoulder width bent over straight back grab bar "squat" down until i feel a slight stretch on hamstrings Take a deep breath thats comfortable Push up with legs something happens and i start becoming straight slightly after i push with legs.

I'm not sure if im engaging my glutes to push forward (they are never too tired after, but its only 120lbs) Or if im just pulling with my back? is there much of a difference or will my glutes engage regardless? not sure which i am doing.

Looking to start strength training, any tips and or suggestions?

Hi r/strength_training. I'm a 21 year old male, 1.78m, 129kg and am looking to start properly strength training. 2-3 years ago i used to work and do heavy physical jobs like working at a woodmill and on a farm regularly so i felt like i was in pretty good physical shape. id moved abroad for my education since then and haven't really been able to keep an active lifestyle. today i went to help out a friend with some heavy lifting and it feels like it takes me way more effort to do things that used to be more easy, so ive decided in the coming week to carve out a schedule and finally go to the gym. I've never done strenght training or really worked out at a gym before so i don't know much about the etiquette or how to do it or what exercises work best, im currently researching it now and any tips suggestions and or workout regimes are highly appreciated!

West Side Questions

Hey. Sup. So Ive been powerlifting for a few years. I started with stronglifts, moved on to Madcow, 5/3/1 and two variants of cube. Im thinking of starting a West Side Cycle. My best ever numbers (im old and have been battling certain military related weaknesses) were at S420/b265/d450 and im probably at s390(recovering knee injury)/b250?/d450/500 now. Im not competing but I like being strong. Im on my first pl program after taking time off and doing bb work for a few months to recover from some knee issues and then moving a few states so I havent even hit any maxes on squat or bench yet. Where do I start with Westside? Why is there so little put into deadlifting and so much put into squatting and benching? Ne recommend a good working program spreadsheet? Im technical so I like having a spread sheet with % and shit.

I just have so many questions about it.

About to start training for a combine (Football) would like some advice

My last collegiate football season about halfway over and im trying to make a push for the CFL but don't have nearly enough money for a professional strength trainer to get me where I want to go. My In season weight flux is about 238-245 as a Pass Rush DE/OLB. My combine numbers before the season are 12 Reps of 225 Bench, 9'6 Broad Jump, 34.5 Vert, 4.72 40 yard dash, 4.1 Pro Agility, and 6.9 L Drill. Of course I want to improve all these numbers but especially focusing of Bench, Vert, and my 40 in that order, with my weight being around 250-260. My numbers are about correct if not better at some areas with other CFL athletes of my size. Any work out, nutrition, and scheduling tips are greatly appreciated.

EMSK: Safe Follow Distance While Driving

I hate being tail-gated, and I hate seeing other people tail-gating someone else. I recently found the best way to keep driving smooth, especially in construction, bad road conditions, heavy traffic, and even regular cruises. It's simple: Always leave enough room behind the vehicle in front of you so that someone can change lanes in between. Then repeat that step.

  • Drive safely everyone.

EMSK: How To Overcome Social Anxiety

Panic.

You’ve just spotted her at the other end of the grocery aisle. That girl from the other team at work. What was her name again? Shit, I can’t remember.

You only ever speak with her at the coffee machine… mostly about the weather and whether or not your weekends were good.

You quickly look the other way. Maybe she hasn’t seen me yet.

You like to avoid awkward interactions. They make you anxious. But what’s so awkward about them? Why are we afraid of a little chit-chat?

How to snap out of an anxious mood with a co-worker

The above example is awkward because we’re meeting Coffee-machine Girl in a new and unfamiliar setting. We know how our espresso interactions go, but we don’t know how this grocery-aisle interaction is supposed to go. We haven’t had time to prepare, and we panic about what to say.

The above paragraph is the Elephant In Your Head.

It’s using pretty much all of your brainpower, but you ignore your Elephant and say something like this instead:

Oh heyyyy, how are you?

Oh heyyy, I'm good. How are you?

(Ggyyyhhh this is awkward... <lump in throat> )

Yeah I’m good. Just getting some groceries.

Cool, me too. What are you buying?

Ahh, some noodles, and some veg. What about you?

Nice, ahh, I’ve got some chicken.

...

Cool, well I’ll see you at work.

K, see ya.

<facepalm>

It’s awkward because your words are incongruent with what’s in your head. You’re anxious because you’re ignoring your Elephant.

You (1) didn’t expect to see Coffee-machine Girl here and you (2) don’t know what to talk about. THAT’s what’s going on in your head, right? So say that. In a fun way.

Hey, how’s it going? It’s (1) so weird seeing you outside of work. My (2) brain's trying to work out what to talk to you about.

Heyyy, haha. Yeah, it’s so strange.

You’ve acknowledged that you’re a little uncomfortable. She’s accepted your feeling about the situation. The Elephant In Your Head is happy.

The anxiety comes from hiding that you’re uncomfortable. From resisting it. Now that you don’t need to hide it anymore, the anxiety fades.

You know what I just realised… we talk at the coffee machine every few days but I know like nothing about you, except that you drink coffee… and eat asparagus (looking into her basket).

Haha, and it looks like you eat chicken. Lots of chicken. What do you want to know?

Whenever you’re anxious because you can’t think of anything to say, acknowledge your Elephant. You’ll notice the difference. He stops rampaging and gives you your brainpower back.

How to snap out of an anxious mood in a job interview

You’re at a job interview. The interviewer asks, “What makes you the right fit for the job?"

Panic.

You’ve got (1) so many responses that you (2) don’t know which to choose... What's (3) the correct answer?!

That’s what’s going on in your head. That’s your Elephant. But you ignore your Elephant and rattle off a list of the same generic skills as the interviewee before you:

I have experience managing people. I have great communication skills. I learn from my mistakes.

The interviewer is no closer to knowing if you are the right fit. Your anxiety prevented you from actually answering the question and connecting with the person, because you’re too busy pretending your Elephant doesn’t exist.

Give your Elephant a soft pet on the back. Like this:

Why am I the right fit? I have (1) so many reasons that I’m (2) not really sure where to start. What (3) do you need most from the person you hire for this role?

Good question. It’s a sales role, but we also need you to be able to talk basic tech with the developers to help improve our product. Because we don’t understand what they’re saying half the time.

Oh, I’m your man. I used to be a total nerd. I spent my teenage years building computers and taught myself basic programming when I was 13. It’s not on my CV but I know my stuff.

Now you’re less anxious because you acknowledged your Elephant, AND you gave a kick-ass answer.

How to snap out of an anxious mood on a date

This is the last example. You’re on a date. You think it’s going well.

The sexual tension rises and that thought pops into your head: Kiss?

Panic.

Does he/she want to? Is it too soon? What if they pull away? :/

That’s your Elephant. You ignore it and waffle on about how good the burgers were.

The connection fades because your Elephant is running amok. You feel like you missed the moment.

But what if you soothed your Elephant with your words?

You: I’m terrified right now, because I’m about to kiss you.

Future Lover: I don’t bite.

You have your answer, and you’re not anxious anymore.

FYI: Not quite as sexy as pausing, looking into their eyes and just going for it if they hold your gaze... but lightyears better than NOT going for it because you’re too anxious.

TL;DR

Whenever you feel that familiar panic, stop charging through it in vain hope for the best. You won’t out-muscle your Elephant. Say what’s on your mind and watch your anxiety fade.

Strength Training then Hypertrophy

Whats up Reddit! im just back in the gym after a shoulder injury playing sport had me out for 6 weeks back at my strength programme and one week in. Im 21, 6ft and 204 pounds

I heard my friend mention that the best way to build lean muscle and size is strength for a period of time then hypertrophy back to strength and repeat. Could anyone elaborate more on this?

Ive only really focused on strength training so was wondering if incorporating hypertrophy after a period of say eight weeks would be good or would six maybe even four be better.

cheers

Hung up and called the operator and they told me they hadn't patched through anyone from an outside line, so apparently scammers are now booking hotel rooms and calling from inside the hotels. EMSKR: Guides for picking out bikes/cars for repair?

Now I know very little about cars. The best I can do is change my tire. I thought about one day getting a car to restore and teach myself from the bottom up but I figured I would start by doing that with a motorcycle. Are there any guides out there (or just folks with good advice) on how I go about that? Do I look on Craigslist? How do I know which parts work and which don't and how do I go about finding parts and figuring out how to replace the broken ones? Thanks for any advice.
