What is the best way to get your strength up bench pressing? I either get stuck at a certain weight or my strength drops it's back and forth and super annoying. I've been doing 5x5 and that hasn't been helping much either.

EMSK: How to help your SO with depression.

Copy pasting comment from SchopenhauersSfro

Ok. My credentials: depressed since 12 or so (now in my 40s). Diagnosed at some point or another with: dysthymia, major depressive disorder, chronic depression, borderline personality disorder, bipolar 2. I've been hospitalized 3 times and I've been in partial hospitalization programs. I've been married, divorced (she cheated), been in numerous relationships. Ok, so that's my point of view.

Depression will try to drain you just like it tries to drain your SO. Her depression is going to try and suck the happiness out of you if you let it. Unfortunately, you're on that path right now. BUT YOU CAN CHANGE THIS. I want you to be very aware of this problem and let you know that if her depression is making your life hell, you'll need to leave her. In the long run it will hurt both of you. But I'm going to tell you how to avoid this and improve your relationship's chances.

  1. You're not her therapist, your her SO. Don't blur that line. What that means is that her treatment is between her and her therapist. She can share with you and she can ask for advice (be super aware of the difference between advice, support and a decision). But you can't cure her. Don't even start to take that responsibility on. You don't have the training or the detachment to even attempt this. You're a part of your SO's support system, a very important one.

  2. Your SO has to do the therapeutic work, not you. If she's supposed to get more exercise (she is, I bet), part of the therapy will be your SO motivating herself to do it. Offer to workout with her if you want, but don't become the driving force- you're along for company.

  3. Your SO is going to have a big part of her life that you're not going to see unless she shows it to you, which she has by talking about her past. Her depression is incredibly personal and she probably feels pretty ashamed. You're just going to have to get used to not having access to this unless she wants it.

  4. Respect her privacy. This is sort of like #3 but directed towards other people than you. You should not have shared her past experiences with us. I know, it's anonymous, but if I was in her shoes I'd be mortified that you did this, and pissed. I recommend editing your post to remove that information. Also, don't talk to anyone about her depression or therapy unless she says it's ok. If you have a best friend, ask her if she minds. Be clear on why you need to do this (you do need to and you should find a support system of your own). Consider getting a therapist for yourself for the express purpose of helping you with this relationship.

  5. There's going to be bad days. There's going to be days where you'll just want to scream the most Vile things in her face just to get a reaction because she's been a zombie for three days and won't get out of bed. This is normal. This is a natural frustration stemming out of your love for her. I mean, don't do it, but don't hate yourself for this reaction. Times like this is shy you need a support system for yourself.

  6. Medications. Oh, meds, I hate mine. There will be times when her meds will be adjusted or changed. There will be reactions as her body adjusts. This is normal. If she's acting weird, just be supportive and make sure she's safe. If this goes on for two or three weeks without getting better mention your observations to her as she may need them to be adjusted again.

  7. Meds, part 2. For the love of God, if she's upset don't ask her if she took her meds. Depressed people have other, legitimate feelings most of the time. Respect them and deal with her like you'd deal with anyone else who's mad or whatever. Asking if we've taken our meds is insulting and infuriating.

  8. Meds, part 3. She may decide to go off her meds. This happens a lot. You're in a bad place if she decides to do this: on one hand, she needs them; on the other hand, it's her body. If she decides to do this express your concern, talk to her rationally and remind her what she's like off them. Also, ask (beg?) her to consult her doctor so she can do it safely (and they can try to talk her out of it).

  9. Things can get worse. My depression has gotten worse and worse. I sometimes hallucinate now because of my bipolar when I never did before. She may get worse.

  10. Things can get better. Her therapy, meds, exercise and you could all just click and she enters into a maintenance phase of her treatment. This is where most of us get to eventually, sometimes for years.

  11. Depression is a cycle and can get triggered. She could be in maintenance and your pet dies, or she sees a homeless person or an old memory comes out. This could send her down the spiral and she'll have to fight her way back. This will happen, I can almost 100% guarantee it.

  12. Depressives are incredibly sensitive. This could be good. We usually have great insights into people and situations, we can be deeply touched by art (fucking Wagner and Chopin are so beautiful to me that I tear up just thinking of them). We can be great people to be around.

  13. Finally, you have an incredible amount of power in your relationship with her. If you wanted, you could twist her into doing anything. You could gaslight her into disbelieving her own memories. You could easily send her into hospitalization if you wanted. Fuck, you could probably get her to kill herself if you want. If you can't handle this responsibility, don't you dare take it.

Advice for working chest with suspected rotator cuff injury

Hey guys, I've been hitting the gym regularly now for probably about 6-8 months. About a month to a month and a half ago I started noticing some discomfort in my shoulder. I think this was initially caused by standing dumbbell flys or bench press. I was also a baseball pitcher from the time I was 7 until about 16 and I'm not sure if that may have predisposed my shoulder to this injury.

I've been improving and seeing results I'm happy with and don't like the idea of taking many weeks off and losing the results and strength I've gained. I was at the gym today and did incline bench, incline dumbbell press and regular bench press. I did notice that benching was probably the most painful for my shoulder, despite staying focused on pinching my shoulder blades back (something I initially hadn't been doing, which may have caused my shoulder to get sore in the first place).

So anyway, my question is simply: How can I continue to work out and still allow my shoulder to heal? The shoulder is bothersome when I'm doing certain lifts but not so bad that I can't do them. Should I simply avoid the exercises that bother my shoulder and replace them with ones that don't?

I've also noticed that in the last month, my left pec seems to be just slightly larger. To be honest, it's hard to tell if it really is or if it's due to the lighting in my bathroom. But my theory is that, if it really is a little bigger, I'm compensating by using my left side more than my right due to my right shoulder being sore. So any recommendations on exercises that are good for chest without being tough on shoulders and work both sides independently would be ideal.

Anyone have any advice for lifts like this? Or just general advice for working through an injury similar to mine?

What are your top 6 strength training exercises?

So I'm looking to start a simple routine alongside martial arts training, one that'll have me training twice a week but without overtaxing any specific muscle groups.

My question is what are your top 6 strength exercises; I'm going to pick 4 and do 2 strength exercises each workout (and throw in some light supplemental work)

Addendum: would 2 sets of 2 strength exercises twice a week be enough to gain strength? I'm very wary about over training

My left femur is 14mm shorter than the right. I'm squatting with lifting shoes and a 10mm heel lift in my left shoe. Is that okay?

I had back injuries in the past due to this and now to keep my hips and spine from tilting too much I wear heel lifts all the time. I couldn't find a comfortable left beyond 10mm, so I'm using a 10mm heel lift to compensate as much as I can.

Is that okay? Am I doing the right thing or something stupid?

Difference between hypertrophy and strength training?

I'm transitioning from hypertrophy training into more of a strength training program, and I'm wondering what happens physically to muscles when I train using lower reps and higher weights?

I understand that in hypertrophy, you use higher reps like 8-15 and you focus on time under tension. This tears muscle fibers and so in response your body builds more muscle cells, which builder bigger muscles.

Now with strength training.... I understand that your body tends to focus on improving existing muscle more than building new muscle. Obviously if I train 6-8 reps then some I will stimulate some hypertrophy, so there is a grey area.

My experience is that I acquire more intense, longer lasting DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness) from hypertrophy. I also know that your muscles use different chemical reactions depending on what you ask of them. Can someone give me some resources or more information about what happens to muscles during strength training?

EMSK - Shave in the shower for a better, cheaper shave

Rather than posting another glib promotional infographic, this tip is actually useful.

When you shower, make the shave the last part of it. Other soaps and hot water and steam all help to soften the bristle, so your actual shave is easier and blades last longer. You also remove the risk of behind-the-ear-foam ;-)

Bonus tip - instead of fancy cosmetic grooming products, shaving gel, foam in a can, etc., give Palmolive Shave Stick a try. Dirt cheap (like 50p/60¢ cheap if you look), and actually a much richer lather than most soaps and canned products, even without a shaving brush. It's impressive.

Absolute beginner program suggestions

I'm 47 years old, 5'7" and 158lbs. I'm mostly skinny but what would be called skinny fat. I've read that the best way to overcome being skinny fat is to do strength training. I do and have done cardio, on and off, but it does nothing for my belly fat.

My apartment building has a fairly nice gym. Nothing too fancy though. Treadmills, other cardio machines, one of those things with the pulleys and ropes on it, some weight machines, some dumb bells and heavy balls.

I've messed around with the machines but can't get past the feeling that I have no idea what I'm doing, if it is helping, or if I'm even doing it right. What I need is a plan for a very new newbie that includes what I should be doing, number reps, weight amount, etc., a schedule of some sort, and examples for how to do the exercises, with videos if possible. I don't know I may be asking for a lot. I'm not averse to paying for this information if necessary but I'd expect it to be very polished if I did. I guess it would also be good if it had some sort of goal that I could achieve so that I know I need to go to the next level.

Also, I live alone and probably wouldn't have anyone to help so it would be best if it didn't require any assistance.

One more thing, if this is the wrong place for this request, I'm sorry, please point me to the correct subreddit.

I Gained 20 Pounds in One Month? Is That Weird?

Hey yall. I'm a 5'4 sophomore Asian male. I recently started lifting 3 times a week beginning in January ( New year new me bullshit) and by the end of January and on to the beginning of February, I had gained 20 pounds. Before I was pretty underweight just weighing 106 pounds but now I jumped up all the way to 124(wavers a bit) pounds to be a bit less underweight. (I did body workouts, a section a day) I'm a pretty skinny fellow but I'm pretty active, doing sports like cross country and volleyball. I also drank 20g (protein) protein shakes every time i worked out. Knowing this information, is my weight gain extremely weird or just a bit odd or even normal?

Pros and Cons to the Mixed Grip v.s. Overhand Grip?

I have been doing overhand grip for years now because of doing Olympic style weightlifting however the rubber weights the colleges I am currently attending crack and break when you put them down from like a clean and jerk or snatch. In addition they only have really thick barbells which are not the best when you have tiny hands like mine. I no longer have a coach to train with for Olympic style so the overhand grip is not absolutely necessary. I tried Mixed Grip the other day, alternating every set and it seemed easier than overhand, possible grip strength???

Looking for a new training regime

Hey guys/gals. I'm looking for a strength regime, specifically to increase my deadlift, squat, and bench. Ideally, the program would be 5-6 days a week and approx. 1-1.5 hrs a day. I have considered the StrongLifts 5x5, but only working out 3 days a week was killing me. On top of that, the program seemed a little more "beginner" than where I am currently at. My deadlift/squat/bench 1RM is 315/245/155 lb. if that matters. Anyone have any advice?

General advice?

Hey everyone! (English not native, sorry)

Body "specs": 66kilos, 178 cm high.

Currently training 3-4 times per week.

As you guys see im kinda small/skinny and want too put on some muscles.

My current eating program: bearkfest: 2 slices of bread. (meat or cheese on it) lunch: 2 eggs and 2 slices of bread. Second lunch: Same as lunch (eggs) or cheese etc. Dinner: Some meat w either potatoes rice etc. Late night dinner: 2 eggs and 2 slices of bread.

After training im also eating bananas and restitution drinks. (training 2 hours after dinner)

Now when it comes too training ive been doing it for roughly 3 months.

What ive done: Hangups(can do 13), Benchpress(65kilos max), Militarypress(50kilos 2 reps), Front squats(70kilos), deadlift(100kilos), Pushups(around 30), biceps curl 1 and 2 handed(2 handed 40kilos 2 reps).

I have not tried a specific program. Been doing like 4x4, 3x8 in diff exercises. Ive been trying too do muscle failure atleast once a week per muscle group. (good or bad?)

So my question too you fellows are:

Should i start on a program and wich is a good program for a skinny guy. (i do not want too bulk if i dont need too. And im trying too eat as healthy as possible while gaining muscles.)

Am I eating enough or do i still need too push in even more? (currently pushing in what i feel my body can handle at this point. I have allready seen results as off the last 3 months!!! :) )

Sorry for a messy post and bad english. If this post doesnt fit here im truelly sorry and mods can remove at any time!

Thank you for your time! :)!!

Starting a recomping program and have some questions

Hello. I am planning on starting a recomping program but am not sure about a few things as I'm just reading online to piece all of this together. So my plan is to do heavy lifting 3/week and then have at least 2 cardio days. I understand that I will eat at deficient on the cardio days and eat more on lifting days. I've got the breakdown on calories, protein, fat, carbs. My main question is on lifting days am I suppose to avoid cardio completely? Some background-I'm a 34 year old female, 5'8", 145. I've been doing a lot of body weight workouts and cardio 5-6 days a week for 4 months. My goal is to build muscle and to look and feel stronger and leaner. Thanks!!

Advise on routine composition and duration needed

Some six weeks ago I got myself a gym membership and started working out consistently. I've worked out before, though always at home with bodyweight mainly. My main goal is bodybuilding, with some muscles, i.e. delts, lats, glutes and lower arms, being more important than others. I'm running a upper/lower body split. The problem: each training unit takes too long. Upper split can take up to two hours, while lower is somewhere around 1 to 1.5 hours. I'd like to have each training to take up around one hour. In the following I'll outline my splits. While the main reason for this post is to reduce training duration, I'll gladly take any advice on exercises included, etc.

I'm training every second day, always doing 3 sets with ca. 8 repetitions for each exercise. Usually 1 min pause inbetween sets. Sometimes 1.5 mins.

Don't know the units on the LF machines (can't imagine it to be kg), so I'm going to write "u" for units.

Before each workout I do a "tabata" routine (4 mins). Cycling ergometer on lower body days and rowing one on upper split days. Ca. 3 mins of the same cardio before to warm up and after to cool down.

Exercises not necessarily in that order, apart from the first two, which I always do first.

Lower split:

  • Squats (barbell on the back, free weights, 17.5kg each side)
  • Deadlifts (I guess romanian DL, 15kg each side)
  • Hip thrusts (on a hamstring machine, 65u)
  • Quadruple back extension (on a smith machine, 5kg each side)
  • Glute ham raise (with a push-up at the bottom, yet)
  • Glute kickback machine (doesn't feel like it's working my glutes, probably gonna drop it, 55u)
  • Hip abduction machine (slightly standing up and holding myself on the top part of the machine, 100u)
  • Leg press (dropping it in favor of squats, 82.5u)
  • Back extension machine (dropping in favor of deadlifts, 65u)
  • Leg raises

Upper split:

  • Pull ups (after initial 4-5 with the "assisting platform" set on 12.5u)
  • Dips
  • Shoulder press machine (25u)
  • Shoulder lateral raise machine (27.5u)
  • Chest/Bench pres machine (37.5u)
  • Rowing machine (both hands simultaneously, 50u)
  • Butterfly machine front (37.5u)
  • Butterfly machine back (45.5u)
  • Tricep pulldown (17.5u)
  • Bicep curl machine (thinking of dropping it in favor of chin ups, 37u)
  • Forearm curl (putting my arms on my legs while sitting, dumbells, 12kg each side)

The angle of lifting weights

Hello all. I'm certain that the answer to my question is widely available, however I don't seem to be able to ask my question precisely enough. The matter which has been bugging me recently is whether anything and if so what changes with the angle of lifting weights. I mean the change like between the basic crunches and crunches while hanging with your head down. More precisely, the difference between flexing the muscle from vertical to horizontal position - like in crunches with your head down - and from horizontal to vertical position - like in basic crunches. What I'd like to know is whether it is maybe harder for the muscle to flex in either of the positions, are different muscles engaged and so on and so forth. But I'd like to point out that the crunches are just an example I used, it's a more theoretical question, but maybe the answer changes depending on the muscle? For example if I were to do basic bicep curls and such which would start in a horizontal position? I tried my best to depict what I mean in MS Paint, so feel free to take a look: http://ift.tt/2l1m3Xo As you can see I didn't devote much time to it, but hopefully it will be of some help :) Thanks in advance for all help, I appreciate it :)

The tagalongs were literally the same as those chocolate wafer cookies by Little Debbies. They were probably half the quantity for 5 dollars. So I'm estimating 2.5 times the price of shitty cookies.

This isn't the first time I got hit by this viral ad stuff but I think it's probably the last time. I had a lot of disappointments before this also. Watch next time someone say girl scout cookies are good and I chime in saying they suck. I'm going to be downvoted to hell. Happens every time I have done it to a product I tried due to viral ads.

What do hammer bicep curls workout besides the biceps and why are they less effective than bicep preacher curls?

I switched from bicep priest curls to bicep hammer curls due to discomfort on the inside of my left forearm. With the hammer bicep curls, I don't feel any discomfort on the inside of my left forearm but the bicep hammer curls seems to work out the biceps much less effectively than the bicep preacher curls. Why is that? I'm assuming the bicep hammer curls are less effective on the biceps because they workout out other muscles besides the biceps.

EMSK simple ways to make people relax around you [x-post from /r/socialskills]

Isn’t it awesome when you really connect with people? But for a connection to form, people should be able to relax around you. Leaving satisfied and positive after a conversation.

So how do you make people comfortable? When you yourself feel shy or anxious. You can achieve this by applying a few tactics. Even if you feel terrible about your social skills, you can learn this.

It feels great to make people comfortable around you. To become a bit more charming. So you have fun and connect with ease.

But I get it. It is scary. You fear to look like a fool and be laughed at. So let’s get to terms with some truths. So it will be easier.

You thinking ‘you make people uncomfortable’, causes part of your shyness. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead of staying in this negative feedback loop, start acting like you are not anxious. Because: “It's easier to act your way into a new way of thinking, than think your way into a new way of acting.” (Jerry Sternin)

So how do charming people act? How do they put others at ease? Well someone like that is smiling, joking, listening. Showing interest and warmth. Someone that shows an affectionate interest in YOU!

You can do that as well!

Say you start a conversation with someone. Start by focusing on the other. Imagine they are also very anxious. Maybe they are stuck with negative thoughts as well. Be the best person you can be. Shift your attention to them. Make them feel welcome and interesting.

You will notice that as you shift your focus to someone else, you will forget your own anxiety. Result: You are more at ease. They are more at ease.

So how do you focus on other people?

Start with a smile. Be the first one to smile. Open up and give a nice smirk as welcome. It feels good when someone accepts you with an easy grin. Minimal effort, maximal effect. Maybe it feels a bit weird at first. But you’ll get used to having an affectionate smile.

As you talk to people, use their name. It feels good to hear your own name. You actually get a small dopamine kick when you do. So share the dope! Mention people’s name naturally throughout a conversation.

Third, people feel comfortable when listened to. Ask questions, show interest and listen intently. If you catch yourself falling back into your thoughts. Catch yourself and refocus on what is said. It helps to paraphrase what people said. This forces you to listen. And shows people you are interested.

On top of that, ask questions about what is said. Best questions ask for more emotional depth. So ask WHY people do things. Or HOW things made them feel.

But, even with all your new found social fluency. Sometimes, things just get awkward. Instead of ignoring it, state the awkwardness. For example, you try to fist bump and someone else high fives? Fusing in this awkward fist grab. Just say: “Wow, we fucked up” and laugh it off. Acting like nothing happened makes it weird. Addressing the tension will release it. Giving you both a laugh.

Don’t be afraid to show some vulnerability. Be true and say what you really think or feel. Pussyfooting around issues creates an emotional barrier. Most people can’t put their fingers on it, but they will feel you are holding off.

So say what you think. Share how you feel. Being radically honest is a fresh breath of air. Sharing true feelings and thoughts connects you to others.

But most importantly, don’t take it all too serious. Not the conversation, not yourself and not other people. Make crappy jokes, enjoy yourself, laugh about ridiculous things. No matter what situation, everything can be put in perspective with some dry witty remarks. Nobody likes stuck up assholes. So let your fucks fly and enjoy yourself.

Tldr: When you feel anxious, but still want to make people comfortable. Focus on making them feel at ease. Instead of focusing on yourself.

Smile, use names, listen intently, paraphrase what’s said, ask for emotions, address awkwardness, show vulnerability and don’t take it too seriously.

You will relax by refocusing. People appreciate the effort and enjoy your cool attitude! Good luck! If this helps you and are interested to learn more about social skills and confidence. Check this out.

5/3/1 and avoiding bench due to a pulled muscle

I've been doing 5/3/1 for about 5 months now and I'm really happy with it. In December, I had to take ~5 weeks off due to really bad bronchitis. I ended up pulling a muscle in the side of my chest from coughing (and maybe bruised a rib?) during that time.

I still can't bench without severe pain in that area, but the other 5/3/1 movements don't both me at all. Until it's fully healed, would it be better to double-train strict press, or to just train strict press once a week and skip bench day? I'm currently doubling up strict press (Tuesday and Friday), but wasn't sure if there's some downside to it that I haven't thought of.

Also if I am double-training that movement, is it safe to take larger jumps than 5lbs?

Thanks in advance!

EMSK: What NOT To Do During Salary Negotiations

I actually had this discussion with the head of HR at a company where I worked. She told me the biggest mistake a person can make is to not negotiate at all and that it happens way too frequently. It goes like this:

“Hi, this Mary Smith from ABC Corp. Thank you for interviewing with us. We are happy to offer you the position of xyz for n dollars per year.”

“Thanks, when do I start?”

Accepting the first thing the company offers, even if it is excellent, is a sign of desperation and lack of experience and acumen and puts the company’s decision to hire such a noob in doubt.

The best response is to say, “I am thrilled with the offer. I really am excited about the company and the offer. May I take a day to think it over?” To which Mary Smith is going to say, “Please, take all the time you need. Perhaps we can speak again on —- .”

And then hang up the phone, make a fist pump, think over the offer and then consider what MORE that you want. Even if they are giving you more than you ever dreamed you would get, they are holding something back and they EXPECT you to ask for more. If you don’t they lose respect for you.

So at a minimum ask for a little more money, even if it’s a token amount. ALWAYS ask for another week’s vacation. You can ask for a good parking spot; an office instead of a cubicle; the right to work from home one day a week; a cell phone or a company car — absolutely ANYTHING is on the table. Ask for it. Make a list. Pick the things that will make you most happy. Then when you call them back you say, “Well, Mary Smith, I have thought about your generous offer to work at xyz and I am excited to get going as soon as possible, however, my feelings are that the salary needs to be n + y and because of the extra responsibilities I am going to need xyz.”

I know what you are thinking: you’re embarrassed to ask for more. Get over it. They expect you to ask for more. Develop a cold, hard heart and ask. They aren’t going to say, “You ungrateful bastard! We change our minds! Get lost!” They will either counter with some of what you want or, if they are playing hardball, refuse anything you ask for. Then you must decide whether you want to proceed. A successful negotiation is one where both parties feel good at its conclusion. If you walk away feeling somehow cheated or duped or used it’s not going to help your motivation and it’s not the way to start a new company. If you screw them to the wall so hard that they feel you were being unreasonable then you better be ready to walk on water the day you start because they will be expecting miracles from someone who demanded so much.

And don’t forget — you don’t need to explain WHY you want what you want. That’s just whining. Never get into the “why”. Just get into the “what” of demands. Why you want it is no business of theirs.

I once was offered a job at a company where the pay was so far beyond what I was making at the time that my heart was pounding like a trip hammer. Nevertheless I asked for 5000 more dollars per year. My manager said, “We’re already at the top of the pay scale and I can’t give you any more money but I am prepared to offer more stock options and an extra week of vacation.” I took the job. The extra week of vacation was awesome and with the 5000 extra shares of stock (reduced in the purchase of the company in a 6 - 1 reverse split) ended up being worth over 150,000 dollars. Yay.

And whatever you negotiate — make certain it’s in the offer letter. Do nothing on a handshake or the “word” of someone. If it’s not written down, it never happened. You got played. It happens all the time. Write it down, get them to sign it, store it some place safe.

For anyone who's interested, feel free to check out more [here](XGenMag.co)!

What are the best headphone types for lifting.

Sorry if this is off topic.

What style of headphones are the best for lifting, not what brand but what style.

I find that lifting goes so much better if I have music to block out background noise and keep me motivated ( I like chip step )

I had a pair of "sport" wireless headphones that also have a built in MP3 player. Even though they didn't stay 100% in my ear, they never fell and were simple and I didn't have to mess around with anything.

Well the left ear broke on them so I'm trying for replacements. I tried some earbuds, they kind with the rubber piece that sticks in your ear. That was just awful, they kept falling out during squats and were more distracting than helping so I went back to my old ones with only one working ear.

I have some cheap ear muff style headphones that I might try but I'm worried about them falling off.

What style is the best to block out external noise, that stay in place, and don't get in the way?

I'm thinking about ordering some earmuffs with the built in MP3 player.

EMSK: How to base your opinions on reliable data

When researching a topic and gathering data to inform positions, all articles and websites are not created equal. Complete objectivity is a myth and more unnecessary than we make it out to be, but you need to make sure your source knows how to collect and interpret data. The media at large is notoriously awful at this.

Here are some very basic things to keep in mind:

  • "Your resources need to be recent enough for your topic."

  • "Does the information come from an author or organization that has authority to speak on your topic? Has the information been PEER-REVIEWED? [emphasis mine]... Do they cite their credentials? Be sure there is sufficient documentation to help you determine whether the publication is reliable." (Your local library should provide web access to a scholarly article database. These will usually have a box you can check to limit your search to "peer-reviewed articles," which basically means other professionals in the field look over it and that it's much less likely to be the musings of some disconnected nutjob)

  • "Biased sources can be helpful in creating and developing an argument, but make sure you find sources to help you understand the other side as well. Extremely biased sources will often misrepresent information"

  • "Check when the page was last updated - Dates when pages were last updated are valuable clues to its currency and accuracy."

  • Sentences starting with something like "Well, I heard..." are often indicators of what research literature refers to as "anecdotal evidence." This is considered almost useless in scientific research (the exception being in forming an initial hypothesis). The fact that someone's great aunt smoked and drank soda every day of her life and lived past 100 does not prove that these will lead to long-life. A study has statistical power only when it has a large sample size, meaning the more people were studied, the more applicable the data. This is precisely what anecdotal accounts do not have.

  • Finally, firm conclusions cannot be drawn on the basis of a single study. If this is a topic with some history, there should be variations and replications of said study. If it's cutting-edge, and no one else has had time to publish further research, just remember to take the conclusions with a grain of salt.

Currently in our culture, people tend to make up their minds on a topic based on emotion, then look for proof-texts. This is not working for us. Please practice some basic responsibility in checking your sources. Failure to do so has very profound negative consequences. You can still come to whatever conclusion you like, just please try to base your opinions in some semblance of reality.

Read this article for further tips on how to check your sources: http://ift.tt/2jFrfh2

Newbie to Weights- Some Questions

Hey guys, hoping this is the correct place to ask these questions. Basically I currently do only body weight exercises like chest dips and pushups but I really would like to transition to some sort of weight. I want to train at home, so I'm planning on investing in some equipment

The main thing I think(yet don't know for sure) I'd like to get first would be a simple weight bench (would this be good? http://ift.tt/2k15xrg) and also some dumbbells that I can adjust the weight on. Thing is, I have no idea which dumbbells to get. I'm thinking some Olympic plates, as well as some bars to hold them, yet I have no clue which to get, or how much weight.

In summary

-What are some good Olympic dumbbell plates, and bars to go with them? -How much weight should I be looking to get as someone completely new to weights(I am in fairly decent shape and do a calisthenic based workout daily) -Hoping not to break the bank with these purchases, but my budget is not totally limited. Thanks in advance to any replies!

EMSK: The 1 Thing About Life You've Forgotten

Your life consists of daily, seemingly trivial actions and choices. Although, those tiny commitments are not likely to make a huge impact, sometimes you face the situations that require major decisions that are going to leave a trace and determine the trajectory of your life.

Needless to say, that not all your decisions will be right. Some of them will be a perfect fit for the person you would like to be and things you would love to accomplish. Meanwhile, some of them will prove to be wrong or even destructive.

The harsh truth you need to embrace is that some of the things you will decide to commit to will do nothing but hold you back. They will never allow you to be satisfied. You will never feel happy about them.

No doubt, there will be things that bother you and make you feel depressed. They will make you regret your past decisions and be willing to have the second chance and correct all the mistakes.

The feeling of dissatisfaction is going to follow you as long as you stay committed to the choice that has appeared to be wrong.

The bad news is that you cannot make the right decisions all the time. The good news is that you do not need to. Because we are all people — we are not perfect. And you are not an exclusion.

Regrettably, there is no “magic bullet” or 1–2–3 solution to always making right decisions. The thing you need to learn is that mistakes are an integral part of your life. Your job, relationship, education, business… these are spheres where you are required to make huge commitments. And sometimes they are not likely to work out.

However, you do not need to live with your mistakes forever. You do not need to force yourself to settle for something you do not like. You do not need to make yourself bury the dreams about your ideal life.

BECAUSE THE THING ABOUT LIFE YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN IS THAT YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE.

Even if you are sure that there is no an alternative and you indeed have to accept the complexity and unpleasantness of your current situation, there is still a choice. You have to acknowledge this and look for it more carefully.

As soon as you realize that your decision to commit to a certain thing was a big mistake that does not let you enjoy your life to the fullest, you need to start a journey in search of a better decision.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE HOW THINGS ARE, CHANGE IT! YOU’RE NOT A TREE — JIM ROHN

You are not a tree. You can leave and find a better place, where you feel happy to live; a better workplace, where you can uncover your talents; a better partner, that will love and treat you well.

However, the more you procrastinate to change the things, the more difficult will it be to change them. The longer you’re keen on postponing, the more accustomed you become to the life you do not like.

Because every change requires a sacrifice. In most cases, you need to give up something you already have and start from scratch. The decision to change the things you do not like is about sacrificing your comfort, energy and time.

No one says it is easy. Nonetheless, the result is worth the struggle.

Use the choice you have. Use your chance to live a happy life. Be the one who takes that opportunity. Be the one who changes your life for better.

Do not settle for the things that bother you and make you feel depressed. Do not settle for the life you do not like, knowing there is a chance to fix it. Do not give up chasing your dreams. Design your ideal life and do your best to start living it now.

Shoot for the best and never settle for less. Because you deserve more.
